What Is Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome (DSPS)? Delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS) is a disorder in which a person's sleep is delayed by two hours or more beyond what is considered an acceptable or conventional bedtime. The delayed sleep then causes difficulty in being able to wake up at the desired time.
With the improved consistency of his bedtime and the earlier bedtime, some of this will likely improve. In case it doesn't, there are a few things to consider. You want to first determine what time he should be waking up based on when he went to bed to ensure he is getting enough sleep.
Avoid eating before bed if you can, and try not to eat less than three hours before sleep to avoid sleep disruption and unnecessary calories.
And yes, that includes weekends — sleeping in two or three hours later on a Sunday is going to make it harder to meet your new bedtime that night. But that doesn't mean you need to start a strict 9 p.m.-5 a.m. sleep schedule, though that is what I do and I highly recommend it.
