When Matt Blum began photographing women nude, he didn’t intend to start a movement. He just wanted to make good photography. But over the last ten years, Matt and his wife Kat Kessler have built something that has become both an artistic, captivating collection of photography and a project making bold statements about body-positivity and self-love.
The Nu Project is an online archive of nude photos of ordinary women around the world. The entire project is volunteer based: women invite the photographer into their home for the shoot, and agree to have the photos included on the project’s online gallery free of charge. Viewing the images is free and the online galleries reach 2.8 million visitors a year, half of the traffic coming from audiences outside the states. In 2013, the Nu Project published a book collection of their favorite images over the past seven years (available on Amazon).
What’s most remarkable about the Nu Project photos are their powerful depiction of the ordinary. None of the women photographed are professional models, and the photo “set” is often their unkempt apartment, complete with unmade beds, sprawled magazines, and dirty dishes still sitting in the sink. Women happily pose baring their cellulite, their tan lines, their belly creases as they laugh. Women pose washing dishes, reading magazines, watering the plants, cuddling their lover, or playing with their toddler.
And through these simple depictions, the project makes viewers reconsider what deserves to be captured in a photo, what deserves to be displayed and proudly shared for the world to see, even if just at home . Doing so, it has created an empowering resource for woman seeking proof that what constitutes a “beautiful body” is far more diverse than media suggests .
To make the photos geographically diverse, photographer Matt Blum and editor Katy Kessler have traveled all throughout South America and Europe coordinating shoots with local women to include on the website. According to Matt Blum, the photographer behind the project, women volunteer for a variety of a reasons: anything from a history of body issues, to simple curiosity of trying something new. The only commonality between all participants is that they have the openness and trust to welcome Matt into their home to do his art.
“We never had any governing principles that have stayed consistent, other than the fact that we wouldn’t exclude anyone.”
Many other artists have begun using the internet to combat negative and inaccurate depictions of the female body and begin confronting the insecurities it creates with projects like We Women and The Body Is Not An Apology , or Let Me Love Me, a Facebook Page dedicated not to women, but to people of color.
Through working on the project, Matt has noticed differences in perspectives from women in different areas of the world. But he also believes some ideas are common everywhere:
“In Latin America people are far more conservative about nudity whereas in Europe, people are far more liberal about taking their clothes off. And yet, the idea of the media focusing on similar body types, that’s universal. Europeans still don’t see real bodies in the media. In 2015, across the globe, people react to and respond to this idea.”
Matt hopes to continue exploring the themes of confidence and vulnerability in his future work. He is now currently working on an a project expanding the idea of nudity to include photographs people baring any aspect of their lives they don’t often allow others to see. “When people see The Nu Project I hope that the very last thing they notice is that no one is wearing clothes.” -Matt Blum, Photographer.
“Anyone who has gone skinny dipping can understand how something about nudity brings people closer together. It makes you a little more vulnerable and so allows you to connect with others a little bit quicker.” - Matt Blum, Photographer
“When a volunteer thinks ‘well I can’t get any more naked, and I’m in my own home, so might as well just be myself’, that’s when the shoot works.” -Matt Blum, Photographer
“My work with this project is to get out of the way of the image and let the story be told." -Matt Blum, Photographer
"In Brazil, I’d hear a lot of women say 'in our country, our bodies are the property of men.'” -Matt Blum, Photographer
"In Germany, we’d hear alot of women say “I’m just tired of photoshop, I want to be a part of a project where the people look like my mom and my friends and that’s valid and that’s beautiful.” -Matt Blum, Photographer
"Photographers are hired to capture super pretty things...But to show something that we typically don’t allow people to see; that’s always what is most interesting to me.” -Matt Blum, Photographer

While Chris Evans’ NSFW nude shot and Cardi B’s naked upload were both “oops” moments for the stars in 2020, there’s no denying that naked picture taboo is at an all-time low in Hollywood and beyond, thanks to the work of La La Land’s most enterprising celebrities. Call it the rise of the Kardashians or the rise of the internet (one and the same, really), but a nude picture just doesn’t have the same scandal factor it used to, especially when so many stars are choosing to proudly share their own shots. From fully nude photoshoots to targeted social media shares to getting ahead of another threatened leak, these celebrities have all shared their naked photos (on purpose) for the world to see — and helped pave the way for moments like Evans’ screen recording to be way less mortifying.
Here’s a definitive list of stars who have stripped down and hit “send.”
A version of this article was originally published in 2020.
Hilary Duff embraced the buff when she posed for Women’s Health. The actress spoke candidly about the process and journey she went on to love her body. “I’m proud of my body. I’m proud that it’s produced three children for me,” she told the outlet . “I’ve gotten to a place of being peaceful with the changes my body has gone through. I also want people to know a makeup artist was there putting glow all over my body and someone put me in the most flattering position.”
Salma Hayek was fantasizing about the “good old days” when she shared this throwback photo on Instagram, featuring a photo of the Oscar nominated actress posed up and covering up with a white towel. You can see the snapshot HERE .
Back in October, Olivia Wilde stripped down to her birthday suit for a True Botanicals campaign and couldn’t have looked more stunning or confident.
One of our favorite things about Heidi Klum ’s many Instagram nudes is how many are taken by her husband Tom Kaulitz — who clearly has a great eye for capturing his wife’s candid moments .
That’s right, Magic Mike himself shared a nude , and you won’t want to miss it. “You know when you in the make-up trailer a–hole naked holding a towel over your junk you about to do some s–t on set that you gonna have to prepare ya mama for before she see the movie,” Tatum wrote under this treat for his fans.
You better work, b*tch! In the months following her triumphant freedom from her decades-long conservatorship, Britney Spears has been showcasing her love for herself on the ‘Gram, and we’re loving the view.
One Tree Hill star Jana Kramer shared an empowering message about loving her naked body while sharing this nude showing off her new breast implants. “All I know is I was good enough before, and I’m good enough now,” she writes.
Elizabeth Hurley knows a good nude is the best way to get everyone’s attention…which is why she used this photo to clear up some recent rumors that she was planning a reality TV show (she’s not).
Even before her nude Vogue Czechoslovakia cover at age 55 that broke the internet, Porizkova was having fun stripping down and showing off on Instagram, as pictured here.
Ok, Josh Brolin! The actor is finishing 2020 strong with a completely nude photo taken by his wife, in which he’s stretched out on a patio chair with his feet on the table, drinking from a mug. “At the end of the day a life will judged by how often you were naked,” he writes. “Nobody told they meant metaphorically.”
Making sure she had everyone’s attention, Chelsea Handler showed everyone how she was celebrating turning 47 this video post she shared to Instagram.
Cindy Crawford ‘s daughter Kaia Gerber posted this nude snap for Vogue Japan to celebrate her 19th birthday.
Ashley Graham first broke barriers posing nude as a plus-size model and shattering discriminatory ideas of what it meant to be sexy. Graham also sparked a body hair debate after posting a pic of her unshaven underarms . Next, she detailed her pregnancy journey in just as much naked detail . Iconic.
In 2017, Dion bared it all for an intimate Vogue snap featuring her totally naked sitting on a dressing room chair with her legs crossed. The smokey eye and kicked over knee-high python boots are set dressing for Dion’s aura: high drama, high mystery, all diva.
Okay, technically wife Chrissy shared this for him, but we’re sure she got John’s full consent for this eye-opening pic of him totally naked.
Demi Moore’s naked and pregnant Vanity Fair cover shot by Annie Leibovitz caused an uproar in 1991 — and nearly 30 years later, we still can’t stop talking about it . Now that’s what you call lasting power.
A good reason to show your birthday suit? A real live birthday, of course. Gwyneth Paltrow definitively proved that she’s still sexy from head to toe with a naked, sunlit photo in her garden — about which daughter Apple wasn’t exactly thrilled .
When you’re a swimsuit model, lounging around in next to nothing is all part of the job. But our years of seeing Teigen’s naked pics have also shown us that this model is more comfortable in her naked skin than most.
In 2019, former Playboy model Brooke Burke shared a bottomless photo to celebrate gorgeous bodies at every age — though she admits it took her “a bit to get the courage to post.”
In 2016, Justin Bieber kept things simple with a lakeside photo of his bare behind. “Dat ass doe,” he wrote, poking fun at an otherwise totally vulnerable photo.
Sofia Vergara shared her first-ever full nude with the world with a Women’s Health cover at 45, a decision she made specifically because she recognized the newness of the opportunity: “Here’s a woman, 45, being able to show her body. It’s not like before, when it was just young girls,” she told t
