It may not come as a big surprise, but not many people thought she was wrong for not letting her mother see her children.
Religion is always going to be a tricky subject, especially when members of one family have different views. It can become a full-blown war if someone tries to force their views on other people, it can tear a family apart. That is exactly what happened to one mom who posted her story to Reddit’s “Am I The A—hole?” page. It went so bad that mom had to tell her mother that she could no longer see her grandchildren , and mom wanted to know if that was too harsh.
She starts the post by providing some background information. She states that she grew up in a very religious home. They went to church multiple times a week, and she had always questioned what they were being taught and had decided when she was older that she was agnostic. She explains that she lives in the “bible belt” of the US, so it has been a challenge for her.
She says that as for her family, everyone but her mother has respected her beliefs and her choice. Her husband is atheist, and they are not raising their two daughters as anything. Their daughters are 8 and 9 years old, and their grandmother was taking them to church with her until recently. Mom decided to tell her mom that she did not want her girls going to church anymore. Grandma did argue a bit, but eventually realized this was in her best interest.
However, this all changed after the girls had a sleepover with their grandmother one weekend. They came home on Sunday, and when they were asked what fun things they did, they told their parent’s that they got baptized. Grandma had taken them to get baptized without mom and dad’s consent and she had also been secretly holding bible study sessions when the girls would go over.
After mom asked some more questions, her one daughter said that she wanted to get baptized because if she didn’t she was “going to go to hell.” Mom was incredibly upset and felt that her trust had been broken and a line was crossed . She sent an angry group text out and made it clear how upset she was, especially since her daughter believed so much that she would go to hell if she was not baptized. She ended the text saying that she could not let her daughters be around her mother anymore.

Hey girl! You’re going to tell your mom just what you told me. As long as you haven’t been sneakin’ around behind her back, I’m sure she’ll understand you being excited about a nice guy asking you out (and she’ll be thrilled to hear he’s a nice dude, trust me). After you come clean about agreeing to go out with him, talk to your mom about your options. Could you and your BF go out with a group of friends? Could your guy come over and watch a movie while your parents hang in another room? Your mom might not want you to go off on your own with a guy, so provide her with a couple options that involve you two getting to know each other better in a group.

Here’s the tough part: If your mom still says absolutely no guys for another year, you’re gonna have to let this guy know. If you sneak behind your mom’s back for a couple dates and she finds out, you’ll lose her trust. A few dates aren’t worth that. Instead, let the guy know you’re not allowed to date until next year. He may not be willing to wait (his loss!), but you wouldn’t want to date a guy like that, anyway!
