This post, A Quick Guide to Mouth Gags, is by my friend Avani.
One of the most popular toys in BDSM is the mouth gag. I consider it a household favorite in my sex toy collection. However, there are a few misconceptions about using a gag.
A gag is an easy-to-use tool used in sexual bondage and roleplay. You strap the gag into your mouth, which many consider a very private and intimate part of your body, to arouse feelings of vulnerability, helplessness, humiliation, frustration, embarrassment, submission, discomfort, suffering, etc.
When you wear a gag, anything you say or scream is muffled. You can no longer communicate because you no longer have your voice.
This gives you the feeling of vulnerability and that you are at the mercy of whoever is Topping you.
Besides the erotic feelings that come with being gagged, you’ll also find yourself drooling a lot.
When you can’t close your mouth completely around the gag, you’ll start salivating all over the toy—which some people find this very fucking hot.
It can be embarrassing for the bottom and a nice visual treat for the Top.
Becoming uncomfortable is part of the play when it comes to gags. And I think it’s given me the most incredible sexual buildup before penetration.
If part of your kink is making things more uncomfortable with your bottom, you can use bigger gags.
I have used mouth gags both as a submissive and master and realized just the struggle of having a mouth gag on is enough to make me wet. I love the erotic feelings of submissiveness. The sense that I’m not able to speak or act for myself.
Depending on the gag, it also puts my mouth on display. Which allows my master to put his fingers and other things in my mouth. And there’s nothing I can do about it.
I’m not even able to bite whatever object or organ is being put into my mouth. I could be opened up to strangers or another person, and I would be completely vulnerable!
It is a versatile toy that can be used in a dom-sub relationship. When my partner and I started using a gag, it led to many new and unique sensations. Feelings of vulnerability, drool play, sloppiness, and more.
Like any other sex toy, there are a variety of mouth gags. And one is never enough. Mouth gags are so rich in variety that you can’t get enough of them. Here are some of the different variations of mouth gags:
The most straightforward type of mouth gags. This is great for beginners to start with. This gag is made explicitly for gagging. It has some sort of ball on a fabric to be held around the head. The ball usually goes into the mouth, and straps are fastened around the head to keep it in one place.
I like that it gives your mouth a feeling of being filled with something. Like there is a big piece of meat in there. The only problem is that these gags start hurting your jaw when used for a long time.
Here is a very good beginner-friendly ball gag that’s made with safety in mind.
Initially used in pony play kink but later included in BDSM, bit gags are slightly different than ball gags. Like the ball gag, they are usually put into the mouth, but their shape is like a long skinny bar. This bar is generally made from squishy material, which goes into the mouth for the bottom to bite. Depending on the design, the bar might stick out of the corners of the mouth or not.
If you think that they go behind the teeth, you are wrong! They stay in front where your teeth can dig deep into them more easily. Don’t worry though, they are gentler on the mouth, and don’t stress your jaw as much since you aren’t constantly keeping your mouth open.
I find bit gags very fun and many times much easier to use.
As you can probably guess by reading the name, these straps will have a dildo attached to them.
It can be worn either way. This means the dildo can jut out of the face or turn inside the mouth. Depending on personal preference. It can also be long enough to touch the inside of the mouth or just protrude inside the lips.
It is always an excellent sexual choice for the players because it is easy to use, and people love it as a tool for humiliation. Also, it provides a neat way of including someone in sexual play. Solo players can use this gag to feel humiliated for themselves.
It might seem like an experiment, but you can always use duct tape gags as a gag. A strip of duct tape is removed from the roll and then stuck over the mouth. Almost anyone can use it, and it’s pretty popular in the community.
The good thing is that nobody will ever know that you are using a duct tape gag because if someone finds out duct tape in your wardrobe, nobody will relate it to sexual play.
It’s pretty cheap, and it provides a highly arousing visual according to various users (including yours truly ‘the writer’!!).
There are many types of mouth gags. O-ring gags or spider BDSM gags are also popular. They are used while having oral sex, and the open-mouth design is loved by many people.
Other categories of mouth gags are used explicitly for humiliating your bottom. For example, Jennings mouth gags, gags from household objects, metal gags, and many different varieties are out there. You can explore them one by one.

Being a habitual gag user, here are some essential things I want to say.
First of all, talk about it with your partner. This can be difficult, but it’s essential. You need to discuss non-verbal safewords because, although using gags is fun, it can be dangerous if you cannot communicate that you are having issues.
Second, start slow. Sex is fun. Gagging is the ultimate fun, and when drool comes, oh god!! It is all part of the play, but setting boundaries is essential. Don’t explore further than you are comfortable with. I’m sure you’ll love gagging. Just make sure you are comfortable with what’s happening.
Have fun exploring. Hygiene is essential. And I hope you have lots of fun with gags added to your sexual repertoire.
