About Dolphin Emulator

Dolphin is a free and open-source video game console emulator for GameCube and Wii that runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, and Android.

It had its inaugural release in 2003 as freeware for Windows. Dolphin was the first GameCube emulator that could successfully run commercial games. After troubling development in the first years, Dolphin became free and open-source software and subsequently gained support for Wii emulation. Soon after, the emulator was ported to Linux and macOS.  As mobile hardware got more powerful over the years, running Dolphin on Android became a viable option.

Dolphin has been well received in the IT and video gaming media for its high compatibility, steady development progress, the number of available features, and the ability to play games with graphical improvements over the original consoles.

Features

Features of Dolphin include the ability to start games regardless of region, record tool-assisted speed runs, and the use of cheat codes with Action Replay and Gecko. Functions of the original GameCube controllers and Wii Remotes can be mapped to PC controllers. The emulator allows for the use of real GameCube controllers through the use of a USB adapter and Wii Remotes through a Bluetooth connection. Controller expansions are also supported, including the Wii MotionPlus adapter, Wii Nunchuk, Classic controller, Guitar, Drums, and Turntable.

Two kinds of network play are supported by Dolphin: Emulated local multiplayer and Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. The first only works among Dolphin users. It applies to games that by default have no online option. The second kind is for online gameplay for WFC-supported Wii games with other Dolphin users as well as real Wii users.

Game progress can be saved on virtual GameCube Memory Cards, emulated Wii flash memory, and save states. Dolphin features a Memory Card Manager which allows the transfer of saved files to and from virtual GameCube memory cards.

In conjunction with an integrated Game Boy Advance emulator, Dolphin supports linking GameCube and Game Boy Advance titles.

Dolphin Progress Report

Dolphin Emulator

November, and December 2021, January 2022

This year, we have reached a milestone that has been in operation for almost a decade. In late 2012, Sonicadvance1 began work on Dolphin's ARM JIT. At the time, there were no devices that would allow dolphins to run at full speed, but that was not the goal. We just wanted to see if we could do it; It felt like a fun, challenging project.

However, as time went on, the idea turned into a curiosity to pass. Users were more than happy to donate to cover the hardware costs of living on the threshold of a rapidly evolving ecosystem, allowing ARM development to flourish. By 2015, Sonicadvance1 has given developers and the community a Mario Kart: Double Dash !! Surprised to see footage of time trial mode running at full speed.

On that note, we're pleased to announce that Dolphin's AArch64 JIT has finally reached the same features as Dolphin's x86-64 JIT. This means that every PowerPC notification and every major JIT feature supported by x86-64 JIT is now supported in AArch64 JIT! And it's a good time for ARM in general, every generation of processors is pushing the boundaries, and companies like Apple have adopted the architecture for larger and higher power devices like their M1 Mac line. For those on mobile phones and tablets, Adreno-enabled devices provide enough graphics drivers to get the right experience right now. And since a serious problem was solved a few days ago, performance on Adreno GPUs has skyrocketed. You don't have to go far for that news, we promise.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg; We have a three-month change and some other important basic news. We've significantly improved the user experience on macOS and restored support for older devices. In fact, we will detail the status of Dolphin's macOS support at the end of the report.

And we haven't talked about any simulation solutions yet. There have been many changes in the last three months that would have been the main attraction of the progress report in general. The three-month gap between reports was not due to a lack of changes.

Want to have Revolution games on Netplay? You can. Hate the EA VP6 bugs? Make them a thing of the past with new options. Want to work on your favorite LogicOp game GLES or MoltenVK? Chances are, it does now! The list goes on and on, but it will take a long time to figure everything out, so let's just go inside. Please enjoy the November, December, and January progress reports!

How Setting up Dolphin Emulator

Setting up Dolphin Emulator is fairly easy, and it works out of the box on most configurations. Install it, get your game files, and launch. That’s really all you need in most cases, and any specific changes you may make will likely be to the detriment of some other core aspect of the game. That’s because Dolphin Emulator is shipped with default settings for the most optimal performance, so all of the most popular titles across GameCube and Wii will already be optimized.

For now, anything that’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 or newer should do the job for basic emulation. Any newer chips than that will progressively get better performance, but I would personally class the Snapdragon 845 as the bare minimum for playing most big titles. Games that don’t require as much processing power will still work fine on a Snapdragon 845, but you should also be mindful of thermal throttling.

Dolphin Emulator Setup

Thermal throttling is when your phone decreases the amount of work it completes in order to cool down, which can have a detrimental effect on performance as your phone heats up. Using any of the best Android phones available on the market today will more or less be good enough.

Once you have Dolphin Emulator set up, you’ll need to copy over your game ISOs to your smartphone. We do not condone piracy or the illegal sharing of games, and you’ll need to dump your own titles to be able to play them on your smartphone. You can rip games specifically for use on Dolphin Emulator by following this official guide on the official Dolphin Emulator website. You can do it with a hacked Nintendo Wii, or with some older DVD readers and a computer. Dolphin Emulator can also play WAD files (Wii Channel files), and that guide also shows you how to dump those too.
