Berserk: The Golden Age Arc ( Japanese : ベルセルク 黄金時代篇 , Hepburn : Beruseruku Ōgon Jidai-hen ) is a Japanese anime film trilogy, which adapts Kentaro Miura 's Berserk manga series, specifically its Golden Age arc, and was produced by Studio 4°C . The first two films, The Egg of the King and The Battle for Doldrey , were released in Japan in February and June 2012, and the third film, The Advent , was released in February 2013. In North America, Viz Media has licensed the trilogy for English home video release.

A soldier named Guts attracts the attention of a mercenary group, The Band of the Hawk, when he kills an enemy champion during a siege. He is forced into joining the group after being defeated in single combat by its leader, Griffith . The Band of the Hawk are employed by the Kingdom of Midland for its Hundred Year War against the Tudor Empire, and Griffith rises in the kingdom's hierarchy after a successful battle. During another siege, Guts and Griffith encounter the demon Nosferatu Zodd, who notices the pendant around Griffith's neck and warns Guts that Griffith will be his doom. Griffith's rise in status is ill-received by Midland's noblemen, and there is a failed assassination attempt on Griffith by the king's brother, Julius. Griffith charges Guts with murdering Julius, and Guts also kills the noble's young son. Guts, emotionally scarred by his actions, overhears Griffith say that The Band of the Hawk are his comrades, but for people to be friends they must purse their own dreams and not someone else's.

Guts and Casca are separated from The Band of the Hawk, and fend off attacks by the Tudor's cruel commander Adon and his men. Guts defeats most of Adon's men while covering Casca's escape, but begins to lament his life's path and decides he will eventually leave the Band of the Hawk, find and pursue his own dream, and become a true friend to Griffith. Later, the Band of the Hawk participates in the battle to capture the impenetrable Fortress of Doldrey and end the Hundred Years War, wherein Casca kills Adon. A month after the war's end, Guts parts ways with Griffith after defeating him in a duel. Griffith is distraught at Guts' departure, and in a lapse of judgment he is caught sleeping with the king's daughter, Charlotte. Griffith is charged with treason and imprisoned in the Tower of Rebirth while the members of the Band of the Hawk are branded outlaws.

A year after Guts' departure from the Band of the Hawk, he returns to aid them in freeing Griffith from the Tower of Rebirth. However, when they find Griffith he is barely alive, rendered mute, and physically withered after months of torture. Griffith attempts suicide, and his pendant reacts to his despair, opening a portal to another dimension experiencing a solar eclipse that draws in him and The Band of the Hawk. There, they encounter archdemons known as The God Hand and Griffith is told that his tribulations have been leading to this moment, when Griffith agrees to sacrifice his allies in exchange for being reborn as Femto, a member of the God Hand. The Band of the Hawk are slaughtered by the God Hand's monstrous Apostles (former humans like Nosferatu Zodd) and Femto rapes Casca. Guts loses his left arm and right eye trying to save Casca, but Casca loses her sanity from the nightmarish ordeal. Guts and Casca are spirited back to their world by the mysterious Skull Knight, who tells Guts he has been branded by the God Hand and will be subjected to nightly attacks by evil creatures. Guts leaves Casca under the care of former comrade Rickert and embarks on a journey to hunt down Apostles and the God Hand.

The Japanese voice cast features Hiroaki Iwanaga as Guts (replacing Nobutoshi Canna from the original anime), Takahiro Sakurai as Griffith (replacing Toshiyuki Morikawa ), and Toa Yukinari as Casca (replacing Yūko Miyamura ). [4] [5] The English voice cast features Marc Diraison as Guts, Kevin T. Collins as Griffith, and Carrie Keranen as Casca, all reprising their roles from the original anime. [6]

The project was first announced as a new anime project in September 2010 on a wraparound jacket band on volume 35 of the Berserk manga. [11] Berserk: Golden Age Arc I - The Egg of the King ( ベルセルク 黄金時代篇I 覇王の卵 , Beruseruku Ōgon Jidai-hen Wan Haō no Tamago ) was released on February 4, 2012 in Japan. [12] [13]

Berserk: Golden Age Arc II - The Battle for Doldrey ( ベルセルク 黄金時代篇II ドルドレイ攻略 , Beruseruku Ōgon Jidai-hen Tsū Dorudorei Koryaku ) was released on June 23, 2012 in Japan. [14]

Berserk: Golden Age Arc III - The Advent ( ベルセルク 黄金時代篇III 降臨 , Beruseruku Ōgon Jidai-hen Surī Kōrin ) was released on February 1, 2013 in Japan. [15]

In North America, Viz Media has licensed all three films for a home video release. [16] The Egg of the King was released on November 27, 2012. [17] The Battle for Doldrey was released on August 6, 2013. [18] The Advent was released on April 15, 2014. [19] The Golden Age Arc has also been available for streaming on Netflix . [20]

The soundtracks for the film series are composed and arranged by Shirō Sagisu , with the theme song composed and arranged by Susumu Hirasawa . [21] The insert song of all films, "Aria", is performed by Hirasawa, [22] a live performance (from Phonon 2555 Vision ) is included on the home video releases of the second film, another live version is on the Nomonos and Imium DVD; the ending theme of the first film, " Beautiful Things " ( ウツクシキモノ , Utsukushii Mono ) , is performed by Japanese-American singer-songwriter Ai (in an uncharacteristic epic ballad style) and composed by Rykeyz and Redd Styiez; [23] [24] lastly, the ending theme of the third film, "Breakthrough", is performed by Kaname Kawabata of CHEMISTRY , written by Kawabata, Hidenori Tanaka and UTA, and arranged by Sagisu, Miho Hazama and CHOKKAKU. [25] A special TV program, narrated by Akio Ōtsuka (the voice actor for the Skull Knight), that summarized the events of the first two movies, used the Hirasawa song "Horde of Thistledown" ( 冠毛種子の大群 , "Kanmō Shushi no Taigun" ) (from The Secret of the Flowers of Phenomenon ) as its ending theme. [26]

In Japan, Berserk: The Golden Age Arc 1 - The Egg of the King brought in $594,707 with a gross of $1,348,352, [27] and the last film in the trilogy brought in less, with an opening weekend of $280,248 and grossing $399,445. [28]

Kotaku 's Richard Eisenbeis panned the first two installments of the trilogy, but described the third installment, Berserk: Golden Age Arc III: Descent , as supreme and delivering an experience surpassing the original manga both in emotional turmoil and brutal violence. [29]

For fans of the manga Berserk and its adaptations.
I just finished golden arc 3, oh man what a series. Sooo i’m curious when will 4th be released!?!? I gotta know!!
They bombed super hard and they'll never make a sequel
They will definitely most likely never make any more Berserk. However, I've said this before, and prepare for a crazy run-on sentence, but by the time the manga finishes, if there's any semblance of a race between, say, Madhouse, Bones, or Netflix, or someone competent, to plan on finally giving a full adaptation of Berserk, then it's conceivable that 4c, considering their prior experience (and eventual competence-- cough Eclipse cough ), they may be motivated to try and steal that opportunity back.
Perhaps much less likely if the same people who worked on the trilogy are no longer there. But if all or most of the same people are still all working there, and the manga is complete, with an ending that has positive reception (perhaps especially if it has significantly positive reception), I can easily see 4c sticking the highest hand in the air. I mean, Madhouse, etc, can obviously make a good case, but 4c can at least be like, "Hey, uhh, we already got our hands wet with this, we're gonna continue what we started, now. Also no more cgi / also we have mastered CGI to godly levels."
But when it comes down to it, none of that is all that relevant to OP, I admit. I'm sure OP's point had more to do with, "will there ever be more movies?" as opposed to "will 4c specifically ever do more?" Because it really doesn't matter who, as long as we get something good so people who don't read the manga still have something worthy to watch instead (and of course for the manga readers to enjoy, too).
Unrelated: Did Miura comment on the movies? I know it may not mean much considering I think he said he liked the 2016/2017. But, still, that would be interesting to read his praise/critique (although I suppose that isn't really his thing to do, though, even if it IS regarding his own work--it may be more of just a general remark).
Thats a you thing to say. Not reality
How do you figure they bombed? That shit was lit
There are only 3 of those movies. The story continues in the 2016 and 2017 anime, but they have very low production values, so I would highly recommend you read the manga (from the start, without skipping anything) if you want to experience the rest of the story.
But they aren't from the same production team
Also to note: while the '16/'17 takes place after the events of Golden Age, it isn't a direct continuation, as it of course skips ahead a decent amount, leaving out plots in between.
Not entirely different to Golden Age itself though, as that skips Black Swordsman. But at least with GA skipping BS, it isn't going forward in the story chronologically, so it's fundamentally easier to forgive.
I read a lot of it, but really enjoyed the original anime which ended abruptly. I was hoping these movies would at least go a bit further...
But whats the anime name or the manga i dont care how i finish
I think the 3 are all we'll get, it was the golden arc because it was the golden age, the third movie marks the start of the dark age
There'll not be more films due critics from the fans, as a strong evidence, they don't wanted an adaptation that cut many scenes, and the characters that were from the manga, but i don't think it was real justice, the films were correctly faithful to the story, i wish they could have continued it.
STUDIO 4C didn't say anything yet to explain when will be there more films adaptations of it, so it's a good chance to wait for the next arc cinematic adaptation.
There'll not be more films due critics from the fans
Actualy was the low number of sale not because of fans.
Also not true. You assume someone won't take on a project of that nature. If you speak in absolutes you are probably wrong
And here I am 4 years later while the creator being passed away
Literally just finished these arcs and came across your post
I feel like we will get a live action before we get another good movie/anime (if we get anything)

A modern manga masterpiece, Berserk’s five story arcs thus far are some of the best written in the medium.
An epic over three decades in the making , Berserk has seen multiple animated adaptations, but nothing compares to the manga. Kentaro Miura’s dark fantasy saga is as beautifully drawn as it is masterfully written. Berserk is an incredibly heavy story, one that doesn’t shy away from depicting a wide range of graphic violence, sexual or otherwise.
With that in mind, it’s worth treading carefully with Berserk as its content can be overwhelming, but the story Miura tells is second to none and he does approach his heavier subject matter with tact (more so & with greater maturity as the series progresses.) The story itself centers around Guts, “The Black Swordsman,” whose Mark of Sacrifice summons demons to him.
Berserk ’s first story focuses on Guts’ life & reputation as The Black Swordsman, showcasing a dystopian world where tragedy lurks around every corner. While Berserk might come off “edgy” at first glance, it doesn’t take long for Guts’ nuances to show as the series flashes back in time to dig through his backstory. A modern manga masterpiece, Berserk ’s five story arcs thus far are some of the best written in the medium.
Beginning in 2010, Fantasia is Berserk ’s most recent story arc and has so far centered itself on fleshing out the series’ more mystical elements. Specifically, the arc begins as a result of Griffith– Guts’ archenemy and the story’s chief antagonist– triggering the Great Roar of the Astral World, an event which spliced the physical and astral realms together.
With no distinction between the realm of man and that of spirits, a new age is ushered in which humanity has no choice but to take shelter in Griffith’s kingdom, Falconia. All the while he leads the march as humanity’s last hope as Guts and his party enjoy the boat ride of towards Elfhelm, in hopes of restoring Casca’s mental state (which Griffith himself destroyed.)
The Fantasia arc has primarily been moving pieces around Berserk ’s playing board, setting the stage for Guts’ inevitable confrontation with the God Hand. There’s plenty of intrigue being built, but the slow pace of Guts’ nautical voyage ultimately did the arc no favors, even with the engaging Sea God distraction. Still, Fantasia is still early goings compared to other arcs. We’ve yet to see its full scope.
The Black Swordsman arc opens the series and has something of a reputation for being skippable. Ignore anyone who says to move on ahead to the Golden Age arc, as the Black Swordsman arc is not just essential to understanding the full scope of Guts’ arc (obviously,) it’s an incredibly unique story in the context of Berserk ’s world.
Beginning long after Guts had begun wandering the world as the Black Swordsman, there’s an oppressive and lonely quality to Guts’ journey. He constantly shuns away his only companion, Puck, and he shows very little kindness to those he “helps.” Guts is a vengeful, almost vile man, but the action is incredible, the atmosphere is second-to-none, and the finale recontextualizes the entire story.
The God Hand’s introduction, hints at Guts & Griffith’s relationship, and Guts crying at the very end of the arc sell the Black Swordsman arc as so much more than what it appears at first glance. Guts is far more nuanced than meets the eye, and revisiting the arc with a full perspective of what Berserk becomes makes it immensely enjoyable even if it doesn’t shape up to the story at its best.
The Conviction arc is notable for almost serving as two arcs: Lost Children and Binding Chain/Birth Ceremony. The Lost Children arc is tonally very much in-line with the Black Swordsman arc, but with the elegance Kentaro Miura developed while penning the Golden Age arc. Great action, somber, and excellent development for Guts, Lost Children leads directly into the rest of the Conviction arc.
Conviction fleshes out Berserk ’s world even more by introducing the Holy Iron Chain Knights– new antagonist foils for Guts on his lonesome adventure. The supporting cast is also rounded out by Serpico and Farnese, two incredibly memorable antagonists who even go on to join Guts’ party when all is said & done.
The arc’s main antagonist, Mozgus, stands out as one of Berserk ’s most memorable villains– a character you really love to hate. While the Conviction arc lacks the same punch that the Golden Age and Falcon of the Millennium Empire arcs have, it’s the only post-Golden Age arc to resemble the Black Swordsman arc, which has immense value in and of itself.
The Golden Age arc is widely considered Berserk ’s best story arc, and for good reason. Flashing back from the Black Swordsman arc, Golden Age focuses on Guts’ entire youth– beginning from his birth and ending with his betrayal at the hands of Griffith. Golden Age shows a lighter world, one full of hope and promise that matches Guts’ youth.
