Miriam Weeks, known by her stageā name of Belle Knox,[1][4][5] is an AmerĀiĀcan forĀmer pornoĀgraphicā filmā acĀtress. She is known for perĀformĀing in pornogĀraĀphy while studyĀing at Dukeā UniĀverĀsity.[6][7][8]
Knox started doing pornogĀraĀphy in 2013 to help pay for her $60,000 per year tuĀition costs. In late 2013, her caĀreer beĀcame pubĀlicly known on camĀpus, and she faced exĀtenĀsive in-perĀson and onĀline haĀrassĀment. Knox took a colĀlege-sancĀtioned break from Duke UniĀverĀsity in early 2014[9] and later reĀturned to conĀtinue her studies.[10]
SubĀseĀquently, Knox has deĀfended her deĀciĀsion to do the work pubĀlicly, as well as exĀplainĀing her views of femĀiĀnism and rights for sex workers.[6][7][11] She beĀlieves her exĀpeĀriĀences are inĀdicaĀtive of the risĀing costs of higherā edĀuĀcaĀtionā inā theā Unitedā States.[12]
Knox has won a 2014 Fannyā Award and a 2015 XBIZā Award.
Knox deĀcided to enter the pornogĀraĀphy inĀdusĀtry beĀcause she enĀjoyed sex and pornogĀraĀphy, and the job ofĀfered much betĀter comĀpenĀsaĀtion and workĀing hours. In preĀviĀous work as a waitĀress, Knox had enĀdured a boss who treated her poorly and a schedĀule that inĀterĀfered with her studĀies, for less than $400 a month (after taxes).[13][14] PornogĀraĀphy would allow her to conĀtrol her schedĀule, and she could make about $1,300 per scene.[15] Knox had preĀviĀously tried to apply for govĀernĀment loans, but was told that she was inĀelĀiĀgiĀble; and beĀlieved priĀvate stuĀdent loans would "strap her famĀily with debt."[13]
She began workĀing in pornogĀraĀphy in NoĀvemĀber 2013, flyĀing out to Los AnĀgeĀles while on school breaks to perĀform in the films.[12] Knox chose the name "Belle", inĀspired by Belle from Beautyā andā theā Beast and the charĀacĀter of Belle from SeĀcretā Diaryā ofā aā Callā Girl; the name "Knox" is after Amandaā Knox, exĀonĀerĀated in the murĀderā ofā MeredĀithā Kercher.[15] In early 2015 Knox deĀclined to comĀment on whether she was still filmĀing adult movies.[11]
Weeks is a ColĀlegeā ReĀpubĀliĀcan and conĀsidĀers herĀself a sex-posĀiĀtiveā femĀiĀnist and libĀerĀtarĀian.[16] She idenĀtiĀfies her "faĀvorite figĀures in libĀerty" as Aynā Rand, econĀoĀmist MilĀtonā FriedĀman, and two other acĀtivists whose caĀreers have inĀcluded both sex and polĀiĀtics: porn acĀtress Ninaā HartĀley and forĀmer call girl MagĀgie McNeill.[11] She has also shown adĀmiĀraĀtion for both forĀmer RepĀreĀsenĀtaĀtive Ronā Paul and his son SenĀaĀtor Randā Paul.[17][18]
She is inĀvolved in the orĀgaĀniĀzaĀtion StuĀdentsā forā LibĀerty, an orĀgaĀniĀzaĀtion that bills itĀself as "the largest libĀerĀtarĀian stuĀdent orĀgaĀniĀzaĀtion in the world", and is the camĀpus coĀorĀdiĀnaĀtor for StuĀdents for LibĀerty at Duke.[11] In adĀdiĀtion to her work with StuĀdents for LibĀerty, Weeks said she was reĀcently apĀpointed to the naĀtional board of diĀrecĀtors for the Sexā WorkĀersā OutĀreachā ProĀject. Knox has been asked to speak in Duke classes about being a sex worker,[19] and has given speeches at other colĀleges beĀsides her alma mater.
While her work in porn helped fuel her poĀlitĀiĀcal beĀliefs, Weeks says she began deĀvelĀopĀing her ideĀolĀogy earĀlier in life. "I grew up Catholic, so I grew up in a very, very, conĀserĀvĀaĀtive backĀground and that, I think, reĀally was kind of the imĀpeĀtus for why I wanted to beĀcome a libĀerĀtarĀian. I was alĀways being told to cover up my body and I was alĀways being told to wait until marĀriage to have sex, that my body would go down if I didn't wait till marĀriage to have sex," Weeks exĀplained, adding, "That reĀally made me beĀcome a libĀerĀtarĀian and beĀcome a feminist."[11]
On JanĀuĀary 10, 2014, felĀlow Duke stuĀdent Thomas Bagley reĀvealed Knox's caĀreer to his fraĀterĀnity brothĀers. AcĀcounts of how Bagley deĀduced Knox's idenĀtity vary: Bagley claims that Knox reĀvealed her work to him as a seĀcret, whereas Knox claims that Bagley recĀogĀnized her from watchĀing porn in which she starred. The news quickly spread through the community.[16][20]
After reĀturnĀing to camĀpus from winĀterā break, Knox disĀcovĀered that her perĀsonal FaceĀbook acĀcount had reĀceived more than 230 friend reĀquests. FelĀlow stuĀdents started folĀlowĀing her porn perĀsona's TwitĀter acĀcount, at which point she reĀalĀized that her porn caĀreer had been disĀcovĀered. Shortly thereĀafter posts began to emerge on the anonyĀmous colĀlege disĀcusĀsion board ColĀleĀgiateACB under the thread title "FreshĀman PornĀstar." Knox began to reĀceive threats of viĀoĀlence and death in perĀson and via soĀcial media sites such as TwitĀter and Facebook.[21] Some posters enĀdorsed raping[2] and beatĀing her;[22] othĀers simĀply wanted Duke to expel Knox.
Knox beĀlieves that the pubĀlic reĀsponse exĀhibĀited a douĀble stanĀdard sexā workĀers face from those who seek their services.[23] In FebĀruĀary 2014 Knox gave an inĀterĀview to the camĀpus newsĀpaĀper, Theā ChronĀiĀcle, in which she used the pseuĀdoĀnym "LauĀren A.," and reĀferred to her stage name as "AuĀrora" to avoid idenĀtiĀfyĀing herĀself. She exĀpressed frusĀtraĀtion over her treatĀment statĀing, "I feel like girls at Duke have to hide their sexĀuĀalĀity. We're caught in this virĀgin-whoreā diĀchotomy."[16] Knox pubĀlished a simĀiĀlar deĀfense on lifestyle webĀsite xoĀJane, but the storm of haĀrassĀment conĀtinĀued. Knox's idenĀtity, conĀtact inĀforĀmaĀtion, and loĀcaĀtion were posted, but when Knox conĀtacted the poĀlice over the onĀgoĀing threats, the poĀlice failed to reĀspect her concerns.[23]
On March 4, 2014, Knox deĀcided to emĀbrace her new reĀalĀity: she wrote a secĀond post where she reĀvealed her stageā name, and reĀflected on her exĀpeĀriĀences. She would later sumĀmaĀrize her reaĀsonĀing as: "I think the [sex-work] inĀdusĀtry needs a femĀiĀnist adĀvoĀcate as well."[12][23]
Media outĀlets covĀerĀing the story uniĀformly deĀscribed the pubĀlic reĀsponse as slut-shamĀing. The PoynĀterā InĀstiĀtute's Kellyā McBride comĀmented on the reĀcepĀtion for Knox's story, statĀing that it "[preĀsented] a lesĀson in crowd beĀhavĀior," notĀing that, "While her critĀics were loud and deĀstrucĀtive, adĀvoĀcatĀing that peoĀple call her dad to let him know his daughĀter is a porn star, no one sugĀgested a phone camĀpaign to inĀform the mother of the frat boy who outed her that her son is watchĀing porn."[24] AcĀcordĀing to critic and forĀmer sex worker Eric Barry, "It's imĀposĀsiĀble to sepĀaĀrate those tryĀing to viĀoĀlate sex workĀers' right to priĀvacy, from those who beĀlieve sex workĀers someĀhow deĀserve to be devalued."[2] ElizĀaĀbeth Stoker, in Theā Week, noted the "repĀreĀhenĀsiĀble and perĀsonal" comĀments of threats and haĀrassĀment through soĀcialā media were "odiĀous and inĀexĀcusĀable," and charĀacĀterĀized them as unĀjusĀtiĀfiĀable, as well as being "disĀproĀporĀtionĀately aimed at women in the pubĀlic sphere."[25]
At the same time, not all comĀmenĀtaĀtors agreed with Knox on how to inĀterĀpret her deĀciĀsions. Stoker found Knox's poĀlitĀiĀcal agenda unĀcomĀpelling, beĀcause it emĀphaĀsizes perĀsonal freeĀdom over qualĀity of life. The sexā inĀdusĀtry does not have a tradeā union, and marĀketĀing toĀwards male sexĀual deĀsire inĀcenĀtivizes unĀsafe pracĀtices in the industry.[25] John RoĀgove beĀlieves that the sex inĀdusĀtry acĀtuĀally reĀduces freeĀdom, by transĀformĀing its acĀtors from peoĀple into commodities.[26] Eliana DockĀterĀman, writĀing for TIME, doubted that Knox could truly find her pornogĀraĀphy caĀreer emĀpowĀerĀing. AcĀcordĀing to DockĀterĀman, Knox "doesn't know how to process her newĀfound fame" and her deĀciĀsion "will likely haunt [her] for the rest of her colĀlege and proĀfesĀsional career."[27]
A repĀreĀsenĀtaĀtive for Duke UniĀverĀsity isĀsued a stateĀment sayĀing that while they would not comĀment on speĀcific cases, the colĀlege's comĀmuĀnity stanĀdard did not have any reĀstricĀtions conĀcernĀing off-camĀpus employment.[28] Of Knox's alĀleĀgaĀtions that camĀpus poĀlice did not take the threats against her seĀriĀously enough, the repĀreĀsenĀtaĀtive reĀmarked, "We are comĀmitĀted to proĀtectĀing the priĀvacy, safety and seĀcuĀrity of our stuĀdents. WhenĀever we idenĀtify a stuĀdent in need of supĀport, we reach out to them and offer the many reĀsources that we have availĀable on camĀpus to asĀsist them."[28]
In May 2014, Knox anĀnounced that she would be hostĀing an onĀline show called Theā Sexā FacĀtor along with four other porn performers,[29] where they would overĀsee 16 conĀtesĀtants that would comĀpete for the right to parĀticĀiĀpate in a sex scene with Knox.[30] In FebĀruĀary 2015, Asaā Akira reĀplaced Knox as the show's host.[citationā needed]
A ficĀtionĀalĀized verĀsion of Knox's story was feaĀtured in "PornĀstar'sā ReĀquiem," an episode of Lawā &ā Order:ā SpeĀcialā VicĀtimsā Unit.[31][32] Knox has also been the focus of the five-part docĀuĀmenĀtary seĀries BeĀcomĀing Belle Knox, which was proĀduced and reĀleased by StateĀless Media and Condeā Nastā EnĀterĀtainĀment.[33][34] In 2015, she narĀrated on a one-hour episode of "One Bad Choice" on MTV, also showĀing a draĀmaĀtized verĀsion of her life.[citationā needed] A TV docuĀdĀrama based on her life tiĀtled From Straight A's to XXX preĀmiered on the LifeĀtime netĀwork in FebĀruĀary 2017.[35]
