Bikini Season Hair Removal

Bikini Season Hair Removal

With summer coming up, I’m sure plenty of you are going swimsuit shopping for your trips to sunny destinations! If not, I’m sure you will still find this useful for when you go swimming during the summertime.

I realize this is probably a taboo topic. However, I think this is a good way for me to discuss hair removal methods for women and teens who are just getting started on hair removal in the bikini zone. Hair removal down there is COMPLETELY optional. Some girls find it awkward to ask their parents or peers about this, so I decided to blog about it.

There are quite a few ways to remove hair there. If you see my blog post called Ten Ways to Remove Body Hair, you’ll realize that most of these methods can be used to remove hair before rocking that swimsuit.

Let me discuss the pros and cons of using temporary hair removing methods in the bikini zone:

1) Shaving

Shaving works for some people, but on others it can promote ghastly ingrown hairs as well as scarring from ingrown hairs. Shaving causes the hair regrowth to be thicker because the hair is bluntly cut off at the surface of the skin. This can be an issue if you feel that your hair in the bikini zone is already too thick. It seems that shaving works best for people who don’t have a lot of hair down there to begin with.

Additionally, hair regrowth is faster if you use a razor for hair removal. It can also be an itchy process.

2) Depilatory Cream

Depilatory creams remove hair by dissolving them with chemicals. See my Nair post for more info. I can’t see depilatory creams working well if your hair is too long, so you should probably trim it before you try to use Nair there. Only apply it to areas with hair. Follow the instructions on the bottle and don’t rub the lotion in.

Like shaving, hair regrowth is faster since you are not removing hair from the root. Those with very thick hair may not find depilatory creams effective at all. Additionally, depilatory creams can cause allergic reactions or unpleasant chemical burns on some people.

3) Waxing

Waxing pulls out hair from the root. When the hair grows back, it will be thinner than it was before. Years and years of waxing will cause less hair growth overall in the region. Like shaving, waxing can also cause ingrown hairs/ingrown hair scarring when the hair starts to grow again. Your skin may be more sensitive to the aftereffects of waxing than it is to shaving. Everyone is different.

There are two main types of waxing styles: the bikini wax and the brazilian wax.

  • Bikini wax: the only hairs that are waxed off are the ones that are seen on your skin while you are wearing bikini bottoms. It is pretty basic.
  • Brazilian wax: ALL of the hair is waxed off including the hair in between buttocks (YES, you have hair there!). If you don’t want to go completely bare, you can request a small strip of hair called a “landing strip” to remain.

I wouldn’t recommend waxing your bikini zone by yourself if you’ve never waxed yourself before. Go to a hygienic salon that has good reviews… or even better, go to a salon SPECIFICALLY for Brazilian waxing. They do bikini waxes, too. Just make sure that your esthetician wears gloves and does not double dip the stick into the wax pot. She should use a new stick every time she applies wax on you.

Since the hair in that region tends to be coarse, you might end up getting ingrown hairs. Some people are lucky enough to not get any ingrown hairs at all.

Also, some women report having trouble aiming urine after getting a Brazilian wax because pubes apparently help aim the urine into a straight line. Not having hair to help guide the urine causes a “sprinkler effect” for some people. This is probably why you walk into a women’s restroom and sometimes see pee all over the toilet, ground, and walls. The “sprinkler effect” doesn’t happen to ALL women obviously, but it isn’t abnormal if that happens to you.

Whenever you get a bikini or a Brazilian wax, salons often request that you remove everything from the waist down in the waxing room. Sometimes you’ll be given a paper thong or some other disposable underwear. Don’t be shy about being naked, though. Women who wax the bikini area see people’s private parts all day, so yours won’t be shocking to them. If you want, you can request the same person every time so that you get to know one person instead of having the entire staff wax you.

It is normal to have tender and red skin a few hours after a wax. If anything looks like an infection, go get it checked out!
