Steam Giant Heading East: Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 to Visit Michigan This July

CHEYENNE, WY — The ground is about to shake in the Great Lakes State. Union Pacific has officially confirmed that the legendary Big Boy No. 4014, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, will travel through Michigan in July 2026.

The visit is a headlining stop on the locomotive's historic "Coast-to-Coast Tour," a year-long trek celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. This marks a monumental milestone for rail fans, as it is the first time the Big Boy has ever ventured this far into the Eastern United States since its restoration.

A Monument of Industrial Might

The Big Boy is a marvel of 1940s engineering. Designed to haul heavy freight over the Wasatch Mountains during World War II, these "4-8-8-4" articulated locomotives were built to be the most powerful steam engines ever to grace the rails.

"For the first time, we will share the Big Boy with communities on the East Coast, operating it from ocean to ocean," said Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena. "It is a powerful symbol of America’s industrial might and innovation."

The Michigan Leg: What to Expect

While the exact whistle-stop times are being finalized by the Union Pacific Steam Team, the "Eastern Leg" of the tour is scheduled to sweep through the Midwest and Great Lakes region throughout the month of July.

  • Public Displays: Michigan is expected to host at least one major public display day, allowing families to get up close to the 1.1 million-pound machine.
  • The "America250" Consist: The Big Boy won't be alone. It will be accompanied by the specially painted No. 1776 – America250 diesel locomotive and a fleet of vintage UP Heritage passenger cars.

  • Whistle-Stops: Fans along the mainline can expect brief 15-to-30-minute "whistle-stops" in various towns as the engine takes on water and undergoes routine maintenance.

Big Boy by the Numbers

To understand the scale of what is coming to Michigan, consider the sheer physics of No. 4014:

How to See It

Union Pacific urges all "train chasers" to maintain a safe distance. The Big Boy is wider than standard locomotives, and enthusiasts are reminded to stay at least 25 feet back from the tracks at all times. Standing on or near the tracks is not only dangerous but is considered trespassing.
