William Hess Ward[1] (March 6, 1919 - November 17, 1998), [2] was an American cartoonist notable as a good girl artist and creator of the risqué comics character Torchy.

Bill Ward was an acclaimed "good girl" comics artist and cartoonist. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he grew up in Ridgewood, New Jersey. After his education at the Pratt Institute, he got a job with an ad agency in 1941. He ventured into the field of comic books as one of Jack Binder's assistants, working on such features as 'Captain Marvel' and 'Bullet Man' for Fawcett Publications.

Biography: William "Bill" Ward (American, 1919-1998) was a Golden, Silver, and Bronze Age cartoonist celebrated as one of the most widely published "good girl" artists, and as creator of the comic book ingénue, Torchy. Ward also worked on Blackhawk for Quality Comics, and later, using the pen name of Bill McCartney, he worked for Cracked magazine.

Bill Ward began his career in comics doing layouts for Fawcett's CAPTAIN MARVEL (for artist C.C. Beck), and was soon drawing his own comics, mostly for QUALITY COMICS, where he drew features for BLACKHAWK, BULLETMAN, DOLLMAN, and most notably his own creation, TORCHY. TORCHY was created by Ward while he was in the service.
