15 Essential Bondage & BDSM Toys, Tools, and Restraints in 2022
Whether you’re deeply involved in all-things kink or more on the vanilla side of things, Bondage and BDSM play still has plenty to offer to almost anyone. Especially today, with these practices coming out into the light and becoming more mainstream than ever.
Wearing a choker in public has never been so normalized, and I firmly believe that’s how things should be… Though I might be a bit biased, running a website called Tabooless and all.
Before anyone @s me, know that I understand that Bondage and BDSM are two completely different subjects . But since there is plenty of overlap between the two when it comes to the tools used, I decided to bundle them together for the sake of simplicity.
Now before we get into suggestions and favorites, know that most of the best bondage equipment is usually made by individuals & small companies, not big brands.
So if you’re really serious about your practice, you should really look into your own local fetish scene and attend fetish conventions where you’ll be able to find all the stuff that you might need.
Alternatively, if your local scene is thin to non-existent, Etsy and Fetlife are also two other great channels to get in touch with some quality fetish artisans. But these options can also be quite pricey and tricky to get to for some.
So if you’re looking for some good, accessible, and/or affordable online alternatives, this article is for you!

Best Sybian alternative for BDSM/Forced Orgasms
Best chastity devices for men & women
When it comes to bondage, this is where most people start. Heck, even some of the most vanilla folks out there have had some experience with Cuffs and straps. But these gateway bondage items are still essential for pros and beginners alike, so don’t dismiss them just yet.
After all, Straps, cuffs, and gags are the easiest way to tie up someone in a pinch, and there are tons of gorgeous items at your disposal to do so.
If you’re looking for the cheapest quality option around, most beginners and frugal folks swear by Sportsheets .
They have almost anything you need to get you started and while they don’t hold any leather options, most of their options are machine washable. So whether you’re looking for traditional restraints, spreader bars, or collars & leashes, they got you covered.
Their under the bed restraint kit will always remain a staple kit for anyone getting started since it includes everything you’ll need to tie anyone to your bed or to themselves. All this versatility comes from the fact that you can easily tie the restraints to each other to make simple hands and feet cuffs if the need arises.
Otherwise, if you’re in for some quality leather options that are still affordable, our favorite place to shop is definitely the Stockroom .
The Stockroom is a smorgasbord of independent & in-house brands aiming to bring you the best affordable quality fetish gear there is. It is easily my one-stop shop for anything bondage and BDSM and you should find almost anything you need there.
If you’re in Europe , U.K. Based Uberkinky is another great alternative for affordable yet quality bondage gear.
If you’re looking for accessible, affordable, and quick & easy ways to tie up your sub or significant other, it doesn’t get much better than this folks!
Gags, like most restraints, are all about deprivation.
When it comes to materials, most options will do, but sticking to silicone for the gag itself will ensure that it’ll last a long time while still remaining hygienic. This is all thanks to silicone being non-porous and easily sanitized. Something that can be quite useful if you have more than one sub.
To sanitize silicone gags, simply remove them from their straps and boil them for a few minutes. If the gag can’t be removed, a simple 10% bleach water solution wash followed by a thorough rinse will also do the trick.
Being a mouthful, ball gags are perfect for restricting the user’s speech and breathing.
It’s also not uncommon to drool while wearing one, so it can be rather humiliating for the person wearing it. So this is definitely something to keep in mind when you’re seeking to dish out some punishment!
If you’d rather have a gag you can bite on, you’re better off going with a bit gag.
These will also protect the corners of the mouth of the sub, which can get irritated when the straps can reach the mouth.
Also, being able to bite down on these during especially rough play is quite useful, allowing you to push the pain further than you normally would sans bit gag.
It’s also easier to breathe and talk with these, so definitely consider this when making your choice.
If you’d rather have a ball gag but still wish to protect the corners of the mouth, we’re especially fond of this ball gag in the Dildo Dealer Household. The Beautiful Fabric strap is also removable, so it is easy to hand or machine wash.
Whether you need to silence a bratty sub or just give them something to bite on, gags have a lot to offer.
Just stick to silicone if you want your gags to live long hygienic lives.
With its origins tracing back to ancient Japan, this practice sure has come a long way.
Originally used to restrain captives by Samurais and law enforcement, this beautiful art form has now transcended to the wonderful world of kink.
And unlike traditional restraints, Shibari isn’t only about restraining folks.
It’s a science as much as it is a form of artistic expression, with complex and beautiful designs being the norm.
The positioning of the ropes along with the careful placement of knots can stimulate pressure points along the body to great effect. And it’s not uncommon for people to land in “Sub Space”, a euphoric and trance-like experience caused by a cocktail of endorphins & other hormones being released in the body.
This also means that Shibari has quite a learning curve for the aspiring rigger.
So it is very important that you get familiar with the practice since plenty of harm can be done by cutting circulation to vital parts of the body.
If you really wish to pursue this wonderful hobby, finding a good workshop from a respected rigger in your community is your best bet.
But to get you started, there are still some pretty good resources out there:
The Two Knotty Boys books are highly praised across the web, but in our opinion, they’re a little dated and focus a tad too much on aesthetic ties as opposed to practical ones. But if the visual aspect of Shibari is your thing, there’s still plenty to love here.
Complete Shibari Vol. 1 by Douglas Kent is much more practical and packed with pictures to help you work your way up from the most basic ties to the more complex ones. This is the better option for complete beginners since it teaches the philosophies and roles of the riggers and subs in detail as well.
Alternatively, Twisted Monk has loads of great video tutorials on their youtube channel also.
Speaking of Twisted Monk , they’re by far one of the best rope companies you’ll find today.
And while they specialize in ethically sourced hemp rope, their extensive collection does include other common options as well as other exotic ropes.
The colors they offer are gorgeous, with a few unique multicolored options available as well.
And many of you will be glad to know that their dying and conditioning process is a 100% eco-friendly.
Otherwise, their curiosity kits are a great start if you wish to learn the ropes ( wink wink ) since they all include an instructional DVD along with enough rope to get you started.
If you’re a fan of electrostimulation, they also make beautiful electroconductive ropes that will work with most Violet wands and Estim boxes! Just don’t use these for suspension since they aren’t made to support the weight of a human being.
Shibari goes far beyond BDSM and Bondage. It is a beautiful art form and science that requires plenty of patience and education. But it is well worth it for those courageous enough to make the jump!
I’m really perplexed as to why bondage tape isn’t more popular because, ever since trying it, I’ve felt like this should be an indispensable tool for ANY bondage enthusiasts!
Bondage Tape is a tape that only sticks to itself. So it won’t rip skin or hair, making it a great universal BDSM & Bondage tool.
It’s a fast and efficient way of making quick cuffs for arms and legs or tying someone to a bedpost. Plus, you can easily gag ( after putting something in their mouth ) or blindfold someone without causing any unwanted suffering!
While it won’t be as secure as some other types of restraints, if you wrap it around itself multiple times, it can get pretty hard to break free from. But still, if you have a particularly strong and/or bratty sub, they might still be able to liberate themselves if they wanted to.
The best feature of bondage tape is really how quick & easy it is to use during intercourse.
If you’ve done any kind of bondage, you’ll know that ropes, cuffs & straps can take quite a while to set up. Something that can easily interrupt your state of arousal at the moment.
With bondage tape though, you can easily tie someone up WHILE having sex, no interruption needed. This is why it has become such a favorite in our household, and why I know it’ll become a favorite of yours as well.
I still appreciate all the anticipation of methodically tying someone up with traditional bondage gear, and in some ways, it can be even more secure than tape, which adds to the feeling of restriction. But bondage tape really shines for when both of you just can’t wait to get down to business!
Bondage Tape is also entirely reusable!
Once you are done, if you carefully unroll the restraints, it is possible to salvage and reuse the tape. It does tend to crumple upon itself so you’ll have to be extra careful when rerolling the tape ( I like keeping an empty roll for this purpose ). Still, bondage tape is pretty cheap, so it isn’t dramatic if your used tape is beyond salvaging.
You might need some safety scissors .
I highly suggest using them, as they’ll make it safer to handle mid & post-play. Plus, I’d much rather loose safety scissors in the bed than my sharpest pair!
Since bondage tape only sticks to itself, it’s a great way of rapidly tying, blindfolding, or even gagging someone up! So if you don’t have the time or patience to go with the traditional approach, or you only have room for one bondage item in your luggage, this is it, folks!
As mentioned earlier, most bondage and BDSM toys are about inducing a sense of deprivation to the sub.
And following that trend, blindfolds and hoods are some of the most powerful tools to incorporate into your practice.
Sensory deprivation, while simple in practice, can be more intense than any other type of restriction.
This is because blocking out one or more of your senses forces your remaining sensory receptors to sharpen and intensify in an attempt to compensate.
So it is not uncommon for folks to feel, smell, hear & taste more intensely when blindfolded.
Couple that with a certain loss of self, making the sensory deprived less self-conscious and more likely of letting go of self-imposed restrictions and you’ve got yourself a cocktail for a potent experience.
This feeling can also be felt by the dominant party as well. Not having any eyes on them, they’re freer to truly embrace the moment, without having to think about looking the part during the whole ordeal.
You don’t have to invest much to get into sensory deprivation.
All you really need is some sort of scarf, sleep mask, or even a pillow, which are all items that most of you should have handy anyway.
But if you want to push things even further, earplugs can make the sensation of isolation even more intense!
For this reason, most dedicated blindfolds are mostly sold for aesthetic appeal. So if you’re not that into the BDSM look, they can easily be skipped entirely.
On the other hand, hoods are a little different and a little harder to substitute.
Hoods can be quite varied as different models can target different senses.
Some might be more about preventing you to speak, see or hear, while others will do it all at once. Many models are also entirely adjustable, allowing you to restrict the senses of your choosing at any given moment.
Plus, having your whole head covered can really help with the sense of isolation and anonymity.
Some hoods will focus entirely on anonymity. They’ll allow you to see, hear and speak all you want. These hoods are solely meant to hide the identity of the wearer, something that can be quite interesting at BDSM parties.
Just like the blindfold, it’ll allow the wearer to feel less self-conscious and able to fully express themselves without the fear of being discovered.
When you’re looking for a way to intensify your bondage & BDSM experiences, blindfolds & hoods are hard to skip.
Sensory deprivation and a lack of self-awareness can really go a long way, so don’t underestimate these powerful tools!
Bondage & BDSM wear might seem like it is all about aesthetics, and while the visuals do help to get into the mood, it couldn’t be further from the truth.
The most common type of fetish wear is by far the Collar.
Doubling as a leash when the need arises, the collar is an item usually worn by the sub or slave in the relationship as a proof of ownership.
It’s essentially the BDSM equivalent of a wedding ring!
These items range from sturdy bondage leather straps to more symbolic and decorative chokers that would easily pass as fashion statements when out in public.
Body Harnesses are another staple of wearable bondage.
Just like the collar, they could be worn outside as a statement, but they can also be used to grab onto or in conjunction with other restraints.
This is because it is rather easy to use the straps and rings found on a bondage harness to attach the arms and legs of the wearer to their own body, amongst many other things.
Just like most leather items, your local fetish community, Etsy and FetLife are probably the best places to look. But there is still plenty of good stuff to be found around the web as well.

Being essentially one of the oldest fetish stores around, it’s hard to miss the Stockroom’s selection .
So if you’re looking for some good affordable leather, look no further.
Otherwise, if you’re the type who likes to wear straps and body harnesses in public, our favorite company for that purpose is definitely Bijoux Indiscrets .
They carry all sorts of fashionable BDSM inspired items that you certainly won’t be shy to show off in public.
If you’re serious about your BDSM and Bondage addiction, collars & body harnesses are where it’s at.
It’s a great way to show off your colors behind closed doors or even when out and about!
Ahhh forced orgasms, another staple of bondage and BDSM!
The only issue with this practice is that it can be quite hands-on and involved, preventing the dom from applying other methods onto their subs.
But if you’re the proud owner of a Wand ( another forced orgasm staple ) you will probably fall in love with the Aslan Forced Orgasm harness!
I’ve tried other cheap harnesses of this type but nothing beats the stability, quality, and look of this harness!
It’s not even my Canadian bias speaking either, I loved Aslan even before I knew they were from this distant land of “Canadia”.
This harness will work with most full-sized wands.
Just to be safe, I would still stick with wands that are compatible with “Hitachi” Magic Wand attachments since it’s become quite the standard over the years!
This is the most affordable way to achieve forced orgasms other than just manually holding a wand against your sub.
Plus, Aslan harnesses are all of the highest quality and they look hot as hell compared to your cheap and unstable made in china wand holders!
For those who enjoy a fair bit of pain, impact play can be quite exhilarating. But before the fun, here are a few notes on safety:
While you can get spanked all over the place, there are a few “red zones” that should be avoided at all costs.
Joints and bony areas like the head, neck, and articulations should be avoided at all costs. It’s also very easy to hit and even fracture the tailbone when aiming for the ass cheeks, so please be careful and ghost your swings before going full force.
There are also a few areas that aren’t necessarily dangerous but still remain extremely sensitive and should be avoided or played with very softly. The most common are the inside of the thighs, the palms of the hands, the soles of the feet, as well as the armpits.
No matter where you want to strike, as a general rule, start softly and work your way up in intensity.
Including a safe word, a pain scale of 1 to 10, or using the simpler “stoplights” method ( Green, yellow or red ) will help tremendously with communication while playing. And communication is especially important during impact play.
Finally, cleanliness is also very important since these items might get into contact with blood and other fluids. So please wash your tools thoroughly between uses and avoid sharing them between untested partners.
First of all, impact play doesn’t have to be expensive at all.
Hands, wooden spoons, and flat hairbrushes are all common tools used in the practice that you can easily find around the house. But if you wish to push things a little further, dedicated tools are pretty hard to beat.
Floggers are some of the most forgiving tools at lower velocities since they spread their impact throughout their multiples tails. But it is not impossible to break the skin if you put some of your back into it. So still treat them with respect.
Use them to softly tickle your victims between lashes to build tension and anticipation.
Riding crops are fun and accessible to use. The small impact zone also means that they’re more on the stingy side of pain. Still, be careful during play since they’re quite aerodynamic by design, so it’s easy to go overboard.
You should also be very careful not to hit your SO or Sub with the stick itself since this can cause some serious unwanted pain.
Paddles have the largest impact zones of the bunch, so you’ll get more of a thud than a sting. Of course, the material they come in has a lot to do with this, with leather paddles stinging more than wooden ones.
Just keep in mind that you have to be especially careful with bony areas and you should avoid tailbones at all costs!
Canes/Rods are extremely stingy due to their small impact area. They cut through air like a hot knife through butter, so you’ll have to use a lot of restraint while swinging.
It’s also very important that you inspect these tools prior to any impact play since they’re rather easy to break. And no one likes an ass full of splinters!
Whips are the most dangerous of the bunch and should definitely be left to the professionals. This is because it is extremely easy to break the skin and take an eye out if you don’t know what you’re doing.
Still, If you’re really into the idea, take classes with renowned people in your local fetish scene and make sure you’re really good at it before attempting anything on anyone.
I know we’re starting sound like a broken record , but again, most of the best tools will be found in your local fetish scene. But it is not impossible to find something decent around the web either.
BareLeatherWorks is universally loved and you can find a lot of their designs on Mr-S-Leather here and there . Cane-Iac is another great resource for affordable hand-made canes.
Otherwise, if you’re looking for some other affordable and decent options, by now you should know I’m a sucker for The Stockroom’s selection . Of course, if you’re in Europe, U.K. based Uberkinky is definitely the way to g
