'It was a big blessing': Houston teen overcomes 16 surgeries to win prized baseball scholarship
July 6, 2020Updated: July 7, 2020 8:35Β a.m.
After enduring 16 surgeries, this Dobie High School star athlete, Gabriel Rojas, has emerged strong to recently clinch a prized baseball scholarship at Letourneau University in Longview for Fall 2020.
It was a freak accident that could have sent any young boy's life into tailspin, but instead it became a defining test of strength and courage for Gabriel "Gabe" Rojas.Β When Rojas was only 11 years old in 2014, he was struck by an out-of-control car and pinned under the car for several minutes.
"I was playing basketball in my driveway with my teammates," Rojas said.Β "My friend was shooting, and I didn't see the car coming. All I remember was blacking out.Β I was pinned under his car.Β It felt like a dream. It didn't feel real."
After enduring 16 surgeries, this Dobie High School athlete has emerged strong to clinch a prized baseball scholarship at Letourneau University in Longview for fall 2020.
"I knew I was going to play sports again.Β That just motivated me more," he said.Β "It was in my blood. If somebody told me I couldn't do something, that motivated me."
A former Little League powerhouse, Rojas never stopped practicing and believing he would play baseball again after the accident.Β His mom and dad, David and Raquel Rojas, could see their son's determination early on. Rojas has loved baseball since he was 4 years old and has championship rings to prove it.
"It's his love for baseball," David Rojas said. "He understands the game at a level that other kids don't. He loves the sport.Β He always competed at the highest level. We're all very blessed. Before the accident, every team wanted him. After the accident, nobody wanted him. It was demotivating.Β But somehow the doors just opened. I just felt that his determination of never giving up is what got him where he is today."
Rojas said that his faith, family and friends helped him get through the series of surgeries.
"I would just look at this as another bump in the road." Rojas said. "I knew God had a plan. I knew he would put me back on the baseball field.Β It was a big blessing. One of my dreams is to play college ball."
Rojas' family credits the care of one doctor with Memorial Hermann and McGovern Medical School at UT Health, Dr. Lindsay Crawford, for helping him in the initial critical surgery. Rojas' family was told that he may lose his leg due to the accident, but Crawford stayed through the night to help save his leg.
"I went down into the emergency room. There was a potential that he may lose his leg," Crawford said. "I operated on him in the middle of the night. The main goal was making sure everything was cleaned out, stabilizing the fracture. He had an extensive injury to the front of his leg."
What impressed Crawford was Rojas' strength through it all.
"Gabe is super resilient. His parents are very involved and supportive," Crawford said. "This is a traumatic thing to go through."
Rojas' dad said that his son's resilience comes from staying positive.
"We proud of him. He feels like this is just the beginning," Rojas' dad said. "He was injured, but he never gave up.Β He doesn't dwell on it. Baseball has always been his dream."
"My favorite Astros' player is Alex Bregman," Rojas said. "We have the same attitude."
