Angela saw the slight nod from the woman. That was her cue. She stepped forward as she had a dozen other times earlier this evening. This was the last one so it would be her final chore for the evening.

Angela heard a collective gasp from the audience as they heard the news. Angela knew that George Lewis was a famous British actor and that he had been born to a very wealthy family. He was currently one of the ten richest men in the world, thanks to his various inheritances and did not have to work at all. But he was a highly sought after actor. At the same time, he was one of the most despised men in the world because of his arrogance.
�Her lineage traces back to English royalty,� the auctioneer added. �Now what am I bid for this famous royal beauty?�
Angela blocked out the remaining sounds as she stood at the back of the stage. She became lost in thoughts of her own. This girl ’ s life changed tonight. Her own life had changed six months earlier.
It had been her own fault and she blamed nobody but herself. Cedric had warned her. So had her husband who had tried every conceivable way to keep her from doing what she planned to do. But she was too headstrong to listen to their warnings. She was too sure of herself.
Now she was property, just like the girl in front of her who was being sold. She was owned by Cedric. But she couldn ’ t even blame Cedric for her new status in life. He had bought her to save her from some unknown and probably horrible fate.
But he did own her now. That much was firmly established. He allowed her to return to her family but he retained the rights to summon her for three months out of every year. She was just finishing her term of his latest summons. In two days, she would return to her family.
That did not mean that she would return to normalcy, however. Cedric owned her completely. She had been captured and processed into slavery. She had a tattoo with her slave serial number to prove that. So she was not free even when she returned home. Cedric had offered her husband an arrangement. While Cedric would always retain ownership of her, John would be allowed to rent his wife during periods when she was not serving Cedric. Cedric did not charge for the rental. Well, actually he did but the one dollar per year rental fee was just to make the arrangement seem more like a real contract.
In two days, she would be returned to her family. But she wasn ’ t sure that she was looking forward to that. She had grown to feel safe in this island compound of these slavers. She knew what her status was. Life was not predictable here by any means, but she knew her role. She was a slave. She was owned by Cedric.
At home, she never knew what to expect. She had been really looking forward to being returned home after the first time Cedric summoned her. But her life had been a confused swirl of conflicting roles. It was uncomfortable for her; very uncomfortable.
�The auction is over, my beautiful bird.� She heard Cedric ’ s voice and turned toward her, seeing her owner smiling at her.
Angela quickly tucked her hands in the small of her back, arching her back to thrust out her chest. This was the way her owner wanted her to present. There was very little of the silly kneeling and other poses that many of the owners employed. Cedric simply wanted his girl to display her charms.
�Yes, Master,� she replied. She was not sure why he referred to her as a bird. A year and a half earlier, he had sold a group of six college friends. He described them as the birds and said that there would never be a finer collection of female flesh ever sold again on the same night.
