You can say byeee to ingrowns forever.
Quick question: Is there anything worse than those annoying bumps and ingrowns that appear on your bikini line after you shave?? I'm going to go ahead and answer that for you and say NOPE—they're the worst. But guess what? If shaving is your thing (and it happens to be mine), that redness and irritation can be stopped. I hit up Lillian Tung and Laura Schubert , the founders of Fur (a trendy hair removal brand), for the best shaving tips to save your bikini line from hell. You're welcome.
WTF do the words "bikini line" mean anyways? Well, it was originally meant to describe the hair and skin that was visible around a bikini bottom, but now most people consider the “bikini line”to be, like, the whole thing. In 2020, any skin that grows pubic hair is your bikini line folks.
Nope, not if hair removal is your thing. It's especially not bad if you don't have the pain tolerance for waxing or the bank account for laser hair removal. You just have to make sure that you’re doing it correctly (more on that later).
The tools you use (AKA the razor ) will make a huge difference in whether or not you’re left with angry bumps or smooth-ass skin. Most importantly, your razor needs to be clean (otherwise you risk irritation, or even worse, infection). Give it a quick rinse before you shave to make sure it’s not clogged up with dead skin or hair.
Also essential: you also want a razor with a very, very sharp blade. A dull one will drag against your skin and lead to ingrowns and razor burn (so annoying). Bonus points if you use with one with four or five blades, like the options below.
Lillian and Laura both agree that e xfoliating before you shave is key (ideally, with a gentle physical scrub like the ones below). Exfoliating buffs away any gunk or dead cells that may be laying on the surface of your skin, so when you shave, your razor isn’t pushing debris, oil, and dead skin further into your pores, which can cause ingrowns .
Umm, 100 percent. Putting a razor against your skin without a buffer is basically a recipe for disaster (and irritation). So, yes! You should always use a shaving cream . A creamy body wash works in a pinch too.
The direction definitely matters. Your public hair is thicker than the hair on the rest of your body, and your public skin is ultra-delicate, so you want to shave in the same direction as your pubic hair naturally grows to avoid any bumps and redness. Be sure to shave using short, small strokes (not long sweeps) and if your pubes are super long, give them a quick trim with scissors before using your razor.
You want to use a product that’s hydrating and soothing after you shave your bikini line. A post-shave lotion or oil helps to keep your skin soft long after you shave.
If you're over your body hair and want to shave your bikini line, go for it! Just remember to exfoliate beforehand, use a sharp, clean razor, don't shave against the grain, and moisturize after. The result will be hairless, smooth-as-hell skin.
