Our Hedo Dick-tionary Volume 1 and Volume 2 are a hit so by popular request, we’ve put together a third and themed installment of our word-smithing series, terms & words to know in BDSM.
Defining BDSM is a challenging thing do: the vocabulary is extensive and specific. However, the very language of BDSM is essentially a part of the play. This is by no means a complete list of kink terminology, but rather a brief selection of key terms.

Hard limits and soft limits are activities that a person in a BDSM scene won’t do. Hard limits cannot be negotiated.

A person who is dominant/a person who is submissive.

A switch refers to someone who alternates between the roles of dominant and submissive and/or top and bottom.

Breath Play is a type of BDSM play wherein the breath of one participant, often the sub, is controlled by choking or holding the breath.

In the kink community, vanilla is a term to designate “not BDSM” or people and practices outside the kink scene. As the term implies, it’s “plain, ordinary, normal.”

Daddy Dom Little Girl is a form of BDSM that often includes ageplay.

Shibari is a type of rope bondage originating in Japan that is often elaborate and intricate in its patterns.

An agreed upon word or phrase that a submissive can say during a scene to stop the activity or session immediately.

: sexual activity involving such practices as the use of physical restraints, the granting and relinquishing of control, and the infliction of pain

BDSM refers to a range of sexual preferences that generally relate to enjoyment of physical control, psychological control, and/or pain. It can be broken down into six overarching components: bondage and discipline, domination and submission, and sadism and masochism. Bondage and discipline consist of using physical or psychological restraints, domination and submission involve an exchange of power and control, and sadism and masochism refer to taking pleasure in others' or one's own pain or humiliation. Those who practice BDSM may identify with one or more, in any combination, of these components. — Ali Hebert and Angela Weaver , Canadian Journal of Human Sexuality , August 2014 Whatever one thinks of BDSM , given the pain and intensity associated with it, it certainly doesn't come across as a stress-reducing activity—to most outsiders, there wouldn't appear to be anything relaxing about whips and handcuffs. — Roni Jacobson , New York Magazine , 3 Feb. 2015
