Including a couple of spins on missionary.
We’re always hearing that we could be having better sex , a better orgasm, or a better relationship . But how often do we hear the nitty-gritty of how we can actually better understand our deepest desires and most embarrassing questions? Bustle has enlisted Vanessa Marin, a licensed sex psychotherapist based in San Francisco, to help us out with the details. No gender, sexual orientation, or question is off limits, and all questions remain anonymous. Now, onto our topic: the best sex positions for beginners.
Q: My boyfriend and I recently lost our virginity to each other. We’re still figuring out how it all works, but it’s gradually getting less awkward and more fun! We’ve only been doing missionary , but I’d like to try some new positions. I have some ideas of what we can try, but I’m not sure exactly how to get into certain positions and how to move in a way that will be fun for me. Any tips for a beginner that will be fun for both of us?
A: Absolutely! Starting to explore the wonderful world of sex positions is a lot of fun, especially when you’ve got a good partner by your side. Here are my recommendations for the five best sex positions for beginners:
How to do it: When you’re in missionary position , lie with your feet off the bed and pull your knees into your chest. You can do this during or before penetration. As your partner pushes in and out of you, let your hips rock back and forth. For them, the movement is pretty similar to regular missionary.
Variations to try: This basic sex position, modified, is a great example of the power of small changes. Even moving your legs closer to or further from your chest by a few inches will create a different angle of penetration. You can also pull your legs further apart or squeeze them closer together. Or keep one foot flat on the bed and the other leg lifted into the air. If you’re limber, you can also try resting both of your ankles on his shoulders.
How to do it: Before you start having sex, place a pillow under your hips, then let your partner enter you like during regular missionary . This is a super easy variation on an already basic sex position that can create mind-blowing results. It helps their body push against your clitoris, which may help you reach orgasm . You can have them focus more on grinding against you instead of thrusting in and out.
Variations to try: You can invest in sex furniture like the Liberator , which is specially designed for this position. Its sloped surface helps you experiment with raising your body further up off the bed.
How to do it: Go to the edge of the bed and let your legs hang off, and have your partner place their body between your legs and enter you. You’re pretty much along for the ride with this one, and the person on top gets to thrust away to their heart’s content! This is an easy sex position for people with penises because it doesn’t require them to hold up their body weight with their arms.
Variations to try: If your bed isn’t the correct height for your bodies to line up, you can try putting a pillow under your hips — or you can have them kneel on the floor between your legs, then hold each of your thighs in their arms for more leverage and intensity. You can also move your legs closer or further apart from each other, or rest your ankles on their shoulders for extremely deep and powerful penetration.
How to do it: Have your partner lie on their back. Crawl on top of them, resting one leg on either side of their body. Slowly lower yourself down onto them. This position can be an intense one to begin with if you’re not very wet, so you may want to start with an easier one or use some additional lubricant .
Variations to try: Try playing around with a number of different ways of moving your hips. You can grind in a slow circle. You can push your hips toward and away from their chest. You can move your hips up and down on them. You can also try changing the angle of your body by leaning forward or back while touching your clitoris. If you’re not sure how to move, ask your partner to hold on to your hips and show you what they like.
How to do it: Have your partner sit in a chair . You want to find one that’s short, sturdy, and doesn’t have wheels. It’s also preferable to use something that doesn’t have armrests, since those can get in the way. Slowly lower yourself onto them like you did with the On Top position (again, you may want to start with a more basic sex position first or use lube). Both of your feet will be on the ground, which will give you lots of leverage. You can also hold on to the back of the chair or to his shoulders for additional support. You can easily move up and down, or you can grind your hips in a seductive circle or in a figure-eight pattern.
Variations to try: You do this position on a sofa or on the bed against a headboard; your partner’s still sitting up, but you’re on your knees. You also can try kneeling on the chair if there’s enough space, or turn around and lower yourself onto them backwards, which will create an entirely new angle of penetration.
When you’re new to sex, it can be awkward in the moment not only to try to think of what you want to do next, but also to figure out how to get into that position. In addition to trying these sex positions for beginners, I’d recommend that you and your partner look at pictures of additional sex positions together while you’re outside of the bedroom. Looking at pictures and talking through logistics together will make it a lot easier to try new things once you’re naked!
You don’t have to get too acrobatic during sex. Sometimes even the smallest adjustment to an easy sex position can create an entirely different angle of penetration. Try pulling your legs further apart or squeezing them closer together. Try moving one leg but keeping the other still. Try tilting your pelvis up or back. Any of these minor shifts can lead to new sensations.
In TV and the movies, characters always roll around into new and complicated positions without ever speaking to each other. While this does happen naturally every once in a while, you should expect that you and your partner will have to speak to each other when you want to veer away from the basic sex positions. There’s nothing wrong with using your words! You don’t have to give a speech; something as simple as, “I want to get on top” or “let me pull my legs up” will do the trick.
Keep in mind that there’s no “right” or “wrong” way to move. Just keep experimenting with each other and having fun!

It can seem like a bit of a learning curve when you're having sex with someone new. First, there's the sense of the unknown and the lack of experience with this person — but it's also the fact that what works with one partner doesn't always translate into another.
"We all come with our own sexual history and we can draw from previous experiences, but no two people are the same," sexologist Dr. Megan Stubbs , tells Bustle.
If you're having sex with someone new for the first time, it can make a huge difference if you touch base about sex and your preferences with a quick conversation first. " Assess your expectations and align them with your partner," Dr. Michael Reitano, MD, physician in residence at sexual health startup Roman , tells Bustle. " Talking about sex doesn't have to be a dry conversation about logistics. The truth is the preparation for sex allows the participants to begin to imagine what is to come and build positive sexual tension all while stressful details are shed."
Once you have a sense of each other, the sex itself serves as a time to experiment, negotiate, and feel each other out. If you're feeling anxious, pick great sex positions where you feel comfortable and supported — that don't involve anything too fancy. Here's what you can try.
How To Do It: Lay on your stomach, using your arms to prop you up slightly as your partner enters you from behind. You can use a pillow under your hips if that feels easier — or start in doggy and lower yourself down from there.
Why It Helps: It's intense and intimate, but it doesn't have that eye-contact feel if you're not ready for that yet. It's a great position to get comfortable in and stay in for a while.
How To Do It: With your partner sitting up, straddle them and slowly lower yourself down — focus on grinding or bouncing, whatever feels best.
Why It Helps: If you love just straight cowgirl, go for it — but this variation, with your partner leaning against the wall and drawing their knees up to help draw you closer, is a bit of a gentler option.
How To Do It: Lay on your side, with your partner behind you — your hips should be slightly higher than theirs. As you lift one leg, they should enter you from behind. This can also be done with a strap on. It can feel a little awkward at first, so try a few different angles — and maybe some lube.
Why It Helps: Another intense and intimate position, this one does require a lot of legwork. It's one that most partners will be able to get into quite easily, so you can focus on the sensation.
How To Do It: While your partner sits in a chair, straddle them and lower yourself down. If you're feeling more adventurous, you can try it facing away from them.
Why It Helps: It's a position that brings you close together, but also one that is easy to get into and stay into — so you don't have to deal with a lot of fumbling around.
How To Do It: In this variation, traditional doggy gets a twist — you can position yourself at the edge of a couch and brace yourself over the arm.
Why It Helps: If you want to get a little more wild, this position edges you toward doggy, but still gives you a little more control if you're worried doggy with a new partner will be too intense.
How To Do It: In traditional missionary, lift your knees up higher and hike them around your partner's hips.
Why It Helps: This simple twist on missionary will help give you more pelvic alignment and clitoral stimluation — a great way to enjoy yourself with a new partner.
How To Do It: Take the traditional 69 position and make it far more comfortable (and sustainable), by switching to both of you laying on your side.
Why It Helps: Sticking to oral sex with a new partner is a good way to learn how they like to be stimulated — and this variation will allow you both to be comfortable so you can really focus on the task at hand.
Sex with a new partner might make you feel nervous — and that's totally common. Stick with positions in your comfort zone and, most importantly, keep the communication flowing.

If you are new to sex, it's normal to want to engage in different sex positions with your partner so that you both can experience maximum pleasure and improve the sexual experience. Also, you may find things a bit awkward or less straightforward than you hoped they would be.
It's alright. Sex can be a bit overwhelming since there's technically no way to practice before doing it. As a woman, your first time is your first time. And guess what? For a couple of more sexual trials after your first time, you'll still be in the beginner's phase, where the whole show may still seem a bit awkward.
However, you don’t need to worry. Many people didn’t become a pro the first time. That’s why it’s a good idea to stick to more convenient, yet satisfying , easy sex positions you can easily pull off with your partner.
That said, this article has got you covered with more than a few sexual positions you and your man can explore together as beginners. In no time you’ll be a pro.
Perhaps, the missionary style is one of the most famous sex positions for beginners. It’s also a true classic and is the most practiced in the world. While some very sexually adventurous people have tagged it a boring sex position, it remains one of the easiest positions to get into, especially for first-timers or beginners that haven't had any sexual experience.
As a lady that just started having sex, it's normal to feel shy or shame, about being naked with someone else for the first time. Therefore, the missionary style allows your partner to take the lead on top while you enjoy all the amazing things he's doing to your body. It's not physically demanding for the lady, letting you lie down and enjoy the ride. In case you need some help, the missionary is pretty straightforward .
You, the receiving partner, relax on your back while your partner lies on top by giving him enough space between your legs to penetrate you. If you still feel a little shame, you can put off the light.
Some extremely conservative people consider this position something that was adopted from the animal kingdom. Well, to be fair, we are technically animals. That said, the doggy is a hot, sexual position that allows you and your man to experiment with deeper penetration. It's an intense position as it allows the man to thrust deeper with greater force while he's behind you.
What's more, you and your partner have more freedom to use your hands. As a woman, it gives you access to freely play with your clit, i.e., if you are open to some self-clitoral stimulation while your man pounds away.
The doggy position is highly recommended by sex therapists as it has many modified versions to change things or spice up the sex life of couples. It can be done while you and your partner are both standing, on your knees, and even lying down with pillow support to raise your hips in the air.
Don't you just feel safe and loved when your man lies behind you with his arm around you and even caresses you? Yeah, it's a sweet feeling. Now imagine your man penetrating from the back while you both lie on your sides in that cuddle position. It's another very romantic and comfortable position especially for you, the lady.
You are lying there, feeling those strong arms grip your waist while he thrust you just as you want. What's more, if your man knows how to multitask, it gives him easy access to use his tongue on your neck, ears, and shoulders as the penetration continues interrupted. I recommend the spooning position for beginners because it is comfortable for both parties and especially for the lady.
There's no harm in trying , but if it's your very first day, the reverse cowgirl might be too much. However, if you are becoming more confident /comfortable with both your man and the sexual activity, cowgirl is an enjoyable sexual position that you and your partner should try as beginners.
Unlike the missionary position that puts your man in charge and control, you are the one that dictates the pace of the action. You determine the depth you want it inside you, and also how fast you want the penetration. This great position will stimulate your G-spot and is of course, super comfortable.
It's a win-win with the cowgirl as your partner likes the way you ride him. The position also makes your partner's hands, free to do all sorts of things to your body, fr
