Gym Leaders can be tough, but pulling off these amazing cosplays seems even tougher.

The Pokémon franchise was created in the mid-'90s and introduced us to a vast universe that has grown exponentially over the years. What started as a set of 151 "Pocket Monsters" has now developed into an array of over 800 creatures. It's a phenomenon that might possibly never die.
Naturally, every new generation of Pokémon serves a slew of fresh faces, including trainers, antagonists, and gym leaders. The latter group hardly gets the recognition they deserve for being experts at what they do, but certain fans pay homage in the coolest way possible. Let's check out some of the greatest and most creative Pokémon Gym Leader cosplays.
The key to duplicating Whitney's look lies within how accurate the hair is. Not only did this fan (@morganlefoy) nail the shape, but she also got the color just right. Morgan even gave her eyebrows the pink treatment to make her appearance pop a little more. The outfit is well made and closely resembles one of Whitney's most popular ensembles.
Of course, the Goldenrod Gym Leader wouldn't be who she is without a Miltank, so Morgan made sure to keep an adorable stuffed version around for photos. Whitney's token Pokémon was a headache for most players in the early video games, so to see it so small and plushy is more humorous than it should be.
Wallace specializes in Water-type Pokémon, so it makes sense that all of his major details are turquoise. Like Morgan and her Whitney cosplay, Gianluigi (@glacex) went beyond the wig and tinted his eyebrows as well. The extra pop of color perfectly suits the aesthetic of the Sootopolis Gym Leader.
Wallace's outfit is just as extravagant as the rest of his appearance and Gianluigi replicated it flawlessly. He nails both the physical aspect of this cosplay and the attitude behind it. All he needs is a Milotic to call his own and he's good to go. As seen above, a stuffed animal can always come in handy.
Sabrina has always been one of the most popular Gym Leaders in the franchise. She has been around since the dawn of Pokémon and she specializes in the most intriguing type: Psychic. On top of that, she has possessed psychic abilities of her own since she was a child.
Cosplayer Sophii (@ohmysophii) took note of Sabrina's otherworldly powers and used baseballs painted like Poké Balls as magical floating props. She even mastered the intense glare that makes you feel like she's reading your mind at any given moment. The outfit is standard Sabrina and the wig is spot-on, which propelled Sophii's cosplay to the next level.
Lt. Surge's name tells you everything you need to know about him; he's a soldier that specializes in Electric-type Pokémon. Though his outfit occasionally varies, his military background defines his colors and patterns of choice. Surge is one of the most famous Gym Leaders thanks to his favorite Poké-partner, Raichu.
Konrad (@comikonrad) humorously inserted the Pokémon with a little photo editing, but the rest of his cosplay is the real deal. Everything from the camouflage cargo pants to the dog tags is exactly where it needs to be. He even added an extra accessory: a Poké Ball clipped to his belt.
Blaine is a smoking gun of a Gym Leader that specializes in Fire-type Pokémon, so it's fair to call him a hothead. Therefore, the editing done on Switchy's photo is a nice touch that cheekily emphasizes the costume. While Blaine's token appearance involves a shiny bald head, this ensemble favors an alternate look that relies on the accessories: a hat, a cane, and a fabulous pair of shades.
Of course, you can't cosplay the Cinnabar Gym Leader without his wild mustache. It's his most important feature (aside from the shiny head), and Switchy's faux facial hair is definitely up to par.
Misty is part of the dynamic trio of the Pokémon franchise—alongside Brock and Ash—so fans are always ready and willing to dress up as the Water-type specialist. As we all know, her look isn't the most complicated to duplicate. All you need is a suitable wig (if you're not naturally a redhead or are unwilling to dye your hair), high-waisted jean shorts, and suspenders.
However, Charity (@charity.grace) added a unique touch to this cosplay: her children. While her Misty outfit is excellent, the adorable kids accompanying their mother as Umbreon and Pikachu are the icing on the cake. We're assuming no one wanted to take one for the team and dress up as Staryu or Togepi, but we'll let it slide.
Making another appearance on the list is Sabrina, whose popularity remains impressively intact to this day. Professional drag queen and cosplayer Phi Phi O'Hara (Jaremi Carey) went above and beyond with this phenomenal psychic get-up. Like Sophii, she nails the intense glare associated with the Saffron Gym Leader.
The wig and the outfit are immaculate, but it's the accessory of choice that really stands out. Sabrina is just as spooky as her Pokémon of choice, and she has a creepy history with dolls. The Poké Ball is a brilliant touch where it almost looks like the doll is making it float.
Nessa is one of the newest Gym Leaders on this list and she specializes in Water-type Pokémon, which explains the blue present throughout her outfit and hair. Aside from this, little is known about her since she's making her debut on November 15 in the Pokémon Sword and Shield video games. Then again, cosplayers don't need character details to craft an impressive outfit.
Leira (@leiracosplays) tackled the intricate cosplay like a pro with leftover fabrics and foam scraps. Though she claims the photo above isn't the completed look, we can't imagine it getting any more perfect. She looks like she's ready to hop into the game and defeat some trainers herself.
Bea is another newcomer who specializes in Fighting-type Pokémon. Like Nessa, she's set to make her debut on Pokémon Sword and Shield. Also like Nessa, Leira is able to cosplay Bea in the most flawless manner. We weren't kidding when we said she's ready to hop into the video game.
Bea's character design is equal parts stunning and fun. The hairband, the shorts, the singular glove, and the unique top that covers her torso combine to form a specific look that fans are bound to replicate for years to come. Like the Gym Leader, Leira carries a determined glare fit for a true fighter.
This cosplay is brilliant for several reasons, but not many people are willing to craft Brock's face from scratch for a costume. Sure, fans will spend time and money on a proper wig and suitable clothes, but we've never seen a Brock mask quite like this.
The Pewter Gym Leader famously specializes in Rock-type Pokémon, so the Onix prop complements the look. A cosplay that's equally humorous and immaculate is hard to create, but @atmcosplay makes it seem entirely effortless. And don't worry, this costume doesn't render him blind—he can see through the eye slits in the mask. Bravo, Brock.
