Frankfurt has long been Germany’s trade center. And with trade comes prostitution and drugs. The city takes a pragmatic, compassionate, and seemingly effective “harm reduction” approach to both of these challenges.

This painting is a thought-provoking reminder that the phenomenon of wealthy old men setting their sights on younger women is nothing new…especially in a trading center like Frankfurt. Ever since the Middle Ages, Frankfurt’s thriving prostitution industry has gone hand-in-hand with its trade fairs. Today, prostitution thrives with the convention center. Like hotels, prostitutes double their prices during big trade fairs. Sex workers note that business varies with the theme of the trade show: While the auto show is boom time, and the butchers’ convention is famously hungry, they complain that Frankfurt’s massive book fair is a bust.

Prostitution is big business here, and perfectly legal since 2002. German sex workers get health care just like any other workers, and pay taxes (on an estimated €14 billion of declared income each year). As I marveled the poignant sight of high-rise banks and office buildings towering above Frankfurt’s brothels, my guide said, “Prostitutes, who pay about €130 a day to rent their rooms, cover their rent by the end of the businessmen’s lunch break.”

A couple of blocks in front of Frankfurt’s train station, you’ll find a row of high-rise brothels, or “eros towers.” With all the businessmen coming into town, there’s no way to outlaw prostitution. So the city has decided to contain and control prostitution into what it calls a “tolerance area.” Within about a block of here are about 20 of these five-story brothels in original late-19th-century apartment flats — each filled with prostitutes. The sex workers, who are mostly from Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Thailand (and only about 2 percent German), charge around €20. These women rent their rooms and essentially run their own little businesses. Crazy Sexy is biggest of these brothels, with 180 rooms (51 Elbestrasse). The first three floors are female sex workers, while transvestites occupy the fourth floor. (My guide said, “Gender reassignment surgery is expensive, and many of these people are saving up for their operation.”)

Walking the streets of Frankfurt, you may see a gang of junkies congregating at a government-funded heroin maintenance clinic (also known as a “Café Fix”). In the 1980s, Frankfurt was plagued by one of the largest open drug scenes in Europe. Its parks (and police) were overwhelmed with needle addicts. Then Frankfurt decided to get creative, take the crime out of the equation, and go for pragmatic harm reduction. In 1992, Frankfurt began offering “pump rooms” to its hard-drug users. The idea: provide a safe haven for addicts (mostly heroin, but also crack and methadone) to hygienically maintain their habit. Heroin addicts would still buy their stuff on the street, but inject here with clean needles, medical help standing by, and a place to stay if needed. It’s strictly not for first-time users, and no dealing or sharing of drugs is allowed. These centers provide a safe and caring place for addicts — who are considered not criminals, but sick people — to maintain their habit and get counseling and medical help. Two decades later, overdose deaths are down 75 percent, and there’s never been a death in a “drug consumption room.” Locals consider the program a success and are accustomed to seeing groups of junkies hanging out in front of these places. While unsightly, the compassionate “harm reduction” approach much of Europe uses to deal with this problem saves lives. Meanwhile, the USA continues to suffer double the heroin-related deaths as Europe (despite Europe’s much larger population).
Rick, I was watching the Finland episode with you on the boat with your cousin. There was discussion of taxes and govt and how the basic needs are provided by the govt and how happy they are to pay taxes for that benefit. It struck me that the whole country is only 5M people so they are quite close to their central govt where in a country of 400M there are <500 people ruling the central govt, it is no wonder Americans feel detached from Washington and even there own sate govt in some of the larger populated states (not Washington state). It was also mentioned that there was 100 percent employment and the country counted on immigrants to perform the lower labor tasks as the US did when the Italians, Irish, Germans, Pols, etc immigrated not to mention the Mexican and South/Central Americans, and Chinese. I don't think you can draw a comparison to today's US but certainly the US went through that phase in country development. As we can learn form the Spanish, Italians, and Greeks today, when employment percentage drops, this socialized govt tends to fall apart as the expectations for basic needs continues without sufficient taxes coming in. I think the US needs to reduce centralized power and then we might get back to something similar to what the Norwegians enjoy.

I booked this hotel for my wife while she was in Frankfurt and I was back in the US. She called me in tears saying she had been grabbed, people were doing drugs on the property and prostitutes were walking in and out. If she had stayed another 5 minutes I would have called the police to escort her out. Sheets had been cleaned, but were full of stains. We don't complain hardly ever, but the decision to leave was a matter of safety and health. Only the brave need stay at this place. The owner was very rude and refused to refund the reservation even though my wife had been there for only an hour. More
The location is both good and bad: not far from the central station and most touristic attractions, but at the same time it's not the best or the nicest area in the city. I'd personally advice not to go there alone in the night. But the prices are quite adequate. Unfortunately there wasn't free wifi at the hotel, but if you need just a reasonably priced place to stay in Frankfurt without any luxury, it will surely be an ok place to stay.
I decide for this hotel since it was near the train station, I didnt't know that this part of town could be so terrible. Only drunk and drugged people around. I felt totally insecure. Further more the people at the hotel spoke a bad german and didn't understand much of what I asked. I had forgotten my phone charger at home and asked if they could lend me one, it took 3 receptionists and 12 hrs to lend me one for 3 hrs. It was just awful. I was really glad when I checked out. I was supposed to be there with me friend, but her airplane got delayed and they still left me in the double room, even though the hotel was pretty much empty. Disgusting. Never again this hotel, nor Frankfurt.
Hotel is bad and old. But have good location to city center and main train station. Having red district neiberhood as Amsterdam. Is Chinese hotel or what?! Poor English language on reception. Clean room.. can't say noting special but it is ok...
Very old and dated hotel. No basic facilities such as free wifi or an iron board. The staff have no idea of Frankfurt so could not provide basic directions or recommendations on where to go. Also lots of suspicious characters loiter outside and I was stopped on tow occasions but quickly I moved on. Would not recommend at all.
Ιt really looks better in the photos. The atmosphere is gloomy and the hotel is very dated. The elevator and the corridors on every floor smell of kitchen (and not the pleasant smell of food being prepared). That's probably because there is a chinese restaurant at the bottom of the hotel. The colours on the walls and in the rooms are dreadful. The room itself was gloomy and they had used a ton of a very heavy air freshene
