On Aug. 28, an Al Qaeda militant with a bomb in his rectum tried to assassinate Saudi Arabia's chief of counter-terrorism operations. The bomb apparently was triggered by cellphone. The explosion killed only the militant.

Thanks to Richard Reed and his attempt at blowing up an airliner with bomb-laden shoes, and the resultant requirement of us having to remove our shoes whilst passing through security, I guess we can now expect the rubber-glove-and-full-body-cavity-search the next time we want to fly on a plane . . .

In July 2008, a man at Baltimore Washington International Airport similarly tried to conceal a canister of Mace pepper spray in his body. According to a TSA report of the incident, its officers "did not actually discover the can."
Instead, it "was so uncomfortable that the passenger left the security checkpoint for the nearest restroom. The passenger ran barefoot because his shoes had already been sent through the X-ray when he abandoned the line."
Police confiscated the Mace when the man emerged and he "was allowed to rebook but was later denied boarding when he showed up . . . with a bottle of lighter fluid in hand," the report adds.
"We've seen lots of weird stuff," said Lara Uselding, a TSA spokeswoman. "We've had people hide blocks of cheese in their bags with duct tape and wires attached to it. They're testing us."

Not just jails but prisons as well. The logic is that since people are cramming contraband p their ass to smuggle items in they feel to have you take this degrading position and having you to cough will cause the item(s) to fall out. That would only be true in cases of people who no longer have control of their ass muscles otherwise, it doesn’t work.

Obviously, this made me very distressed, so I told them through tears that I will most certainly die right there from sheer embarrassment. I asked them nicely if this was necessary. Their only response was that such was the process and I have to comply. They clearly got more and more annoyed and I felt like the only way was to comply.
I couldn’t believe it was happening. It felt like I was imprisoned in some third-world country – not in what I perceived to be the center of civilization. It was chilly (felt no higher than 60 degrees F) and I was tired and had mild fever since I’ve caught a cold the day before – I mentioned it too, but they dismissed it as if I was an annoyance and had no right to say or feel anything. They were not rude or anything, but their behavior was beyond indifferent. I felt like an object and it made it twice as hard on me.
First, they instructed me to take off my jewelry and clothes, piece by piece, as they examined them. When they told me to remove bra and underwear, I started crying, telling them that’s enough, feeling beyond embarrassed. It was obvious at this point there was nothing on me – the thought that I casually drive from work with weapons or drugs “down there” was beyond ridiculous. Still, they had none of it – they coldly ordered once again to remove everything. Even the stockings and glasses for some reason, what could be concealed there and how? It made me feel like I was in a blurry, bleak nightmare. After I was done, they asked me to step back to the wall facing them and just “stand still with arms down your sides” as another officer started going through my clothes again – one more time, turning every item inside out. Slowly and meticulously. For fifteen minutes or so, maybe less in reality, but it seemed like forever. I told them it was freezing cold – they ignored me. One of them could have searched me during that time but they didn’t bother, leaving me to stand there naked and vulnerable, not even able to clearly see. There was absolutely no need for it to be done like this. I’ve had a strong feeling that it was them teaching me a lesson to always obey.
Then they asked me to comb through my hair, open my mouth, show behind my ears, move my arms around, turn around a few times, lift my breasts. There was not much to lift, but I had to pretend until they were satisfied. “Wiggle your toes” thing (my toes are not wiggly so I failed miserably). Then it came. “Bend over. Spread buttocks. Cough. Split vaginal lips. Wider. Cough. Cough more.” I felt humiliated, violated and close to the point of physically vomiting.
Finally, they asked me to shower. The shower was not so warm either.
Afterwards. they gave me my glasses back, got me dressed into short sleeved overalls (no underwear) and put me into an unremarkable solitary cell where I had a not-so-delicious dinner and a not-so-good sleep until new day has come, at which point I eventually regained my freedom.
I can’t say it traumatized me for life. I still remember it though and these memories make me extremely uncomfortable. I feel like there must be other less invasive ways to check for contraband – that do not involve making a young woman who is unwell standing exposed and shivering in front of two strangers while her belongings are turned inside out time and time again

Yes, this is true. I will attempt to tell you the process that she will go through. After being in holding for a while and getting booked in, processed, etc, she, along with a group of other girls, will be taken upstairs to the showers. They will all have to line up and remove their clothing, hair clips, shoes, etc. They will be told, not necessarily in this order, to bend at the waist and with their head down, to run their fingers through their hair and shake it out. They do not touch them and it goes really fast. Then they will lift one foot and wiggle their toes, lift the other foot and wiggle. Finally, she will be issued a towel, bar of soap and a comb, provided it's available, and a jumpsuit to dress in. If that's what they wear where she is going. From there, she's taken to her cell and put into general population.
As a mother, I could only imagine the fear you must be going through for your daughter. We love our children no matter what and have loved and cared for them and have kept them safe. It's out of your hands now and you can no longer protect her. It has to hurt and make you feel helpless. One of two things is going to happen to her: She will either learn from it and not want to go back there so bad, that she straightens up, or, it just pisses her off and she falls into a downward spiral, eventually being a well-known resident at the detention center. Lets hope it's not the latter. I'm just assuming she's guilty of some wrong-doings. Please forgive me if I am wrong for doing so. She is 23 Mom. If she is old enough and has enough street smarts to be out there kicking up dust, she's old enough to handle herself in jail. You see your little baby when you look at her. She's a big girl and will be able to handle the consequences that she paying. She's probably totally different when she's out there doing whatever she does, than she is around you. I speak from my own personal experience when I say that. I mean no disrespect to you or your daughter. Shes doing a short run. My advice to her is keep to herself, do her time and go home. Learn the rules but don't get wrapped up and don't do anything that will cause her to catch another case. Be respectful and mind her own business! My advice to you is to get some rest. Sleep, which I'm sure you haven't done in a while. Find comfort in the fact that you know where she is and she is being supervised. Write letters to her, answer her phone calls and keep money on her books. These three are very important for them and helps their time go faster. I wish you peace and pray for your daughter to turn a new leaf upon her release.

Having NO experience working around female inmates/detainees, I can only speak from the experience I’ve obtained over the past 20 years in corrections.
Yes your girlfriend will have to get undressed, but the rule for most jails/prisons is that Unclothed Body Searches be done in as private a setting as possible to allow the “searchee” to retain some level of dignity.
She will stand in front of the officer, and directed to remove her shoes, socks, and other outer clothing. These will be searched by the officer, and from there she will be directed to remove her bra and panties.

From here the process, with the exception of a couple of things is pretty cut and dried for both genders.
Raise your hand/arms over your head, extend your arms out in front, fingers splayed palms down, turn hands palms up, lean forward run hands through hair, turn head side to side exposing the areas behind ears, stand up, look towards ceiling (this is to insure that there’s nothing lodged in nostrils), look at officer, open mouth lift tongue, run finger in circular manner to show that there’s nothing lodged between cheek/lips and gums, and lift breasts (California houses MTF transgender inmates in male facilities regardless of how feminine they appear on the outside, until they complete reassignment surgery, and their male genitals are removed).
From here things get different simply because of anatomy. Male and Trans inmates are required to skin back their foreskin, and lift their scrotum, while females are required to spread their labia.
