Whether you’re a sex toy novice or a seasoned player, finding the best sex toys to suit your needs can be a trial-and-error situation. Everyone’s different when it comes to intimacy, and one person’s holy grail vibrator can be so-so to another. Not to mention how many different kinds of vibrators, dildos, and other sex toys there are out there in the first place. “It can feel overwhelming to face the sheer volume of options available when it comes to buying a sex toy for the first time,” says Dr. Kate Balestrieri , a licensed psychologist, certified sex therapist, and founder of the group therapy practice Modern Intimacy

That’s why we consulted with sex and intimacy experts (as well as conducted our own research) to find the best sex toys that will help you actually reach climax — whether you’re exploring your own body or trying something new with your partner. While our list includes dildos, clitoral stimulators, G-spot toys, vibrators, and more, the Lelo Smart Wand 2 landed the top spot on our list for its versatility.

From the best budget picks to dual-stimulation vibrators, plus helpful tips for sex toy care— keep reading for the best sex toys.

What We Love: It’s a full-body vibe, so you can use it to both de-stress and pleasure yourself.
What We Don’t Love: It’s kind of clunky which makes it difficult to store.

A top favorite of Dr. Balestrieri’s, Lelo’s Smart Wand 2 is a full-body vibrator that’s meant to rival the classic Hitachi wand. It features 10 different massage patterns and an extra-long lasting charge so you can depend on it not running out of power whether you’re in the mood for pleasure or need to soothe a sore neck and shoulders. At $200, it’s a serious investment, but considering it has a 10-year warranty and doubles as a muscle relaxer, the price is worth it in our eyes. We do wish it was a bit smaller for easy storage (at almost 12 inches long, it won’t fit in every drawer). Regardless, the versatility of this vibe isn’t comparable to other options — so if you’re looking to discover new ways to pleasure yourself, it doesn’t get better than this.

Type: Vibrator | Speeds: 10 speeds and vibrating patterns | Use: Solo or with a partner

What We Love: It’s a very versatile sex toy.
What We Don’t Love: While it’s great for beginners, some people say they outgrow it quickly.

For less than $25, you get a lot of bang for your buck with the Lovehoney 6” Curved Dildo, a favorite of Rachel Worthington, a sex and relationships writer and sex toy reviewer for Bedbible.com , who says it’s a great choice for sex toy beginners. “The design is simple, and not too realistic to be off-putting,” she says. “It also has a nicely curved shaft and a bulbous tip that makes it easier to hit your g-spot on the front wall of your vagina.” It comes with a lot of versatility too: Beyond hitting your G-spot easily, it can be used with a bullet vibe to transform it into a vibrator — or use it with a harness so your partner can get in on the fun, too.

Type: Dildo | Speeds: N/A | Use: Solo or partner play

What We Love: The tech-forward vibrator can help you know your orgasms better.
What We Don’t Love: It lasts up to two hours on a single battery charge, which may not be long enough for some users.

Horny data nerds, this one’s for you. Rica Cruz, PhD , a Philippines-based sex and relationships therapist, educator, broadcaster, and CEO of Unprude , describes the Lioness as a “smart rabbit-type vibrator that can measure your arousal and orgasms.” That’s because this women-designed vibrator uses built-in sensors, biofeedback, and an app to analyze and track your orgasms so you can understand them better. Before play, you sync the app to the toy, and you’ll be able to see a visual chart of your orgasms, as well as track how different factors (such as alcohol, caffeine, stress, etc.) affect them. Here’s to better understanding what works for your body and improving your personal sex through data-backed pleasure.

Type: Vibrator | Speeds: Unlimited/Customizable | Use: Solo

What We Love: The controlled-via-app vibrator is fun for long-distance couples.
What We Don’t Love: Some users say it can get pretty loud.

Another favorite of Dr. Balestrieri, the Nora connects to mobile devices using Bluetooth, so the vibrator can be controlled via app, which is great for partner play — even if they’re in another city. The silicone rabbit-style vibe features a rotating head for easy g-spot stimulation, as well as a vibrating arm that ranges from low to “earthquake”-level patterns. A single charge can also last up to four hours of continuous use, which is significantly more than some of the other vibrators on this list.

Price at time of publish: $99 (originally $199)

Type: Vibrator | Speeds: 3 rotation speeds (more via app) and 7 vibrating patterns | Use: Solo and couples

What We Love: It has intense, rumbly vibrations for being a small, bullet vibe.
What We Don’t Love: People who prefer soft, squishy silicone may think it’s too hard.

Small but mighty is the name of the game when it comes to the Tango X. Worthington even says it’s her personal favorite vibrator. “It’s not the cheapest, but it’s the most incredible and versatile vibrator I know of,” she says. “It pumps out super, super rumbly vibrations that can be used all over the body (externally), and is an absolute miracle for clitoral stimulation. The silicone handle makes it easy to hold, and the ABS plastic body is perfect for both firm and light pressure, as well as precise and broad stimulation.” For those who are just venturing into the world of self-pleasure, this is a great place to start — not just because of the vast settings, but also because the compact size (it measures up to your standard lipstick tube) makes it super discreet.

Type: Vibrator | Speeds: 7 vibration modes and 8 intensity levels | Use: Solo or partner play

What We Love: It has dual motors that can be controlled separately via app.
What We Don’t Love: It isn’t the most quiet vibrator, so it will be riskier to wear in a public place.

The Dolce (formerly known as Quake) is another Dr. Balestrieri pick. The smart, double vibrator can be connected to any Bluetooth-enabled device so you can program up to 10 custom settings. Contrary to basic vibrators, it is very flexible, so the g-spot and clitoris or P-spot can be stimulated at the same time for double-penetration play, and it’s completely waterproof, so you can experiment in the shower or bath without worry. No matter how you use it, you’ll be reaching the big O in no time.

Price at time of publish: $119 (originally $229)

Type: Vibrator | Speeds: 5 speeds, 4 built-in patterns, unlimited patterns via app | Use: Solo or partner play

What We Love: It’s great for travel.
What We Don’t Love: People who prefer super strong vibrations might not find it powerful enough.

If you’re looking for a bullet vibe for direct clitoral stimulation, the Mia 2 is a great choice. It’s waterproof, has a sleek and discreet design (it looks similar to a popular, now-discontinued mascara), and has a travel lock, making it a great vibe to pack whether you’re going on a weekend trip or a flight overseas. While it has six speeds and five different vibrational patterns, those who prefer an intense, rumbly vibrator might find that the Mia 2 isn’t strong enough. But for quick pleasure sessions when you’re in a pinch, this can’t be beat.

Type: Vibrator | Speeds: 6 speeds, 5 pulse patterns | Use: Solo or partner

What We Love: It has a discreet noise level, which is great if you have roommates or just hate noisy vibrators.
What We Don’t Love: Because of the design, it’s not great for partner play .

Solo players, this is your holy grail vibrator. For those who want something that will give clitoral stimulation without direct contact, an air-suction toy like the Womanizer is a fantastic choice. The unique Pleasure Air Technology creates a sensation similar to cunnilingus, but more concentrated and powerful — so you’re more likely to reach orgasm. With more than 10 intensity levels (that are still quiet compared to other vibrators), you’ll be able to experiment with soft or powerful speeds until you find the one for you. It’s also waterproof, available in a variety of colors, and comes with two different sizes of stimulator heads.

Type: Vibrator | Speeds: 14 intensity levels | Use: Solo play

What We Love: It has a “squeeze remote” to increase intensity hands-free.
What We Don’t Love: It’s not as strong as handheld vibes (though that’s normal for couples vibrators), so keep that in mind.

During partner sex, it’s important for both parties to feel satisfied, and nothing is better than simultaneously reaching climax. While it’s not always possible, this triple-stimulation toy can get you and your partner one step closer. The We-Vibe Chorus can be worn during sex to stimulate the clit, G-spot, and penis all at the same time. Plus, it uses a “squeeze remote” so you can change the intensity — hands-free — with more pressure. Use this on unforgettable nights, quickies, and everything in between.

Type: Vibrator | Speeds: 10 preset patterns + create your own | Use: Couples

What We Love: It stimulates the clit at the same time as penetrative sex.
What We Don’t Love: It lacks a variety of speeds and patterns.

On nights you want to spice things up, let the sexual tension build before you even enter the bedroom by wearing this out with your partner. It stays in place wherever you are, and can be used during penetrative sex, too. Completely waterproof, the device allows you to extend your escapades to the shower or bath, too. The one downside is if you’re someone who likes a variety of intensity patterns, you might find this vibrator lacking in that department.

Type: Vibrator | Speeds: 3 speeds | Use: Couples

What We Love: Some people claim to squirt for the first time ever when using the Njoy.
What We Don’t Love: There are no clear instructions for how to use it.

The shiny, stainless steel look of the Njoy might be intimidating for first-time users, but the outcome outweighs any initial hesitance, according to fans of this popular sex toy. It features a curved wand and double-ended heads to satisfy both the G-spot and P-spot — so much in fact, that some reviewers say that it helped them squirt for the first time ever. That said, figuring out how to use it can be confusing, as it doesn’t come with any instructions or tips.

Type: Dildo | Speeds: N/A | Use: Solo or partner play

What We Love: You can use it both internally and externally.
What We Don’t Love: Some say the settings aren’t strong enough.

This style of vibrator is a classic for a reason — it can stimulate hard-to-reach areas both internally and externally for a personalized pleasure experience. If it’s G-spot stimulation you crave, this definitely should be on your radar. The waterproof vibe boasts a variety of patterns and intensity levels that can be enjoyed alone or with a partner thanks to its flexible silicone material. One thing to note: Some people say that the settings aren’t strong enough, so if you prefer intense stimulation you may want to pick something else.

Type: Vibrator | Speeds: 5 patterns, 5 intensities | Use: Solo or partner pla y

What We Love: The palm-sized design allows for easy and direct stimulation.
What We Don’t Love: It has a proprietary charger, so you won’t easily be able to find a substitute if you lose it.

Worthington suggests the Mimi Soft for pregnant people, because the vibrations are gentler, but not weak, which is perfect for longer buildups and foreplay. “The soft tip provides a bit of squish, allowing you to experiment with pressure and intensity,” she points out. “It’s also very simple to use, so your partner can easily get the hang of it — great if you can’t quite reach yourself!” Make sure not to lose the charger — as it’s not interchangeable with other chords and is not sold separately.

Type: Vibrator | Speeds: 5 speeds, 6 patterns | Use: Solo or partner play

If you’re wondering about the difference between sex toys that are controlled via app or remote, Tyomi Morgan , an International Pleasure Coach, and Certified Sexologist, says that app-controlled toys can be activated from anywhere, which is great for long-distance lovers, whereas remote-controlled sex toys are controlled by a remote that is paired to the device. “These types of toys do have their limits when it comes to distance,” says Morgan. “The wearer of the device has to be within a certain amount of feet in order for the remote to send its signals to the device. Both of these types of toys are great for couples who want to play with orgasm denial or forced orgasm, which are forms of kinky play. These toys are also great for exhibitionists who want to take their play into public spaces while still maintaining a level of discretion.” One of our favorite app-controlled toys is the Lovense Nora

Dr. Cruz says that everyone is unique and has their own distinct preferences when it comes to what they want from a toy. “In terms of speed for a vibrator, I think it would help if you choose a toy with multiple vibration settings or pulse patterns just so you’re free to adjust it to however you like it,” she says. Many have at least three settings but some, like The Lioness Vibrator 2.0 , come with infinite customizable speeds and vibrations.

As with every other feature for sex toys, Dr. Balestrieri says there is no right or wrong shape when it comes to vibrators. It’s really about the desired sensation. For example, she says that if you want a more diffused sensation around the clitoris or vulva, you might want a vibrator that has a longer wand with a fuller head (like our best overall pick, Lelo Smart Wand 2 ). Another thing to keep in mind? Dr. Cruz says that some people might think they need a big sex toy to hit the G-spot, but that’s not necessarily true. “The G-spot can actually be found just two to three inches into the vaginal canal,” she says. “So you don’t need those big, long, scary toys just to feel more pleasure. You just need to know which spot to hit.” We Vibe Chorus is a less-intimidating G-spot stimulator.

According to Morgan, finding the right sex toy can be determined by the type of stimulation desired, budget, and your ultimate goal for enhancing your sexual experience. “Knowing whether you like vibration, suction, or penetration are major keys to determining the type of toy one will purchase,” explains Morgan. “Some great qualities to look for in a sex toy are its simplicity of use, its size, its quality of materials, its travel capability and ease in cleaning/storage.” She also says to “choose a toy that is made from high grade, body safe materials that provides the desired level and style of stimulation within your budget, and you'll be in good company.”

Worthington says that it’s impossible to give one set of care instructions for all toys, since they are so varied. “First off, you should check the care instructions for your specific sex toy — they should tell you what to do and what not to do,” she explains. However, as a general rule, she says that waterproof dildos, vibrators, and anal toys can be cleaned with water and a mild, unscented soap. “Just lather them up, making sure to get into all the corners and crevices, then rinse off and leave to air dry. Alternatively, you can spritz them with a toy cleaning spray, leaving it on for the specified length of time before lathering and rinsing,” she says.

When it comes to toys made from porous materials, like masturbation sleeves made from TPE, they can be cleaned in a similar manner, though some may suggest that you avoid using soap. “In that case, turn the sleeve inside out and rinse very thoroughly with water, before leaving to dry on a clean towel,” she says. But the biggest way to take good care of your sex toys is by storing them correctly, she says. “Many come with their own satin-y storage pouches to protect them from dust and dirt, but you can also buy them cheaply from places like Lovehoney. Keep them away from heat and light, and don’t store sex toys together as they could damage each other.” Another tip? Be mindful of what kind of lube you’re using. “Silicone lubes shouldn’t be used with silicone sex toys, as it will damage the surface of the silicone, leaving it gummy, sticky and unhygienic,” says Worthington.
