With the passion for education, I decided to open an English Club with the goal of creating a great learning environment for local kids and adults at my home town, Dong Nai province. We are building the herb farm and the English club for children in the village. About the herb farm, we don't use chemical, everything is from natural, organic. And we need your help to build it up and share with all the farm that doesn't use chemical anymore. About the English club for children, we believe children are the future. Children desire to learn new things. At present, we're teaching them to protect the environment, collect garbage around the village after school time. They're so happy about that. Constructive … read more Criticisms: - Please consider cleaning the house, bathroom, floors, and kitchen before a new guest comes - Consider having no more than 2 guests at a time as your volunteer room has only 2 beds in it. If you want to have 3 or even 4 volunteers make sure there is a clean room and bed ready before your guests arrive. A lot of my discomfort was arriving at a new place and not being able to relax and unpack. Consider making the kitchen look nice for your guests. Positives: - Speaking with Emily and doing a video call before arrival was easy and uncomplicated. She was honest about the room not being luxury, and living standards not being super high. Emily helped organize the bus to come pick me up. I loved teaching them so much. I was going to stay in this room until the other volunteer left. She seemed absolutely kind and deeply concerned when she heard about my uncomfortable experience. She gave me soap. She apologized, and I felt a true loving kindness from her. She promptly helped me get a ride back into Saigon with no negative behaviors or negative emotions. She remained calm and even sad. I felt sad and compassionate toward her. I could tell she was troubled by what had happened. Negatives: - I arrived to a house that was so filthy and dirty. Flies and bugs covered the kitchen. The bathroom was a disaster with soap, dirt, and hair all over the place. It appeared as if no one had cleaned in weeks or months. The children's rooms were trashed, and garbage covered the floors in the house. When I arrived I offered to clean the house, and I did. When I arrived I was shown a bed that wasn't made, the sheets were a tangled mess, and the room had clutter everywhere. I was so confused by the mess. Never has anyone shown me such a messy room before on arrival. I cleaned the room with determination and a kind inner mood. Then as I was napping in the bed I was woken up by a guy who seemed agitated, he said I was sleeping in his bed and he told me to leave his room. It was very uncomfortable. He pointed me to the volunteer's room. It had 2 beds only. I was now the 3rd volunteer. I was now more than a little worried about where I would be sleeping that night. I felt anxious and uneasy about the situation. For me, it's a big challenge. Anyone can go in and take your stuff. The other volunteers who have been there for a while didn't have any problems with it. They also felt safe with their belongings not being locked up. This would be such an awesome Workaway with some basic cleanliness. I was feeling too uncomfortable to ask for a fan. For some reason, I didn't feel relaxed enough to ask. I was hot all night sweating. Really not the host's fault. It turns out there was a fan available. I should have asked for it. I was feeling uncomfortable because of the last interactions of the day. Thuy's family: her 3 children and her 2 brothers are very friendly, they were not shy to communicate with us even though none of them really spoke English. They were very helpful and caring! The community in the village: As many people before us wrote, the community is like a big family, everyone knows everyone and they help each other. They always waved and smiled at us when we passed by, and sometimes gave us treats. We felt our help is really needed here, so we felt useful. Negative experiences: - Communication in advance There were changes going on around the place, some of which affected our privacy and security, and these changes sometimes were not properly communicated to us in advance. These situations caused some problems between us, so we always had to make an extra effort to investigate what was going on. After a little more discussion it was always OK, but it could have been avoided with proper communication in advance. Our yard was the first place in the village, so anyone could have sneaked in and taken our things. We had a heavy street door that made a loud noise when moved, we usually kept it closed but we felt it was not helping. As for privacy, very often random people would come in to do something in the garden, whether we were there or not, and usually they'd leave the gate open. In the end, nothing happened, we were not robbed, so it was mainly just a worry. They didn't care much about privacy and often came into the garden and took our things or disturbed us when we were resting. Also, we felt it was impossible to give them English lessons because the age difference was too great: they were between 5 and 13 years old. We tried to play with them, which was too childish and simple for the older ones, but when we tried to teach them something, the little ones were completely lost. They are also difficult to control together, so we ended up shouting and fighting a lot. Often the water and electricity would be cut off, so we couldn't shower or wash our clothes right after a dirty job or a hot, sweaty day. There was a lot of change going on, they were building a house, so there was always a big mess everywhere. We were able to borrow an electric bike for a weekend so we could explore a bit, but we spent most of our free time chilling and doing our hobbies at our stay. After 2 weeks we really liked the place and the atmosphere. We would encourage everyone to visit this place. This place is obviously changing all the time, so we're sure you won't experience the same conditions we did. We had a video call to talk about the volunteering position, discussed tasks and agreed on a date. Teaching them English was really easy and fun as they are very passionate to learn and participate in your classes, and some parents make sure to keep an eye on the class to see if everything's going well. An unexpected but wonderful surprise for me, I stayed there for 3 days but from the very first second I felt at home as everyone immediately treats you like you belong there. The kids are super smart and adorable and very attentive and the rest of the family is very welcoming and attentive of you. They take care of you like you're part of the family. I cannot sufficiently communicate how impactful this experience was for me in regard to the entire scope of my relationship with life. The host Thuy is one of the loveliest, most sincere, most caring people I have ever met and I now see her closer in terms to a sister than a host. She is also an amazing mother and a woman of extreme patience and fortitude. The kids are all super cute and a lot of fun to play with, and all have very unique personalities that you will quickly fall in love with. For my personal experience there were no formal classes for teaching English, though I know that they have done that in the past and plan to again. Most of the 'work' therefore included hanging out playing games with the kids and helping them practice and learn English in a more natural way. It also included helping Thuy with whatever she wanted to get done on a given day, which included some cleaning, weeding in the garden, and helping her make soap which she is extremely gifted at. Since I speak some Vietnamese I also offered to do some English translation work on a soap making manual that she had written. In short, the work is dynamic, but first and foremost make sure that you like or can at least put up with kids as they clearly love having the volunteers around and will be dying to spend lots of time getting to know you. In terms of any further cautions, like I said earlier this is an extremely authentic experience. This means having to cope with certain minor simplifications in the amenities that one may normally be accustomed to, but if you're looking at this listing to begin with then you should already likely have a mindset that is open to trying new things and experiencing different cultures and ways of living. In summary, this is a lifechanging and unforgettable experience that I would not trade for anything in the world. I love this family so much and will without a doubt be back. Be in good physical shape - The farm work can get physically taxing especially in this hot, tropical climate. Thuy is extremely lenient with breaks and will assign lighter tasks for you if you are struggling with the more physically demanding ones. So long as you're putting in genuine effort with whatever task you do, then it shouldn't be a problem. Nevertheless, reconsider signing up with this Workaway if you are not able bodied or have any reservations with the prospect of doing physically demanding work. We also had freedom to develop our our projects to contribute to the farm. At night, we would teach English to the kids of the neighbor. There were usually five kids, among them, Thuy's children were there. The have a good English level and they are motivated and happy to learn English. They love singing. They are basic level, so it was very easy for me, who never teach before and as english is not my mother tongue. They feel confident and learned fast. We were the first workaways so at the beginning the classes were a bit unorganised, but by the end of the week it had developed into a nice group of 15 local kids turning up at the house. Although the level was quite low the students were all fun to work with. Because the kids are a range of ages it might be easier for a workaway with some teaching experience. The house isn't in the center of town and the place isn't very accessible so don't expect the commodities of a big city. However, the local area seemed to fill most of our needs and there is a small high street with a few coffee shops and restaurants. One thing to note is that we slept on a straw mat on the floor. This wasn't a problem for us but I can imagine it would be for some people. Saying that, I'm sure Emily would be happy to arrange something softer if you let her know in advance.
