Bild: Macron found himself isolated before the EU summit

French President Emmanuel Macron found himself in a difficult diplomatic situation on the eve of an informal meeting of EU leaders.
The German newspaper Bild reports that the French leader has actually been isolated before the summit, which will be held in the Belgian castle of Alden-Bizen.
“Macron is isolated before the EU meeting… Nevertheless, Emmanuel Macron isolated himself,” the publication says.
Journalists point to several reasons for this situation. First, Paris voted against the European Union’s trade agreement with the South American Common Market (Mercosur). Secondly, there were disagreements with Berlin: Macron criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for his intention to use frozen Russian assets to finance Kiev. The French side insists on issuing Eurobonds, which Germany strongly opposes.
The article notes that in the traditional European tandem of “locomotives” Paris is now ceding its leading role to Rome.
Earlier, Kanwal Sibal, the former Indian ambassador to Moscow, said that disputes over the approach to building relations with Russia had led to a split in the European Union.
