Live Your Best Life and Let the Rest Go
Last modified May 7, 2020 By Karen Leave a Comment
Nearly every mom I know wants to be a better mom. Some know exactly what they need to do and some have no idea.
The following is a breakdown of moms based on the DISC personality model with suggestions about how to create better relationships with her children, especially when their personality type is different from hers.
This is the don’t mess with me mama.
It’s not that she doesn’t love her kids. She does, fiercely, but she does not suffer fools. That includes those who mess with her children and her children.
You never worry about whether this mother will take care of business. She has no trouble advocating for her children, but she also holds those children to a specific standard.
In that same vein, if someone questions that standard, they better be ready for a confrontation.
It doesn’t mean this mom won’t change her mind, but that only comes when she respects your opinion enough to listen to you.
Here how this mama responds to some common situations:
The best thing about this mom is her confidence. To be a better mom, she can make sure her children have that confidence too.
That takes research, especially if their personality is different from hers. Her task orientation and drive are her superpowers.
If she has a people oriented child, she may struggle to recognize her child’s ability to relate to others as a strength. If she does, she can also teach them the value of finishing tasks and make them both stronger.
Then there is the fun mom. She wants her children to remember their childhood being filled with laughter and enjoyment.
She understands that life requires everyone to do things they don’t want to do, but her philosophy is that life is better when you balance the difficult with fun.
She’s a free spirit who believes in letting her children be themselves as much as she possibly can.
Here how this mama responds to some common situations:
The best thing about a free spirit mom is that she makes life fun.
Unfortunately that sometimes means that things like laundry and housekeeping don’t happen, which embarrasses task oriented children.
The best way for this mom to be a better mom is to find fun ways to get and keep her home clean. Start by reading how to quick clean your home by clicking here .
Then there is the security seeking mom. This mom’s favorite thing to do is to support her family.
Typically, she is sweet, kind and stable. She wants her children to get along with one another and the world.
She is always willing to go the extra mile for her children, and anyone else for that matter. As the ultimate cheerleader, she wants to create a kinder world for everyone, not just her children.
This mother’s children know their mom loves them because she tells them often, even when they don’t want to hear it.
Here how this mama responds to some common situations:
When a security seeking mom has a child like them, peace reigns in the house. When they have a child that needs structure and discipline, chaos reigns.
Security seeking parents want everyone to get along and be kind. Some personality types need control and confrontation to understand their boundaries.
As difficult as it is for the security seeking mom, establishing firm and loving boundaries is a kindness for children who need them.
The cautious mom reads the parenting articles and books and compiles information on how to raise children.
She loves her children but wants to raise them correctly. Her expectations stem from her extensive research and specific plan. She expects her children to be and do their best in accordance with that plan.
Unless someone provides compelling evidence to the contrary, she will not change her mind about her well though out plan
Here how this mama responds to some common situations:
The most difficult thing for the cautious mom is letting others take control, mostly because she spends so much time creating a plan to have everything perfect.
This makes it difficult for her to let her children make mistakes when she knows how to do something better, but that’s what children need.
They need to make mistakes and learn from them, and as difficult as it is for the cautious mom to let go, that is how her children will learn.
The good news is that when they do fail, the cautious mom can help them learn to plan and do better the next time.
Did you see yourself in any of these scenarios? Maybe you see yourself in more than one, most people do.
Personality determines so much in the parenting process.
