Guts is a skilled swordsman who joins forces with a mercenary group named 'The Band of the Hawk', lead by the charismatic Griffith, and fights with them as they battle their way into the royal court.
Guts was brought up by a mercenary group since birth. After killing his guardian in self-defence, he runs away. Years later, he encounters Griffith and The Band of the Hawk. The Hawks fight for the King of Midland, and after winning the 100-year war against the neighbouring Chuda, they become the King's personal guard. However, once they reach the top, things take a turn for the worse.
I just finished watching Berserk for the second time in my life. This time it felt different than the first but one thing remained: Berserk made me feel strong emotions once again. This is a very tricky anime to deal with. The story is excellent, the characters are excellent and the flow of the series is excellent. Kingdoms Chudor and Midland are fighting in a 100 years long war against each other. A war that is now fought only because it is a war, neither side can hardly remember why the war started. Guts is a young mercenary, who gathers attention with his phenomenal fighting skills with his huge sword. After a battle, he encounters a band of mercenaries who try to steal his gold he gained from his battle. It appears that the mercenary group had been fighting with the opposite side that Guts fought. Guts handles the attack, but when the leader of the mercenaries, Griffith challenges him, he loses. After resting, Guts wants a rematch with Griffith with following terms: If Guts wins, he can walk away and if Griffith wins, he can do whatever he wants with Guts. Ultimately Griffith wins - again - and forces Guts to join his group of mercenaries, The Band of the Hawk. That is where their journey together begins, Griffiths journey to world domination... Of course, this is only the beginning of the whole story but it is futile to tell it any further here. Berserk has three main characters: Guts, Griffith and Casca, the female captain of The Band of the Hawk. And I have to say, that the chemistry between these three characters is one of the most interesting ones I have ever witnessed in any story. They have very different personalities that react with each other very unpredictably. Guts is a man who has learned to live his life through battles, he knows nothing else but the adrenaline and it's temptation in the battlefield. Griffith is a charismatic leader who aims for only one goal: his dream of becoming the king of the world. No. Matter. What. Casca is a women whose life changed when Griffith saved her when she was just a girl. She has followed Griffith ever since, becoming a strong warrior in the process. But this is only the surface. All of these characters become different in the viewers eyes with each passing moment. As the series evolves, Guts, Griffith, Casca and even all the other characters (Corcus, Pippin, Judeou etc.) change and reveal surprising elements of their inner self. It is very fascinating to watch how the love - hate relationship between Casca and Guts evolves and to what direction or how Griffith goes extreme making his actions very questionable and his motives difficult to analyse. It is interesting to watch the electricity between Guts and Griffith, how Griffith becomes dependable on Guts and how ultimately Guts pulls all the strings. Everything Guts does affects Griffith. Guts makes Griffiths ascending towards his dream possible and Guts has the power to ruin it all. It is also very fascinating to see all the philosophical aspects of Berserk. Each person is what he/she is for a reason and these reasons define what these persons live for. Sometimes they don't know why they do what they do or why they live their lives. And in the times of desperation they question their motives and desires, not surely knowing what they want from life. The thoughts of these persons make you wonder your own existence as well and the meaning of your life. Does it have a meaning? Does it have to have? Or do we live here just because we live here? If a series can make me think these kind of questions, I believe it has achieved more value than just entertainment... Yes, Berserk truly is very deep in a realistic way. The watcher becomes one with the characters as the series goes on. All the philosophical aspects combined with the ruthless violence and darkness makes Berserk truly an amazing series. But the thing that makes this series so unique is it's ending. All of you who have watched this series know from what I'm talking about. The original story of Berserk doesn't end where this anime ends (and I have not read the manga...Not yet) and since there will be no second season, this anime stands for it's own. The ending makes me mad. It makes me sad, shocked, petrified, horrified...In a good way. I can still remember when I watched berserk for the first time, I couldn't believe the ending, it was so shocking! NOBODY can end a series like this, this makes even Twin Peaks's ending look soft. It is actually heartbreaking to watch the last two episodes of Berserk, when you have jumped in to the worlds of these characters...Everything they ever made, everything they achieved becomes nothing, and the high hopes for the future (after difficult times) are crushed in a blink of an eye. Not a happy ending, not in a million years... Every anime friend, you have to watch Berserk. It is deep, dark, violent and philosophical view to all sides of human nature and the motives to actions that lurk beneath. Berserk holds many different world views and personalities, but makes every action and decision understandable from the aspects of each character. Guts's violent nature, Cascas varying actions, Griffiths ascending towards his dream, they all are explained in a realistic way, trough different motives. I can even understand why Griffith chose to become Femto, no matter how heartless and cruel decision it was. Berserk is absolutely magnificent anime, that makes you wonder and question many things, even in real life.
Its a privilege to witness such a great script and not more than rare to be swallowed by a Drama like Berserk. Berserk is violent and very dark. Many people die and War is hell. A mysterious Swordsman seeks revenge on someone. The story that explains why is deeply fundamental. The incredible Soundtrack adds magic to this brutal world. The characters are very dimensional each one, not the least Guts who is raised by the Sword and battle is all he know. One could see a little crusader in him who dreams of another World. A genius and god-like worshiped leader is driven by a Dream. Hes conscience makes him doubt as people dies for it. Heartgripping turn of events all the way trough like a Rollercauster. Unpredictable and chocking. Berserk is something that no one wants to miss.

Berserk tells the story of the first years of the main character (Guts) as a mercenary and his first meeting with the war. Berserk is based on a Japanese comic series (manga) written by Kentaro Miura. It was first published in 1989 and it's still on going. Those who watched the series since the first episode know that something happened after the end of episode 25, since episode 01 works more like a sequel to episode 25. However in the actual Berserk timeline (following the manga series) there's a lot of story which takes place after episode 25 and before episode 01 and they are only shown in the manga series. In the manga, after chapter 102 (the one where the anime ends), the skull knight (character not shown in the anime series) manages to break into the hell dimension to rescue Guts and Caska. Both were rescued from the eclipse chaos and broght back by skull knight to human world. Guts had lost one arm and managed to replace it with a fake iron arm featuring a canon inside of it and Caska got insane after she was raped by Femto, being unable to speak or to do the more simple tasks that a normal adult could do. After their enormous loss and humiliation both are hunted by demons and evil spirits, until Guts decides to hunt down all the demon forces of the world, starting a dark and bloody journey and leaving Caska behind with Godo and his daughter. Griffith turned into one of the five god hand demons and had his name changed to 'Femto' and started a plan with the other god hands to destroy humanity using the demons and corrupting other people from the human world to turn them to demons as well. He is constantly hunted by Guts in the manga. After being rescued from the prison, Griffith started to develop great envy for Caska since she was the new leader the hawks and he was unable to recover the leadership to concrete his dream since he was unable to speak or even use a sword, as he also started to develop a big attraction to her body and enormous guilt when he realized she was way more beautiful and kind to him, as he also had lost the chance to have sex with her, he couldn't try it again since he was permanently weak and Caska was in love with Guts. However this wasn't the main reason for why Griffith raped Caska, as what really motivated him was the fact that Guts left him behind to start a new life, ignoring everything that Griffith gave him including his love. Actually Griffith started to develop more than feelings of friendship towards Guts in the war against the Tudor and probably expected that Guts would feel the same. Yes, in the end of volume 13 it's shown that she not only got pregnant but also gave birth to a premature baby human-demon hybrid. It was probably a mixture of Guts and Caska DNA plus Femto's essence of evil (his semen). The baby looks more like a small vermin-fetus creature, it vanishes at daylight but it can be seen in the darkness (like caves or during the night), and sometimes it appears to protect Caska from danger and to warn Guts about the demons. During the pre-production of the series the original idea was to adapt the entire berserk manga series from start to finish (even though the manga story was still on going), however, there was not enough budget to make an adaptation of the first manga chapters, so the only way was to try to sum it up in only one episode, which wasn't the pilot that the producers where expecting. During the production, there weren't enough manga chapters to make a second season after the first 25 episodes, so the studio decided to create only one season with an ending connecting the beginning of the series. Even with the series having a good success with its 25 episodes some fans where disappointed with adaptation of the first volumes to the pilot. Berserk is published in the USA by Dark Horse Comics, and since the manga has not been completed they keep publishing every semester.
