Hi guys

I have a problem my G(230G) needs a Tranny(711.202) rebuild and It looks like is going to be pretty expensive.

It was always in my mind to upgrade to a 280 engine. Can
I used this tranny on a 280 engine?

I don not want to expend that much money if I'm going to need another tranny down the line.

any sugestions.

thank you so much

JV
The trans from the 230 was not used in the 280 as built by the factory. It will physically bolt to the bell housing, everything will mate up, no problem. But the ratios are a touch different, and in the pictorial section views in the transmisison workshop manuals the trans used in the 230s, (same as that used in diesels, BTW) appears to be smoewhat lighter duty and may not be up to the added torque of the 280. That's just my own observation, and I'm not sure what the torque ratings of the two transmisisons are. Maybe someone here can post who has actual experience using this trans behind an M110 engine in a G.

Hi Dave:

since I'm going to need a new tranny, can I used the one from a 280 on my 230, will it bolt in, do I need to do any modifications and will i need to buy any other parts?

JV

PS sorry to bother you
Per the PM - it will bolt up, but you may need a different length of drive shaft. Now as I think of it, may need shifter rods too. I'll check both trans length and shifter rod length comparison tonight. I don't have a 230 trans to compare any more (someone bought it) but i do still have a set of shifter rods from a 230 that I could compare to mine.

tranny diesel Vs gas

Dave..BTW...when I converted my 230 to 240D, I got a 240D engine with its original tranny...and guess what...they are not exactly similar. They are somewhat similar in ratios, but the gas tranny is stronger..I guess due to the fact the 230 is torquier..at least the 110HP one. I found this the hard way, once I wanted to use some spares from my extra tranny, and couldnt use it....

Thank you guys so much

It' looks like the final money amount to fix my tranny it around 2,000 US dollars, I might still try to rebuild it, but also I'm going to start looking for a 280 one.

I really Thank you all, this is a great forum and a great place for imformation.

Hello!
Here are some opinions after experience:

-Changing to a 280 engine while keeping a 230 tranny is a good idea, no problems showed here, ratios are good and concerning light or heavy duty, the 230 tranny seems heavy duty enough(i know 3 Gwagens that are running 6cylinder with 230 trannys).

-a hint for the gearbox, if u need to change your gearbox, u have the option of buying a Mercedes W123 4 speed gearbox, i used it for years and years, also note that the 3rd gear ratio in the Gwagen is lower, so u'll notice a slight difference climbing steeps. Try to buy a W123 box from europe i think it's cheaper here.

Good luck
Anthony

Hi Anthony

That sounds great, I'm going to keep my tranny, found all the parts for the rebuild.

and then swap the 280 engine with my tranny.
