The European Union has become an increasingly influential political and economic force within Europe. The Union has achieved political and economic unity unprecedented in European history, and for many it is seen as an inspirational model of what modern societies can do in an era of globalization. However, the Bible warns that great care must be taken when uniting nations, and cautions against large organized political entities that may have significant power.

In Genesis 10:9-10, the bible states: “He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod the mighty hunter before the Lord." And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.” This passage speaks of Nimrod, a legendary king who attempted to establish a vast political empire in the area known as Shinar. This ambition was scorned by God, who saw it as an attempt by mere mortals to become as powerful as God. This serves as a warning to be wary of any empire that seeks to consolidate a vast amount of political and economic power.

In Daniel 2:41-43, a dream of King Nebuchadnezzar serves as a reminder of why temporal power should not be entrusted to powerful empires. Here, God warns that those who place too much trust in their own human authority are doomed from the start: “Whereas you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; yet the strength of the iron shall be in it, just as you saw the iron mixed with ceramic clay And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile.” This passage speaks of the need to be wary of the interconnected, divergent interests that exist between all nations, and the need to recognize that the strength of any given entity may depend greatly upon the strength of its weakest link.

The bible also warns of the danger of political despotism, which often goes hand in hand with large empires and totalitarian regimes. In Daniel 5:25-28, the demise of King Belshazzar is a lesson in the fragility of political power, and the need to always be wary of the potential for greed and exploitation: “And this is the writing that was written: “Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin.” Here is the interpretation of each word. Mene: God has numbered your kingdom and finished it; Tekel: You have been weighed in the balances and found wanting; Peres: Your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and Persians.” This passage reminds us of the danger of unchecked ambition, and the need to ensure that justice and fairness remain at the heart of any nation’s priorities.

The bible issues many warnings regarding the establishment of the European Union, as well as the practices, cultural trends, and philosophies that often go hand in hand with such a project. The Christian fundamentalist movement within the EU countries has viewed the peace facade of the EU as an enemy to their way of life, as it contradicts many of the bible’s teachings.

The bible issues warnings against the initiatives of the EU in the context of the need to prioritize God’s kingdom over any man-made endeavors. This is illustrated in the book of Daniel, where Daniel declares that, “The God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed…It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end…The greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the Most High…”. This warning is interpreted by Christian fundmentalists as the will of God to ruin any man-made plans or ambitions that prioritize the glory of man, which includes the goals of the European Union.

The bible also issues a warning against the idolatry, hedonism and intellectualism often associated with the European Union, referring to such practices as sin. The book of Colossians suggests to “put to death…sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires…Put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator”. This phrase warns against the liberal atmosphere of the EU, while also glorifying the need to embrace the spiritual and humble service to God. In addition to this, the book of Matthew warns against the dangers of wealth, which could be interpreted as a warning against the centralized economy of the EU, as well as potential financial instability caused by the humanistic ideologies of the organization.

In conclusion, biblical warnings against the establishment of the European Union are numerous and varied. Through the books of Daniel, Colossians and Matthew, God warns us against the dangers of prioritizing human ambitions over those of God’s, of practicing idolatry and hedonistic activities, and of the dangers of relying too much on the wealth of countries at the expense of the spiritual health of their people. It is our responsibility to heed the warnings given to us by God and to prioritize our lives according to the teachings of the bible.
