Size of the "S": 1 cm / 0,39 inches
Pushing works, too, to lift the lid of this small glass pillbox ;-) In my early teens, I had a soft spot for old stuff (I wouldn't call it antiquities, because these come at a different price). I found my then only second spectacle frames at a flea market, nicely silver-rimmed things, and used them for three or four years before I deemed myself too "grown-up" for them (at 15) and decided I needed someting more fashionable for my eyes. I loved old everything, cupboards, fashion (we are talking about fin de siècle), old lace, and old "luxury" pill boxes, you know, the small ones that are round or oval, with a nicely painted lid. This is a small glass box – old, of course – bought (for me, not by me) at a proper antique shop, and it was rather cheap, because the bottom part has a huge crack across the whole diameter and the lid, framed with brass, wasn't closing properly anymore already back then. The glass is of a beautiful turquoise-blue colour, with white bellflowers painted onto the upper lid. I've used both the glass box and the green Swarovski beads, which I keep inside and which once were part of a selfmade necklace, for another MM theme, "Trinket", you can check it out in the first comment, if you like.
My original idea of how to present this didn't quite work out: I envisioned a lightbeam shining through the opened lid, but how should I make the lightbeam visible? I cut a hole into a cardboard box and shone a flashlight through it, but that alone doesn't make the beam visible, of course. You need something else, smoke, steam, dust (no way!)... flour? Well, obviously I didn't use either for the image, because I somehow didn't have the nerve to play with fire and cardboard, or mess around with steam or flour, so in the end I decided to use an "old aquaintance" for some light trickery, the star filter. I will keep that "lightbeam idea" in mind, however, and hope that I can use it for a later MM theme once I have figured out how to set up eveything safely and conveniently.

For a while I was worried about those kids as they eventually ventured and walked over this thin ice. They were screaming, shouting, and howling disturbing the quietness of this beautiful wood. But, I guess today they are part of this natural environment. I waited to see them return safely to the other end of this pond. The Ice held them. I don't know if I were their age whether I'd run the same venture.... Have a great week ahead!
The Lotus Mahal ,Hampi is a beautiful building built in a graceful amalgamation of Hindu and Muslim architectural styles.It stands in the Zenana (ladies) enclosure and is one of the few undamaged buildings in the ruins at Hampi.It was used by the ladies of the Vijayanagar Royal family.
Hampi is the ruined capital city of the erstwhile Vijayanagar Kingdom in the present day state of Karnataka in India.It is a Unesco World Heritage site.
The Vijayanagar Kingdom was established in 1336 by the two brothers Harihara I and Bukka I of the Sangama dynasty.It rose to prominence as a culmination of attempts by the Hindu kingdoms of the south to ward off Islamic invasions.It reached its zenith under King Krishnadevaraya when its sway extended over large parts of southern India and even Kalinga or present day Odisha.Its power declined after the Battle of Talikota in 1565 when Vijayanagar was defeated by the combined armies of the five Deccan Sultanates.
Today its beautiful ruins stand testimony to its glory and wealth and the talent and capability of its architects and artisans.Extensive use was made of the locally available granite although the Lotus Mahal is an exception being built in rubble masonry and finely plastered.
When I was in my early teens ,my late father,a mining engineer ,was posted in the town of Bellary only about 50 kms from Hampi.My Dad was a keen photographer and he would often visit Hampi with his camera.I have wonderful memories of exploring these beautiful ruins with my Dad and there is a lovely collection of both black and white and coloured photos taken by him.I went back to Hampi last week after almost 37 years and it was a trip full of nostalgia for me.I missed my Dad so much and it seemed to me I could see him walking around the ruins with his camera trying to get the best angles for his beautiful shots.:-)

Invasive species, Birdsfoot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus) found in Seminary Fen Scientific & Natural Area in Chanhassen/Chaska, Minnesota. These grow all over along the roads in Minnesota.
This was originally the site of the Mudcura Sanitarium, a world-famous spa that was opened in 1909 and operated until 1951.
Per MNOpedia, in 1951, the sanitarium was sold to the Black Franciscans, Order of Friars Minor Conventual, from Louisville, Kentucky. They named it Assumption Seminary and the site became linked with both the Colleges of St. Catherine and St. Thomas in St. Paul.
The Seminary remained in operation until 1970 and then sat vacant for many years, becoming a popular hangout for teens and other thrill seekers. The main building burned and was demolished in 1997.
The land is now home to a Minnesota DNR Scientific & Natural Area that protects the rare calcareous fen that is now the star of the show here.
Blowing in the wind - snow on the beach... It was REALLY cold but REALLY beautiful!
A little photographic info about this image... I had been out in the cold at this point for about 20-30 min. The winds were pretty brutal and temps were in the low teens, so wind chills were in the single digits. I was almost to the car when I turned and saw the fence. I knew it would make a great photo. As I got closer, I saw that someone had walked along the dune fence to the left and I didn't want the footprints in the shot, so I needed to position myself so that I could crop those out in the frame. To enhance the size of the fence and pull in the awesome blue sky, I had to shoot very low... keep in mind that I'm standing in a snow drift over a foot deep. I squatted in the snow, lined up my shot... the wind it literally blowing up the back of my jacket... And I waited for a nice strong gust of wind that carried the snow up over me and into the frame. The sun is just out of the frame to the right, providing some nice shadows on the snow and fence. The texture of the sand mixed with snow provided an interesting foreground. I literally took two pics of this scene, that's it.
I had to get the exposure right because there was no checking the screen on the back of my camera. One, it was too bright and I couldn't see it anyway... and two, it was too cold to mess around with my settings. The shot after this is the exact same image without the snow blowing.
Post processing? Very little. I added a bit of contrast and sharpness, nothing else. It's pretty much right out of the camera. I shot this in RAW. I was at 500 ISO and while I shot my beach shots at 1/2500 of a sec around f8, for this shot I took my aperture up to f22 and took my shutter speed down to 1/500 to capture the blur of the snow as it blew over my head to give the sense of movement.
Everything I did for this shot, I did in a matter of minutes. :)
Aesthetically, I was obviously a product of the '90s, but Ms. Sassy Pants (aka, my daughter, Makayla) was manufactured post-millennium. That means that she thinks setups like these are fresh and unique.
Pain is the appropriate term for what this long time abandoned farmhouse near Sandwich,IL. is feeling.This was a beautiful house in its day-pocket doors,large windows,carvings on the eaves-but the good days are long gone.It is now popular with the local teens,the place is "graffitied" up from top to bottom....

35 for most of you is a nice spring day, but for us here in the far southern reaches of the states 35 is cold enough to put the bite on ALL of the trees that budded out and have dressed in their finest green colors over the past 2 months while we were experiencing temperature in the mid to upper 70’s! We will warm up quickly, but I know that some of you are experiencing temperatures in the teens and twenties and so this photo is for each and every one of you on a Wannabe Warmer Wednesday. A beautiful Ford Mustang is carefully being restored by someone who has an appreciation for the impact the mid-1960s Mustangs had on the car world. Once they were introduced, other car companies tried to bring out models that showed traces of the innovation of the Mustang but most fell far short. For a young man in his late teens or early 20s, the Mustang was a golden passport to great times in his life.
Now that winter has finally arrived for 2016, I feel better about posting some work from winters past. This was a morning in the mid teens after another fresh 6-inches overnight.

Thanks to SkyFire and the TPE app I knew it there was going to be a beautiful sunrise at a Lahaton Reservor. A place that I spent a great deal of time from my late teens to early 20's Lots of fond Memories.
The lake is down after years and years of drought, but up in the sense that there was actually water in it this morning.
Taken several years back. I carried away two major memories of our explorations there, one was the almost indescribable beauty and scope of the rock formations and two...just how bloody awful hot it was! The daytime temp was between 110 to 100 and high teens, with a couple going over 120degs. We could not go out during the day, (don't care what the tourist bureau said) so we would go out in the early mornings and last till about 11:00, then hole up in the hotel and go back out around 7:00. Night-time temps were usually at least 80 deg.
Still, as tough as that was, the show the desert and Mother Nature were presenting was mind blowing. Next time not going in June!

The main competitor of the Mercer RaceAbout for the testosterone saturated young men in the Mid teens, (the same group who would buy Cobras in the 60s) Stutz was more successful financially, outlasting Mercer by several years. This Bearcat, at Pebble Beach, was in the 'mandatory' yellow and black. Although not having the precarious seats of the earlier Bearcats, though not having a door, there was at least a bit of lateral barrier to protect you when you hit bumps at speed. No seat belts so you had to hold on with both hands. The cars were fast and hairy to drive fast, and the roads abysmally bad. But what a rush!!! The head lights had that wonderful scalloping often seen in light house lenses. Beautiful work of art.

Once upon a time, a favored party spot for local teens. Sunset Ridge sits at the northern tip of Perry Reservoir in Kansas and was a large campground before the northern part of the lake silted in.
Not much had changed about this place in the over 20 years since I'd been here. Better marked as the 1/2 wildlife refuge 1/2 public use area that it is. Still a beautiful place to catch some wildlife or a beautiful sunrise.

After finally finishing highschool, Eres found herself in a big anonymous city, where she started to attend college. She did hope for things to turn out for the better, finally... but in vain.
As always, Eres did receive best grades for her studies. Her profs were very fond of her, except for one. However hard she tried, her work did never please one of her female professers.
Eres knew, that she had to cope with the situation she was in, especially, since her financial situation was somewhat tight. So she returned to fleeing into the virtual worlds, which always gave her some dearly needed comfort. Safely hidden in the confinements of her room, she could once again be, who she wanted to be... who she'd dreamed to be.
When she needed to meet people out of school, she went to an arcarde, that was not far from her rented room. Of course, here there were not the teens, she had watched during her highschool days. The boys and girls playing their silly mating games. Boys showing off their gaming skills, girls admiring them... No, at this place there were mostly grown up men. People who were playing slot machines. And beside those, some adolescent boys, who were competing in arcade games, they should not be permitted to play here. Those youths almost unnoticed by the adults around. Eres did watch them play, while sitting on a bar stool in front of a console.
Over time, she became a regular visitor. She was never playing, but sometimes buying a beverage and sipping on it slowly. Soon, she became aware, that the eyes of the older guys did often wander towards her. Instead of buying a softdrink out of her meager options herself, she soon got bought drinks. Since she never accepted any strong liquors, people bought her beer. No one ever offered the drink to her themselves. They let it be delivered to her by the waitress, a fellow student of Eres. Things went like this for some weeks, until something did change, although Eres did not notice.

With temperatures hanging in the mid teens and wind hills near zero on a Crystal clear beautiful night, engineer Adam has his train rolling at track speed with CMQ 9014 and 9011 doing the honors on this nights job 420 seen passing over the West Branch of the Penobscot River that connects Elbow and Quakish Lakes. Once arriving into Millinocket the the 420 will be in town for several hours doing their normal work and waiting on train 909 to come north before returning south. After missing these two come in on Job 2 in perfect light by pure stupidity on my part the few night shots we got around Brownville and Millinocket made up for it. I was very hesitant to put up 6 speed lights on this bridge, it sways a lot and and sudden movement makes the bridge tilt side to side so every move was slow and precise when setting up and tearing down.
