Mohammed Amri tells French court he had no advance knowledge of the November 2015 terrorist attacks
A Belgian man accused of helping Salah Abdeslam escape Paris after the November 2015 terrorist attacks has told a court he was not involved in the bombings and shootings and had no knowledge of them in advance.
Mohammed Amri said that Abdeslam’s older brother Brahim, who was a friend in Molenbeek , Belgium, had asked to borrow his car to go to Germany days before the attacks.
Amri, who had worked at Brahim Abdeslam’s bar Les Béguines in Molenbeek for three months, said he refused even though Abdeslam was insistent. Instead, he agreed to accompany Brahim Abdeslam to hire a car – the Belgian-registered Seat Leon was later identified by police as that used by one group of terrorists to drive around the French capital shooting at cafes and restaurants on the night of 13 November, killing 39 people.
Amri said Brahim had paid for the rented vehicle in cash and he was surprised when he parked it some way from the Abdeslam home. “He said he didn’t want people to see him with such a nice car,” Amri said.
“A Seat Leon … it’s not that nice a car,” the lead judge, Jean-Louis Périès, remarked.
Amri said Brahim Abdeslam had told him he was taking his family to Germany for a few days and he thought no more of it. “I had no idea the car was going to be used in the attacks. I learned later … I have nothing to do [with] this,” Amri said.
Quizzed by the attorney general, Nicolas Le Bris, about different statements he had made to investigators, Amri said he was in a state of shock after the attacks. “It was complicated,” he said.
On Thursday afternoon, the judges heard a request from lawyers representing the families of victims for photographs and audio tape of the attack on the Bataclan music venue be shown to the court.
The previous day, the victims and their families had packed the courtroom at the Palais de Justice in Paris to hear Salah Abdeslam, 32, explain what happened in the run-up to the attacks and on the night of 13 November 2015. Instead the accused invoked his right to silence.
Afterwards, Philippe Duperron, the president of a victims’ association and father of one of those killed at the Bataclan, accused Abdeslam of “mocking us”.
“I think he is showing off … we are in his hands and he was teasing us a few days before by talking then suddenly, he changes his mind,” he told FranceTV. “If we allow him to play this game we make ourselves victims all over again.”
The 2015 attacks killed 130 people and injured 350 others.

@moylato @tunkuv Where was this man when the ship was stuck in the Suez Canal?
@moylato I stuck out through the whole video just to see how he opens the door and it was worth it
@moylato Fascinating. This brings a whole new meaning to the term “space and time”. I like his defiant tone and the beauty of his dialect.
Best video I’ve seen this year... https://t.co/GO8j5RdQet
Howling ecstatically through this whole thing. https://t.co/zDJnbM65Sj

We’re told reaction times and spatial awareness start to deteriorate when you hit old age.
But a man from Belgium proved he still had awe-inspiring manoeuvring skills at the age of 87.
Eugene Breynaert spent six decades parking his 1.49 metre-wide red Fiat Panda into his 1.55 metre-wide garage.
That meant he had just 3cm wiggle-room on each side to get his vehicle in without damaging it.
The pensioner became a national star after appearing on the light-hearted Dutch news show Man bijt hond ( Man bites dog ) in 2010 to discuss his technique.
His exit method was a particular highlight – making him an instant icon throughout the Flanders region.
But now he has come to the attention of admirers across the world after users on Twitter and Reddit posted a video of Breynaert at work.
The clip has now been watched more than 1.4 million times on Twitter alone, racking up more than 31,000 likes, with users sharing their awe at the 87-year-old’s unique talent.
Here are some of the best reactions:
Alas, Breynaert is no longer around to soak up the acclaim. He died in 2016, aged 93, HLN reports.
Still, he probably wouldn’t be too happy about all the attention, the news site points out.
Following the Man bijt hond sketch, and his new-found fame, he told an interview with De Standaard in 2010: "I want it to end.”
Despite the distractions, he continued to drive – and park – his trusty red sidekick till the end of his days.

Three years in the making, the composition of Owen Payette McGarry’s The Heavy Burden of Existentialism has spanned three continents and five countries. In this piece, the four channels of the Nintendo gameboy dance and drone contemplatively to invoke bleak, nuanced landscapes evocative of the dynamism and malignant nature of South Pacific surrounding the composer on the cover. Within the somber waves of each piece are clandestine suggestions of classical beauty, presented fleetingly to beguile the supplicant listener. This ephemeral human quality ultimately culminates in the piece titled The Barrens with the addition of vocals performed Katie Greenwood Ross. However, even during these most unguarded and comparatively venerable moments, the humanity is buried, burdened and muddy, struggling to stay at the surface of the cold consuming torrent of two-bit force and as we listen, common sense tells us that our existence is but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darkness.

Valentine’s day is not a big deal, the bread needs to be fresh and lots of kissing… with relatives. These and more are the things to deal with when falling in love with a Belgian man.
A relationship with a Belgian guy needs to be quite settled before you meet his parents. But even though it takes a long time before you meet the (future) in-laws, you will need to kiss them many times when you do. Like 3 times on the cheeks when you first arrive and again when you leave. That’s 6 times for one parent, 12 for 2, and then add siblings, grannies, aunties, cousins etc.
But the meeting itself is informal, cosy and not a big deal.
Prepare to have many of your Sundays dedicated to looooong three-course lunches/dinners with bubbly and appetizers … and your in-laws.

Okay, so a Belgian man is rather introvert, humble and prefers to brush off problems rather than talk openly about them. And he really doesn’t want to upset anyone, hurt your feelings or make a scene. So instead of talking and reacting, a Belgian guy will go silent before he yells.
Valentine’s Day in Belgium is considered something imported, so it tends to be ignored rather than celebrated. So ladies, do not expect lavish dinners and big chocolate boxes. However, you can expect something on the 6th of December when Sint Niklaas (St. Nicholas) comes to town with his little black helper Zwarte Piet.
No lavish dinners for Valentine’s, and also no bling bling big diamond rings for engagements and weddings. Belgians prefer the hands of their fiancées and wives to have a low profile.
This is despite the fact that nearby Antwerp is considered the diamond capital of the world. Curious to know why? It has a long history of export and import of diamonds, and the Diamond Office checking the quality of diamonds before shipping them further. You can read more about the diamond history of Antwerp here .
I will never forget my boyfriend’s face when I brought home a bag of industrial sliced toast. It was a mixture of surprise and disgust. And I learned quickly that the only right place to get bread is from the local bakery. And koffie koekjes and croissants are a must for a lazy weekend brunch. Which is something you can easily get used to …
But dating a Belgian guy is not all hard work and no play. Besides sweet brunches that they spoil us with, they have other redeeming qualities too:
Just look at Matthias Schoenaerts reaching international acclaim after acting in Bullhead ( IMDB link ). And didn’t Jean Claude Van Damme take over the action world with: “being 6 foot tall and full of muscles”?
While the average Belgian men we are dating might not be Matthias or Jean Claude, they do tend to be tall, sporty, fair and easy on the eye.
Not only do they look good, they are also nice and smart too! And super polite. They are very social and can small talk anyone under the table, because they are always up to date with current affairs, culture, religion, history etc. etc. They are also curious about the world, and their fluency in many languages makes it easy for them to travel (and you to travel with them if languages are not your thing).
This list was possible thanks to the input from the Ghent Expat Ladies Friendship Group on Facebook. Do you have more experiences about dating a Belgian? Please share!

Thank you for your message. The Square.Gent is about helping people integrate when moving to Ghent from abroad, not so much about solving love life queries. This article was written to give a brief understanding about the culture here. In my own personal opinion you are both adults and should do what you want.
