I founded Drupal4Gov back in the ancient past of 2009 to empower Government employees. We are currently planning our 10th Drupal GovCon for 2020.
Drupal GovCon is a free event that is open to all and that everyone should attend! EVERYONE!
We also hold events in DC and webinars that anyone can attend. We shape most of our work around Drupal but do look to open Government to the use and contribution to open source development in general.
Kirsten and the Drupal4Gov board have begun the process of creating a non-profit for Drupal4Gov. She currently serves as the Executive Director and the team is in the planning process for upcoming Drupal Global Training days as well as webinars and other half day events to teach, mentor and encourage Drupal adoption in non profits and all government levels.
Kirsten has been drupaling since 2008 starting out on D5 with UnionReview. Kirsten is a trade unionist and 2nd generation Finnish-American. Kirsten currently works for the US Department of State, is a single mom (who raised an amazing daughter and UMD graduate) and community organizer. Kirsten resides in Maryland.

It was Will Rogers who said that. He said it to Al Smith in 1929. Think yesterday was bad, Al Smith lost his home state of New York, a state he was governor. Who'd he lose to? Herbert Hoover and it was a landslide. 444 electoral votes and 58+% of the eligible voters. And there were nearly super majorities in Congress. Democrats at that point were nearly rubber stamping things because they didn't have the numbers to actually be an opposing party in Washington.
This is why Will Rogers gives me hope.
I was a tour guide for the US Capitol Building. This was when I first fell in love with Will Rogers. Reading his quotes today, I find solace.
I don't think I've ever met someone I didn't like in person. There are people I've grown to dislike, but when I meet most people not only do I give them a chance, I find myself looking for reasons to like them.
And yesterday, I really needed that perspective.
I follow Mike Debonis and he retweeted something from, well, is that really important? The tweet is probably more important.
Reminder: In 1995, Congress voice voted and a President Clinton signed PL 104-69 which provided funds in shutdown for DC and vets.
Public Law 104-69, but no link? Why no link, so I looked and found a link on Government Printing Office's site .

I'm a card carrying member of a union. It's the 3rd I've been a member of now. I've provided strike support to 2 others.
I am the product of Finnish Trade Unionism. The union is how my family found employment when they first arrived in Upstate New York. My Great Grandfather, Albert (no, that wasn't his name, but he assimilated) arrived by 1917, Having been drafted into the US Army in 1918. Those papers helped him to bring my great grandmother and the kids over.
My great grandmother was pregnant at the time that my great grandfather left for the US, my grandfather was the last born in Finland. Two more girls would follow once the family was in the states and all settled here sometime before the 1930 Census.
So, what's with the family history? Follow me below the orange squiggle...
Im on a bus to NYC so, this will be quick.
Occupy Youngstown has been evicted, but people are determine to stay.
There were four Occupy Youngstown members at the location when police and fire arrived around 7:30 a.m. today, said Luke Walker, who was among the four.
An officer gave the group a five-minute warning that the items would be confiscated, Walker said.
The occupiers received a hand delivered letter on Thursday from Youngstown chief of police:
If you can, let them know you're watching, that we're all pulling for them on their Facebook page. #OccupyYoungstown Facebook

I've been participating in OccupyDC for a few weeks now. I've camped, marched, attended rallies, donated food and change, and no, the woman in the wingnut video is NOT using her kids as a human shield.
So, yeah, I participate when and where I can.
A good friend from high school moved home from LA and he's fed up with the way things are going in rural Ohio. He's fed up with double digit unemployment , that only gets worse in December, January and February (we're rural, farming isn't really taking place at these times). And he met other fed up people, which is not hard to do at all in Ashtabula.
So, Rod and the "others" decided, they had had enough.
Since I'm in DC, the office was all a buzz about it this morning.
Apparently, someone was taken into custody with a back pack full of explosives .
It’s been a long week for me, probably even longer for my daughter. But last night, I breathed a sigh of relief as she arrived in Istanbul.
For the previous diaries on the saga of being a worried mother of a 17 year old exchange student in Egypt , you might want to read the previous diaries .
**UPDATE**
Just heard that she will be home at 6pm on Friday. I wish she had a full year, but right now, I just want to hug my baby girl.
Yesterday, I posted about my daughter's evacuation. Today, she's awaiting a flight out. We don't know where the flight is going (directly to the states or an interim location first), all I know so far is that she still doesn't want to go. That her host parents went shopping today so that my daughter can bring something to her daughter.
***UPDATE***
She's heading to Europe. Just got a call from AFS, but no idea where or when, but the Warden message appears to be accurate. She and other Americans are being evacuated to Europe.
**UPDATE 2**
It's Cyprus, Athens or Istanbul now. No idea of when or which or how she'll get home from there, but tomorrow she is scheduled to leave.
If you haven't been following my daughter's saga, you can read a little here , or in some of my comments on the Egypt Diaries.
My daughter is 17 and is an exchange student in Cairo. She's on the NSLI-Y program , administered by AFS. She has been there for 5 months and had another 5 to go. Leaving now, feels like unfinished business to her. And despite the tanks and armed neighbors ready to defend their property with sticks and bottles, she actually feels safe.
***UPDATE***
Thanks for the well wishes. I will update the diary as I learn more. But I do want to thank you all for your well wishes and thoughts. Having this community these past few days has made my life less tearful and frustrating. Thank you all. I feel truly blessed.
It's been a rough couple of days for me, mom.
My 17 year old daughter is in Egypt, studying Arabic.
I've been so proud of her and her desire to not only learn a new language (she also speaks and writes Japanese), but to do it in a foreign country. The concept of her really immersing herself in culture and language in a country where women are 2nd class citizens, it really just makes me in awe of her. Now, I just sort of want her home...

This isn't a PROTEST, it's a highjacking. You want to help Crell or CHX, then help them, say something, do something, but DO NOT TEAR DOWN ANYONE TO DO IT.
Those presenters at Drupalcon are our friends, coworkers, community members, they don't deserve this kind of highjacking of their work. It's totally acceptable to ask for more info, or make a statement during Q&A with Dries or Megan but IT IS NOT OK to demean, bully or thwart the hard work that our community does when they pull together and then deliver their presentations.
Call on Dries, the CWG or Megan, yes, everywhere you find them, say something, do something, but do not tear down other community members. It's a disservice to all of us.
I'm going to Drupalcon and I'm cheering on every speaker with the guts, brains and talent to be on those stages. I'm celebrating their success and that of this community because in the end, the community isn't Dries and it isn't Larry, it's people like you and me. We are STRONGER TOGETHER, The Community Makes Us Strong, I came for the code and I'm fucking staying for this community.
I love the approaches of the USA's CIO Playbook & GDS Principles: https://www.gov.uk/design-principles https://playbook.cio.gov/
NYC is also experimenting with a similar playbook idea: https://playbook.cityofnewyork.us/
The GDS in the UK states it really clearly: "Much of what we’re doing is only possible because of open source code and the generosity of the web design community. We should pay that back."
People are the true value of open source, it's the community which drives innovation in the software: https://opensource.com/life/14/5/true-value-of-open-source
You could take out the technology elements in Drupal's mission statement and apply that to a range of other organizations that care about working with a community of people doing almost anything: https://www.drupal.org/about/mission-and-principles
Open source is really a child of open standards. There are great initiatives around open government and open data, but without the success of the open-source community demonstrating that a decentralized merit based approach is possible I don't think we would be talking about them today.
Does it change your opinion knowing that GDS is being sidelined with the latest turnover of gov't in the UK?
How about a top 10 list of best practices for building in accessibility for cognitive and learning issues? I often forget these items when I focus in on hearing and sight.
