Essex College may not be a real school, but it was filmed on real college campuses.
*Spoilers for The Sex Lives of College Girls below!*
The Sex Lives of College Girls is officially back for its highly anticipated second season and we already can't get enough. We're reunited with our favorite suitemates, Bela, Whitney, Kimberly, and Leighton, as they take on their next semester at Essex College, a prestigious school in Vermont. While Kimberly lost her scholarship after cheating on her economics exam in the season one finale, Bela is starting a new all-female comedy magazine, Leighton is exploring her sexuality, and Whitney is figuring out who she is outside of soccer season.
Essex College is known for its killer themed parties and top-notch extracurriculars, but it doesn't even exist IRL (bummer, we know). Ahead, find everything we know about The Sex Lives of College Girls' filming locations and what college campuses we actually see on the show.
The prestigious college we see in The Sex Lives of College Girls isn't a real school, so if you were hoping to file an application, we send our sincerest apologies. On the show, Essex College is a prestigious school in Vermont but in real life, it's actually filmed in several universities across the U.S.
Per IMDb , The Sex Lives of College Girls ' first season was filmed at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, and Warner Brothers Studio in Burbank, California, in June 2021. The Poughkeepsie Journal reports that the show featured "exterior shots on and around campus extensively through its first season."
Showrunner Mindy Kaling even gave the publication a shoutout on Twitter , writing "We loved shooting in beautiful ⁦Poughkeepsie! The town and people in it are the best. Our cast and crew loved every minute of our stay there."
For season two, however, the show was filmed across the University of California in Los Angeles and the University of Washington from June to August 2022. According to a report by the University of Washington , filming took place on their Seattle campus, "primarily in the Quad." The university also revealed that around 100 students were hired as extras and that the crew was made up of local artists, vendors, and freelancers.

Condoms and lube are not the only things you need by your bedside — consider adding your inhaler, too.
Intense sex sessions can trigger dangerous asthma attacks, according to a new study by the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.
Hanky-panky is considered a strenuous exercise that requires a lot of energy, especially if you’re asthmatic.
“Many people don’t realize that the energy expenditure of sexual activity is about equivalent to walking up two flights of stairs,” said Dr. Ariel Leung, the study’s author.
Exercise has always been a risk for people with asthma due to the heavy breathing that inflames and swells the airways , causing the breathing tubes to narrow.
Sexually active asthmatics can suffer from “post-coital asthma exacerbations” if things get a little too rowdy under the sheets, according to the study .
However, when getting physically intimate, most people do not realize the symptoms of an asthma attack.
Some triggers include pollen, allergies, smoke, mold and exercise.
Leung urged people to be aware of the signs.
“When sexual activity-induced asthma is properly identified and treated, allergists are better able to improve their patient’s quality of life,” he said.
Using your inhaler 30 minutes prior to sex can prevent an asthma attack, allowing you and your partner to keep the party going.

Kimberly, Bela, Leighton, and Whitney portray college freshmen, but how old are the actresses in real life?
The Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble-led series The Sex Lives of College Girls follows Kimberly, Bela, Leighton, and Whitney as they navigate their freshman year at the prestigious Essex College in Vermont. The four suitemates go through the highs and lows of college life together, as they try to figure out their place on campus and discover who they are.
As college freshmen, Kimberly, Bela, Leighton, and Whitney are around 18 years old. But IRL, how old are the actresses who portray them? What about the upperclassmen and friends that they meet in their first trimester at Essex, such as Leighton’s brother Nico and Kimberly’s Sips coworker Lila? The answers might surprise you. As you stream season 2 of The Sex Lives of College Girls (which debuted on HBO Max on November 17!) , here’s everything you need to know about the cast’s real ages.
She portrays 18-year-old Kimberly Finkle, but Pauline Chalamet is the oldest of the quad squad. Born January 25, 1992, she is 30 years old.
Alyah Chanelle Scott, who plays soccer star Whitney Chase, is a bit closer to her character’s age. She turned 25 years old in July.
At 29 years old, Amrit Kaur is the second-oldest out of the Essex College suitemates. That makes her about 11 years older than her character, Bela Malhotra.
At 22 years old, Reneé Rapp is closer in age to a college senior than a college freshman. But that means she’s only about four years older than her character, Leighton Murray, and is the youngest of the group.
Ilia Isorelýs Paulino plays fan-favorite character Lila, a student at Essex and Kimberly’s hilariously witty coworker at Sips Café. In real life, Ilia’s 27 years old, so she’s a little less than 10 years older than her Sex Lives of College Girls character.
Canaan, portrayed by Christopher Meyer, is also an Essex student and Kimberly’s other Sips coworker. He’s also Whitney’s love interest throughout season 1 and into season 2. IRL, Christopher is 28 years old.
Mekki Leeper plays Eric, editor of Essex’s prestigious comedy group, The Catullan. Eric is likely between ages 18 and 20, which would mean Mekki is about eight or nine years older than his character.
Mitchell Slaggert portrays Jackson, a newcomer and transfer student at Essex College in season 2 of The Sex Live of College Girls . Considering he’s in the same dorm building as Kimberly, Bela, Leighton, and Whitney, it’s assumed that he’s also a freshman. In this case, at age 28, Mitchell is about a decade older than Jackson.
Lauren “Lolo” Spencer plays Jocelyn, an Essex College freshman who lives in Kimberly, Bela, Whitney, and Leighton’s dorm building. In a 2019 interview with CNN , the actress opened up about her ALS diagnosis at age 14 and how she’s lived with the disease for 18 years. According to the article at the time of publication, Lauren was in her early 30s, which would mean she’s likely in her mid-30s now.
Gavin Leatherwood, aka Nico, departed The Sex Lives of College Girls after season 1, but as Kimberly’s love interest, he certainly left an impression. It’s revealed in episode 1 of season 2 that his character is 21 years old, but in real life, Gavin is 28.
Alicia is Leighton’s girlfriend in season 1 of the HBO Max series, but they keep their relationship a secret since Leighton is still closeted. She’s also a student at Essex, but is 28 years old in real life.

Sex ed is in session! Even celebrity parents have to have the awkward birds and the bees discussion with their children — and many have gotten candid about how it went.
In September 2018, Kristen Bell exclusively told Us Weekly about how she and Dax Shepard planned on being transparent with their daughters, Lincoln and Delta.
“We decided when we had kids to be very, very honest with them and never to sort of spin a fairytale, even if it’s about hard subjects,” Bell explained at the time. However, when it came to the chat about where babies come from, the conversation did not go as the couple had originally planned.
“We said, ‘Well, mom has a vagina, and dad has a penis and there’s sperm, and an ovum and then they connect and it makes a baby,” she recounted. “Truly, by the second sentence, they had walked outside.”
Alyssa Milano , for her part, could not wait to have the discussion with her children, Milo and Elizabella, whom she shares with husband David Bugliari . “I love it all. I’m ready,” she dished to Us in August 2018. “I’m ready! I would do it now if they asked.”
Another star who hasn’t shied away from the topic is Gwyneth Paltrow . In an interview with Entertainment Tonight in October 2021, the Goop founder — who shares daughter Apple and son Moses with ex-husband Chris Martin — encouraged parents to be truthful when broaching the subject with their kids.
“I will always just encourage my children to really listen to themselves, listen to their instincts, listen to if something feels right and to act from that place,” the Iron Man star said at the time. “I try always to be neutral on the topic. I think my generation, we got a lot of messages around sex that made us feel bad about it. I try to just be curious. And teenagers are never going to want to talk to their parents about sex ever, so I sort of follow their lead. Luckily, in middle school they had a very thorough sex education, so the school handled the birds and the bees parts, and then I am there for any questions. But the questions are pretty minimal.”
While appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in October 2021, Paltrow recounted an interaction she had when her son Moses initially found out that her company sells vibrators . While her son was “embarrassed” at first, he ultimately came around. “A few months ago, he said … ‘I realized, no, this is great. You’re making people feel not embarrassed to buy something, and that’s great. You’re a feminist,’” the actress recalled to the host.

The Charmed star exclusively told Us in August 2018 that she was far from dreading having the talk with her children.
“I love it all. I’m ready,” she divulged. I’m ready! I would do it now if they asked.”
The actress added: “And for me, I think it’s raising kids that are socially aware and conscious. But still have childhoods and aren’t completely terrified from the moment they wake up until the moment they go to sleep like their mother.”

The Good Place actress exclusively told Us that she and her husband’s attempt at having the sex talk with their daughters didn’t go as planned.
“We said, ‘Well, mom has a vagina, and dad has a penis and there’s sperm, and an ovum and then they connect and it makes a baby,” she shared in September 2018. “Truly, by the second sentence, they had walked outside.”

During an October 2022 interview on Glennon Doyle 's podcast, “We Can Do Hard Things,” the Bridesmaids star mentioned that she had the sex talk with her daughter, Vivian, whom she shares with husband Ben Falcone . The Gilmore Girls alum noted that she wound up broaching the subject with Vivian while the two were picking up after their dog in their backyard, joking that it was “really a wonderful time.”
"Vivi just goes, 'Oh dear God, is this happening?' And I was like, 'There's different parts of bodies be it ... uh,' but at least I was just like, let me be awkward and get through it,” she recalled of the moment.

The model opened up about the time she had to have the talk with her oldest daughter Ronan, who is currently in college , after she googled “how to make a baby.” The Pretty Baby star and her husband Chris Henchy share two daughters Ronan and Grier.
“And I say to her, ‘Listen, If you can’t say penis or you can’t talk about sex… then you can’t watch these R-rated movies you want to watch,” Shields said in an interview with Fox News in February 2017. “They’re not as prepared as they think they are, so I broach it all the time.”
While appearing on the Late Show With Stephen Colbert in October 2021, the “My Body, My Podcast” host recommended not lying about the matter.
“If they ask, it’s because they're curious and they’re age appropriate,” Banks said at the time. “You should tell them straight up what it is. If you say ‘stork,’ then later on they're going to ask, ‘What else does she lie to me about?’ Because they're going to figure out soon enough it ain’t storks.”
The Pitch Perfect alum has two sons, Felix and Magnus, with whom she shares with husband Max Handelman .
