I am driving myself crazy trying to plan the perfect beach vacation for my family. My husband and our three kids, ages 8, 12 and 14 plan to drive from VA down to Florida in August. We have always vacationed on the Atlantic coast, so we are used to a beach with lots of waves. I wanted to try something different, so I have been looking at the Keys, and a place like Hawk's Cay seems to have lots of activities to keep our kids from getting bored. However, I have also looked at South Seas Captiva , Pink Shell, Anna Maria and Siesta Key . We are mostly interested in swimming, relaxing and would try snorkeling if we went to the keys. We are a pretty quiet family and my husband and I are both educators, so we can't afford luxury, but are willing to splurge a little since this is our only vacation.
If you could pick one great Florida beach resort for my family, which would you choose? I would appreciate any input!
Probably a little shorter drive would be the Panhandle region of Florida ... like Destin , Pensacola etc. and you still get the Gulf water.
Why do you think your kids will be bored, with a great beach and watersports? Wont that (and wifi in the evenings) be enough? Of do you need a big razzmatazz?
If you need the razzmatazz, Hawks key is fine, if pricy. Biggest problem is, the beach there is small and man made. For Real beach razzmatazz i'd go for the Tradewinds at St Pete Beach . they have their own waterpark.
For a small town old time feel, but with ice creams and minigolf (as well as watersport like kayaking with manatees) try Anna Maria . This are also has a free trolley so you might feel ok letting them free-range a bit.
Check out Marco Island . Beach is beautiful. Enough for kids to do. Within driving distance to the Keys for s snorkeling adventure. The island is safe, sunsets are breathtaking. You can relax or find things to do. There are reasons Marco Island wins awards.

Issues that some parents might want to know is that the beach is topless (some areas more so than others), there is a fair number of homeless people (again, more in some areas than others) and occasionally gay couples (but certainly not PDA). If you daughter likes the pool, beaches and shopping, she'll have a great time.
