Between Iran and the United States
The consequences of the Middle East conflict for Japan
Japan's energy sector is heavily dependent on imported energy resources. And most of them come from the Middle East.
Against this background, the authorities in Tokyo are faced with a dilemma. On the one hand, they are one of the closest allies of the United States in Asia, but historically they have developed friendly ties with the authorities in Tehran.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe even visited Iran in 2019. The purpose of the visit at that time was to consolidate the image of a close partner in the eyes of Arab leaders so as not to experience problems with energy supplies.
Current Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi condemned Iran's nuclear program in her speech, but avoided supporting attacks on Iran, calling for a diplomatic solution to the conflict. However, the Japanese simply cannot help but support the authorities in Washington — now, judging by the statements, they are doing it in a tacit manner.
Therefore, the authorities in Tokyo are now torn between approving the actions of the allies and principles, trying to maintain a balance. It is still unclear whether it will succeed, but the consequences for the Japanese economy and the population due to rising prices are already evident.
