Sony Headphones Review - The Best Noise Cancelling Headphones
The fifth-generation model of Sony's noise cancelling headphones appears a bit different to the previous version but they sound as excellent. The headphones are light and comfortable, and feature many features that include Speak-to -Chat and Quick Attention mode. They also feature wear detection, as well as AI-powered DSEE Extreme upscaling audio.
The ANC is powerful, cutting train noises to the background rumble. A "pass through" option lets you hear outside sounds if you want.
1. Sony WH-1000XM5
Sony's headphones are consistently among the top in the industry in terms of noise cancellation. The fifth generation of WH-1000XM5s are not an exception, providing one of the most satisfying experiences we've had with noise cancellation headphones in recent years. When you put on the headphones and turn on noise cancellation, you're entering a world of silence. Engine noises as well as HVAC systems, creaking metal, and even conversations with neighbors all become muted.
The XM5s also shine on the audio aspect. Their large soundstage lets all elements of a song to shine and breathe. For instance, on the track by Billie Eilish called Bad Guy, the drums are pounding with a satisfying power and weight as the high-pitched vocals blend into the mix.
The XM5s also stand out for their intelligent interaction with your smartphone. They will detect when they are being removed from the head and stop the music. They can also detect that you are driving on a noisy highway and automatically reduce the noise cancellation level.
The WH-1000XM5s are also very green. They are made from recycled plastic and acrylonitrile styrene (ABS) with the headband being made of high-end fabric. They include a collapsible case that can be folded into itself, forming the compact pouch. Also included is a 3.5mm to 3.5mm aux cable so you can listen in a passive mode. The ear cups can be removed for simple cleaning. The XM5s also come with rechargeable batteries that can provide up to 20-hours of playing time. They are equipped with a fast charging system that can charge twice as fast as traditional USB headphones.
2. Bose QuietComfort 35
The Bose QuietComfort 35/QC35 II Wireless 2018 are more adaptable than the Audio-Technica ATHDR9BT Wireless headphones due to their incredibly comfortable fit, well-balanced sound profile and ANC feature that blocks out a lot of background noise. The Bose headphones also have longer battery life, lasting for 20 hours and take less time to charge and can be wired with a phone even when the battery is dead, making them a better choice for those in need of headphones that can function as commuting headphones, or travel headphones.
These premium Bose headphones come with a button that activates Google Assistant, which will play music as well as answer trivia questions and read your smartphone notifications. They have outstanding noise cancellation capabilities, and although they're getting long in the tooth by 2020 standards (and have successors to their sibling line, the QC35), you can still get great bargains on the headphones.
Like other Bose ANC headphones, the QC35s are capable of blocking out background noise, and their noise reduction technology has advanced over the years. They're not the best ANC headphone on the market in particular when compared with newer competitors. Audiophiles will want to look elsewhere for a better audio quality.
Similar to the Sonys, the QC35s can connect to two devices simultaneously and "audio share" one of them with a companion, which is great if you're looking to listen music in one ear while talking to someone else. They are also popular with frequent flyers, and have the classic Bose design that a lot of people love. SlickWraps or Skin Sticker decal covers are readily available at a reasonable price if you want to personalize your QC35s.
3. Sony WH-1000XM4
Sony's WH-1000XM4s aren't a lot in the way of aesthetic or comfort improvements from the M3s, but its noise cancellation is an entirely new beast. The company has swapped the old system-on chip (SoC) for a brand new one that claims to allow it to better listen to and react to ambient sounds in real-time, and reduce mid- and high-frequency sounds with its Dual Noise Sensor technology.
Two feedforward mics in each earcup suck up ambient sound, which is then processed by the QN1 noise canceling processor to reduce it as fast as is possible without affecting the quality of your music. The result is an amount of noise reduction that rivals the best headphones at this price point.
There's even a sensitivity control that lets you adjust the level of noise cancellation according to your needs. When you're in public for instance, you might want a little bit of ambient sound to filter through, while at home you'll want a more private listening experience. This feature utilizes geo-location to apply the correct setting based on your destination.
The WH-1000XM4s are able to be used for hands-free calls and boast a staggering 30 hours of battery life along with fast charging capabilities. The WH-1000XM4s come with an impressive Bluetooth connection that supports multipoint and NFC support. In my tests I noticed that the remastering of Paul McCartney’s Flaming pie was lively and clear as well as rough mixes and home recordings also sound clear.
Download the Sony Headphones Connect companion app to make the most of these headphones. You can alter the EQ and enjoy convenience features like Bluetooth multipoint. It also unlocks cool new features, like Sony's 360 Reality Audio immersive sound mastering process.
4. Sony WH-CH720N
If you're looking for headphones that provide excellent active noise cancelling at cost-effective prices the Sony WHCH720N are a great choice. They are a step up from their predecessor model, the 710N Wireless, with higher ANC performance and better audio quality. They also come with an elongated design and up to 35 hours of battery life.
However, if you're looking for flagship-level features like LDAC Bluetooth support and Smart Listening with voice assistant integration these headphones aren't made suitable for you. They also don't come with a carry case or auto-pause feature, and the earcups can't fold, which may make them difficult to travel with.
The quality of the construction of the WHCH720N is decent, but not as good the 1000XM5. The headband and earcups are made of plastic, which is light and comfortable to wear for long periods of time but will not stand up to the rigors of use or even the occasional tumble on hard surfaces. The design is heavy, and the earcups creak when you move. The controls are simple to use with tactile buttons that give satisfying click-like feedback. The ANC can be turned off and on with a single press of the power switch. Pressing and holding the button will activate Sony's Adaptive audio Control. This feature allows you to select an audio profile that is preset according to the type of headphones you're using the headphones (e.g., "Staying at Work" or "Running") or your current location (with your phone granted permission to determine this).
The WH-CH720N is one the best-value pairs of wireless noise cancelling headphones available on the market. You get great ANC for the price, lightweight comfort and up to 35 hours of battery life. If you're a frequent commuter, these headphones are worth checking out.
5. Earfun Air Pro
The Air Pro is no different. Earfun headsets and earbuds are well-known for their excellent value. They're great for calls and enthralling for music, while their ANC blocks a good amount of noise without making you feel like your ears are drowned. They also come with a lot of features found on other headphones that cost twice or more.
The earbuds are characterized by an over-emphasized bass range that adds rumble and a punch to the majority of tracks, while keeping the lead vocals and instruments clear and present. This makes them ideal for a variety of content. However, they may sound a bit boomy to some. They have a constant frequency response, which means they sound the same no matter the music you are listening to.

We listened to Missy Elliott's Get Ur Freak On, and the earbuds did an amazing job of highlighting the song's bass-heavy intro with energy and zeal. Stormzy's Vossi Bop had a similar agile sound with the treble accentuating the vocals and percussion.
On the phone, the voice quality is very good even in noisy environments. The earbuds are equipped with the most recent Qualcomm chip which ensures background noises, clicks and other distractions are kept to bay. This is the case even when talking on the London Underground during rush hour.
The earbuds' Bluetooth connectivity is also excellent with no issues during our testing. They connect and pair quickly and with minimal latency on iOS and Android devices. They are IPX5 waterproof, meaning they are suitable for rain or for workouts. However, they should not be submerged in water. They also come with a carry-on case that holds two and a half charge which is ideal for travelling.
