A year in lockdown has inspired all sorts of creative outlets for horniness : People are having more phone sex , snapping artful nudes , and investing in vibrators . So if you’ve always been curious about butt plugs, it’s never too late to explore new horizons. Experts agree that a butt plug can enhance your sex life solo or with a partner, as long as you’re patient and prepare properly.
The most important rule is to go slowly. “It’s important to start small and use a lot of water-based lube (silicone can degrade your toys) so you’re not damaging anything,” says Gigi Engle, certified sexologist and author of All the F*cking Mistakes: A Guide to Sex, Love, and Life . “People think that because they can handle a big penis or dildo in other parts of their bodies that they can handle anything, but that’s not true.”
Whether you’re new to anal penetration or not, it’s important to remember that it should never be painful. “Getting turned on first will help you relax,” says queer sex writer and influencer Molly-Margaret Johnson . “Masturbate or use a vibrator or your fingers to warm up your asshole.” She also recommends romancing yourself with ambience for deeper relaxation. “Have a glass of wine, smoke a little, light a candle, and turn on some sexy music.”
Ty Mitchell , a gay adult entertainer and writer also known as “ Probottom ,” explains why butt plugs are so pleasurable. “It’s a sensation of fullness and a feeling of pressure that permeates the whole pelvic area that’s intense and good,” says Mitchell. “You just have to lean into it with a little bit of submission.” And if you’re hesitant about making a mess, don’t worry. “Sex is inherently messy, whether it’s emotionally messy or physically messy, and that’s what makes it amazing,” says Johnson. “Whether it’s shitting, squirting, sweating, cumming, or whatever, it’s just part of the deal.”

"With the pudendal nerve, direct stimulation to the anus can also stimulate the vagina," she tells Cosmo . "Plus, we know that with all those nerve endings in the anus, only 20 percent of them are in active use to keep things working. The other 80 percent is all about sensation." And there's only one way to unlock that 80 percent: with experimentation and touch.
Certified sex therapist Shadeen Francis , LMFT, CST, agrees, adding, "Anal plugs stimulate the sensitive nerve endings inside the anus, and can lead to powerful orgasms. Some plugs feel good for the pressure of fullness, some arc towards the prostate in people who have them (or the A-spot for people with vulvas), and some even pulse or vibrate!" What's not to like??
First things first: Lube is your friend, and we C-A-N-N-O-T emphasize that enough. "Before you grab the butt plug, though, you have to remember that, unlike the vagina, the anus is not self-lubricating," says Dr. Oriowo. "This means you have to use lube. Don’t be shy with it, either—use just a bit more than you think is enough. Better to have more lube than less."
The type of lube you use matters, too. "Always read your ingredients list, and never put anything in any hole that isn't safe to go in your mouth," Francis adds. "As a tip for your lube choice, think about what you might like to do in your butt play session. Silicone lube is long-lasting but can be hard to clean and can't be used with silicone toys. Water-based lube is friendly for everyone, but you will need to reapply. Oil-based lubes give a lot of slip but, depending on the ingredients, can contain allergens (e.g., coconut oil-based lubes are a no-go if you have a nut allergy) and will absolutely stain your bedsheets."
And ofc, you want to start small and work your way up. As Francis points out, the tissues of the anus are delicate and sensitive, so be gentle with yourself, bb. "If—after exploring stimulation of the sensitive opening from the outside—you'd like to try penetration, start small," she says. "Always start smaller than you think: a little finger perhaps, or a narrow toy (with a flared base, of course). You can always go up in size as smaller toys become more comfortable. Even if over time you fancy yourself a bit of a size-slut, look for toys that start narrow and gradually increase in size to make insertion more comfortable."
According to Francis, beginners should look for butt plugs "with a flared base to prevent the risk of the toy getting pulled into your anal canal and lodged inside." And just like with all sex toys , you should opt for a plug that's made with non-porous, body-safe materials. As Francis tells us, "You have many options, such as silicone (which comes in many densities so you can choose between soft and firm toys), glass (which can give you a cool visual if you're into seeing all the details), porcelain (for a light but firm toy), and metal (for added weight and temperature play)."
