I might just include this in my stretching and warm up routines. I love all of the benefits that you have listed, most especially the relieving of back pain part. I want to get a happy back!
I think we all need to work towards a happy back!
I love a bit of happy baby! It’s so calming and restful for me and I love how it opens up my hips (where I accumulate a lot of stress) x
I have never tried this pose before but I am going to incorporate it in my Yoga sessions. Doing jumping jack with my daughter makes me feel childlike and happy!
I don’t have a lot of experience in yoga, just starting to learn about it this year. That being said, I have never heard of the happy baby pose before now. However, given all the benefits, I think I need to make this a priority during my yoga time!
These poses have so many benefits that I never realised. Looks like they not too hard to do either.
Nope, happy baby is a beginner pose
Hey you are a pet lover so just get down on the floor and do happy baby, trust me dogs and cats love it and end up crawling all over you!
I am yet to try this pose yet during my yoga practices, but I can honestly tell by just looking at you that it would greatly ease my back pain, so I’ll definitely have to note it down!
Happy baby is indeed one of my favorite poses – it does feel so good! Glad to know it has these benefits, too!
Well, to me it looks like the “In trouble Turtle” pose cause if you see me in that position I may very well be stuck! But I have to say, I have been showing my wife your poses and info cause she has been complaining about lower back problems and she carries her stress in her back and hips so this may be perfect for her! Thanks!
Hahaha I love the “in trouble turtle!” pose! Stealing that for kids yoga! I’ve often heard it called “dead bug” too!
Hahaha! its really different when adults do them but its seems fun to do, really.
True, I would often giggle when I looked out to a sea of people in the studio doing happy baby!

As my infant daughter giggled away while lying flat on her back, she swung her feet up in the air and grabbed the outside edges of her feet as her knees bent in toward her shoulders. I finally understood why Happy Baby was so aptly named.
Sure, babies are fascinated by their feet and quite flexible, so they’d most certainly do it, but what dawned on me was the sheer amount of joy and carefree energy exuding from her little four-month-old body.
Known as Ananda Balasana in Sanskrit (and by Dead Bug Pose to some people), the pose embodies its name — like a young baby with nothing to worry about in the world. It’s no wonder Happy Baby Pose makes its way into many a yoga sequence!
Here are just some of the many holistic benefits of Happy Baby Pose:
Physically, this posture is a major hip opener. It stretches the inner thighs and groin as well as the back of the legs, or the hamstrings. It releases the spine and sacrum, and is particularly beneficial in releasing, or decompressing, the SI (sacroiliac) joint.
It is an accessible posture for new yogis (with the help of your trusty yoga strap!) to work on building strength in the hips, legs, thighs, and arms, while opening up and building flexibility in the hips. Internally, it can also massage the stomach organs and stimulate the digestive system.
Spiritually, Ananda Balasana is said to stimulate the bladder and kidney meridians. It also opens the liver meridians due to the stretch of the inner thighs. It opens and balances the sacral chakra, Svadisthana.
Svadisthana is home to your sense of belonging. The sacral chakra is the center of sensuality, pleasure, passion, intimacy and sexuality. It is our relationship center — from friends to family to romantic relationships. When your Svadisthana is balanced and open, you feel accepted (by yourself and those around you) and know exactly where you belong. You open yourself up to the world and what life has to offer you with a quiet confidence that comes from a secure, grounded intuition.
You’ve probably heard your teacher say that stress, or emotions, are stored deep in the tissues of your hips. Happy Baby can help open your hips, which are linked directly to your sacral chakra, and release deeply stored emotions and memories. So if you’re feeling a little dependent, emotionally imbalanced, overly sexual (or too driven by sexual desire), or closed off to the world, practicing Happy Baby (and other Yin hip openers) can help get your sacral chakra back in check.
Mentally, Happy Baby Pose awakens your inner child and is an instant mood booster! It melts away nervous energy, relieves stress, and transforms your busy mind to that of a young, carefree infant. It zaps tension and reinvigorates your mind, body, and soul.
It’s an encouraging posture and easily accessible to many yogis (with or without the help of a strap) that can build confidence and self-love. It’s like you’re giving yourself a big hug and dose of much needed anxiety relief. Since it can be, and often is, held for longer periods of time, it’s a great pose to meditate on a mantra or affirmation.
Happy Baby Pose comes with some amazing benefits for your mind, body, and soul. By connecting with and freeing your inner child, you open yourself to receive the creative, imaginative, and child-like energy that flows through your being. You leave your busy, discerning, and knowing adult perspective aside for a few moments of innocent, pure, and unknowing fascination with the world around you.

We at CNY Healing Arts invite you to try out our version of Happy Baby Pose, also known as Dead Bug Pose. When performed correctly, this posture can provide significant relief to lower back pain or discomfort. The best part about it: as you lie there, this supine stretch works out kinks in your hips, back, and buttocks.
Precautions should be taken when doing Happy Baby or Dead Bug, especially if you suffer from a prior knee or neck injury. A prop, such as a folded blanket, may be used to support the neck while in this pose. Furthermore, a woman should not perform Ananda Balasana while pregnant, unless a skilled yoga practitioner modifies the pose for her separately.
Begin by laying flat on your back. Exhale and bend the knees into the belly. Inhale and grip the outside of each foot with the corresponding hand. If you are performing Dead Bug Pose, hold on to the inside of each foot instead. If you find it difficult to grip your feet, try looping a belt or yoga strap over each sole and holding on to the ends of it. Open your knees slightly wider than your torso and bring them up towards your armpits. If you are performing Dead Bug Pose, your
Stack each ankle directly over the knee so that the shins are perpendicular to the floor. With gentle movements, push your feet up into your hands and pull down with your hands to create resistance. Flex your feet. Lengthen your spine as you bring your thighs into your torso and towards the floor.
Hold this posture for 30 seconds to a minute. Exhale and release the feet back to the floor. Rest for a few breaths before moving on.
