A shocking video has emerged online of a 15-year-old schoolgirl being stripped and brutally beaten by a gang of girls in Lingao, Hainan province.
Local police say they are investigating the incident along with the cyber police crime department, the People's Daily Online reports.
The viral video, thought to be filmed by a onlooker, has prompted a debate online about teen violence in China and whether or not the passersby should have intervened.

The video shows the gang of girls, all of whom are unidentified, beating the one teenager by violently kicking and slapping her.
They then start to strip her of her clothes.
The girl tries to run away along the rural road but the gang chased her and caught up with her. Then they kicked and slapped the lone victim again.
As they beat her, a group of young girls in their school uniform appeared to stand and watch.
Local police were then made aware of the video and started investigating the case.
The cause of the violence is currently unknown.

According to Chinese media, the incident was filmed by onlookers who chose to film rather than intervene.
The video was uploaded online and quickly became viral.
On iqiyi.com, one of China's most popular video-sharing sites, the 78-second clip has been viewed nearly 4.4 million time since it appeared on January 17.
The video has prompted mass debate online about teen violence.
One user on Facebook named Yunlei Gao wrote: 'Chinese overseas students did the same thing in the USA and they ended up being put in jail from two to eight years. Why do we not do the same thing to these rude and shameless teenagers in our country?'
CCTV News reported that there has been a surge in school violence over the past few years.
A study by China Youth Research Center in 2015 showed that out of 5,864 respondents in 10 provinces, 32.5 per cent said they had been bullied.
Just last week, a video emerged on Chinese social media of a group of bullies violently attacking a young boy and throwing him into a rice field. One of the bullies was recording the entire ordeal.
In October last year a video was released online showing a schoolgirl forced to eat rubbish out of a bin by a bully.

THIS is the chilling moment a girl gang attacks a helpless teen they accuse of spreading rumours about a classmate sleeping with her stepdad.
The vile footage, which is being used as evidence in a police investigation, shows the victim being forced to humiliate herself while being kicked and punched.
She is made to call herself insulting names on camera before a boot stomps on her face.
There are even reports that this was the second violent assault on the defenceless victim in just two days.
The video, filmed in Russia , shows a pack of six girls circling the victim, who can only be named Kristina K to protect her identity.
Two male teens were also present during the attack.
One of the boys appears to hold the camera for most of the sickening video.
Four of the attackers and the two boys -- all of whom are aged between 14 and 17 -- have been shamed on Russian social media site Vkontakte.
The girls were named as Alexandra A, Avgustina R, Elena K, and Elena. The boys were named as Krill K and Alexander L.
Both the filmed assault and the alleged first attack are being investigated by police in Chaikovsky, a town in the Perm region.
The initial attack is thought to have been over a boy, according to investigators.
A girl that knows the attackers described them to local media as "a bad example for other teenagers".
Another said the attack was over "dirty gossip" being spread about a classmate sleeping with her own stepfather.
"So this girl gathered her friends and they beat her", she said.

Seven members of the gang selling the Russian sex slaves to oil-rich Bahrain have been jailed after an 18-year-old student managed to evade her pimps and phone her parents who alerted police.
The sinister people smuggling ring included three women - among them a mother and daughter aged 44 and 27, say police.
Gang leader Olga Goryachikh, 43, was jailed for six years, a sentence reduced from 15 years because she unmasked half a dozen accomplices.
Not all the gang members were identified or detained but one, Lyubov Fedorkova, 25, dressed in red and with a face mask in court, was sentenced for three and a half years.
Two female members of the gang were deported from Bahrain to face trial in Russia.
The ruthless syndicate recruited women aged 18 to 30 in impoverished Russian villages and provincial cities, sending them to Muslim countries in the Persian Gulf where they were "forced to work as prostitutes".
They were convicted of conning 23 women to travel, earning £12,500 for each one forced into sexual slavery.
The women were told they were going to respectable jobs in bars and restaurants in Bahrain and other Middle East countries.
But when they arrived their passports were seized, they were kept under guard, and threatened with beatings to force them to have sex with Arab clients, it is reported.
In her diary, Goryachikh reportedly described her victims as “freight carriages”.
Police seized £61,000 in US dollar cash and guns as well as evidence that dozens of women had been trafficked for sex in recent raids in Perm region and the Udmurtia republic, it is reported.
Irina Volk, spokeswoman for the Russian Interior Ministry, said: "Members of the criminal gang recruited women in Udmurtia republic and Perm region, offering them jobs abroad with good pay.
"The gangsters sorted all the paperwork, bought tickets and sent their victims to the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.
"Having arrived there, the girls were met by their accomplices who threatened them with physical violence and forced them to work as prostitutes."
Senior investigator Sergei Petrashov said: "Some women were attracted by an offer of big money.”
A few “were told the truth about their future occupation, but in the majority of cases the women had very little idea of the job.
“The girls were clearly cheated and as good as kidnapped.”
Another police source said they were “sex slaves” with no means to escape.
In Bahrain they were made to live in brothels "in a chain of secret hotels", according to reports.
"They were fed and their basic hygiene needs were met. But there were also cases of violence," he said.
The Russian authorities were alerted after two students, aged 19 and 23, managed to return to Russia after 18 months of "rapes" when they were forced to have sex with Arab men, it is claimed.
In the Gulf, the women were reportedly under close guard and only allowed to phone home in front of their "master".
But an 18-year-old from Udmurtia region in Russia managed to call her family from Bahrain when she was not overheard.
She told the truth to her parents about her life as a "sex slave" and they immediately went to Russian police.
The other convicted gang members were named in a court statement only by their family names Arbuzov, Shilyaeva, Sibiryakov, Tatarkin, and Strelnikov .
They were jailed to periods from three to five-and-a-half years.
