Bought the book, flipped through it and threw it in the trash a few days later. It only gives the most cursory direction and overview of the fundamentals such as warm up, exploring and basic backdoor intercourse, which are all essential for backdoor play to be fun and pleasurable. Instead, well over 1/2 of the book is on crazy types of enemas, BDSM, fisting and other off the wall activities that going to be a turn off to 80% of those reading the book. The illustrations of the very few positions mentioned are freaky and pretty much a turn off. Here is an idea, why not make this illustrations passionate, exciting and tasteful for a majority of the readers (Do you like seeing a ugly tattooed, pierced butch girl doing another girl?). All I can say is I think Tristan's perception of normalcy is so warped at this point that she has no clue how repulsive most of what she is promoting is to a vast majority of adults. Do you really think shoving huge objects up your partners behind including your entire hand is really what most people are interested in or going to find pleasurable? How about pumping so much fluid up there that they feel like they are going to burst? Some people will read this review and write it off as coming from a prudish person that is way to uptight, but I can say my spouse and I are very creative, passionate and playful (wouldn't have bought the book in the first place if we weren't), but take my word for it that this book crosses the line over to the perverse. I am sure that it will appeal to certain people that have really crazy and sick fetish, but take my work for it you don't identify yourself that way you'll want to make this book a hard pass.
I think this is great for beginners, but perhaps not if you're more experienced, although I still found it a good and interesting read with a mostly inclusive stance. It was definitely inclusive of GLBTI. I do think it could be more inclusive of fat female bodies, or mention that positions might change (and how). Also, I admire Taormino and her feminist approach but I think hairy genitals are liked by some women and by their partners (me and mine, for example). ignoring this I think perpetuates the idea that shaved or hairless is best, preferred and puts pressure on women that's already there. Some of us get rashes and can't do it and others prefer not to. But, overall it's great.
I was seriously hoping the 2nd Edition would have revised illustrations but that is not the case. Not since the original Joy of Sex (naked hippies) has a sex guide been in such need of improved depictions. Regardless of the information provided, representations of overweight, tattooed lesbians with mohawks and strap ons (and other unconventional kinds of people) send the message that anal sex is an unnatural act engaged in by deviants. By not showing depictions of ordinary people engaging in anal sex as just another possible variation, the author did a great disservice to anyone trying to introduce the subject to their partner. My girlfriend was very apprehensive about the idea and not terribly experienced sexually. When I suggested this book, she became much more comfortable about the idea and was willing to explore it, especially given that the author was a female. But one look at the pictures of various freakazoids in the book was enough to completely turn her off of the idea. Months spent being patient and encouraging her to come out of her shell little by little was undone in minutes as a result of illustrations of people she found repulsive. And it wasn't the act that put her off, she was actually intrigued a little bit by some adult films which showed anal sex. So now I have to pretty much start over with her, and it will be with a different book on the subject. But first I have to undo the problems created by this one. So if your partner isn't the type to be put off by such depictions, she probably doesn't need a book to help her explore the idea of anal sex. But if she is the hesitant type (and that is probably why most of you are considering this book), this one may very well be counter productive.
Have a woman in your life that is open minded enough or a bit curious about anal sex? This book was a terrific way to make talking about it and experimenting with it possible. In my opinion, this works best if your woman really is already curious about anal sex. I dont think it would have been as good if I just gave the book to her and said "hey babe, read this...this is something I wanna do...". Author does a great job explaining all the benefits as well as steps in the process. Found it very helpful that author was a woman, as I felt that made the way she talked about the topic all the more appealing to the woman in my life. It's kinda like a woman talking to a woman about the pleasures and excitement of anal sex. Very helpful indeed, for both of us.
Lots of information and inspiration. Published more than 15 years ago but behind the times? No. As relevant as ever.
As a guide book it was great. She covered same material you can get from any google search but what was most valuable was the personal experience and anecdotes. It was good useful information you don't get just anywhere. AND it was well written; so i didn't want to rip my eyeballs out in frustration.
This book is both interesting enough to keep the readers attention and instructional to help the novice to semi experienced couples learn more about anal sex and adding to their sex life. It got my spouse and I talking intimately and openly about the subject. We would recommend it to anyone interested in adding anal sex to their sexual repotoire.
Answered many questions my lady and I had. Well written cleared s lot of misconceptions up Madevus both feel more comfortable in venturing into our pleasures

Very surprised this book has good reviews. The look and feel of the book once you open is well out dated. Nil images and poor drawings. Not much visual aspect and nothing you cant grab of Google. Save your money.

Well worth a read
This is a comprehensive and frank look into the world of ass play and i have to say i couldn't have been happier. It covers the basics, along with illustrations that don't take themselves too seriously, as well as more advanced information. It really is a one stop shop for everything you need to know about anal sex. Getting my partner to read it is proving problematic, but since he enjoys a bit of backdoor fun i've made it clear he'll have to look at it before he get's any. Totally worth the money and a must for anyone wishing to participate in butt play.
