The break was one of a number he took to foreign hotspots while his daughter Elisabeth and her children were left to fend for themselves locked in the cellar.
Yesterday friends of Fritzl broke their silence to tell of their holidays with him. And they said he had "another agenda" to the others when they stayed in Pattaya, a resort notorious for attracting sex tourists.

Rainer Wieczorak, 62, took a break there with Fritzl in 1998 with Mr Hoerer and his girlfriend Andrea Schmitt.
Mr Wieczorak said: "I need to go there because the warm climate is much better for my health, but Fritzl had other interests. While we would all sit around the hotel bar enjoying a few quiet drinks, he was off on his own.
"We did not speak about where he went but it was pretty obvious that he had another agenda in mind. We almost never saw him, he was usually sleeping things off during the day, having a massage on the beach and a late breakfast."
Pattaya is a well known destination for sex tourists as well as those looking for sandy beaches and a warm climate. Bars with thousands of girls on tap for mainly Western men are a regular feature.
As he was indulging in Thailand's perks, his daughter Elisabeth and three of the seven children she had after he repeatedly raped her, were buried alive under his home in Amstetten.
He is thought to have stockpiled food in a spare room in the basement so that his secret family could survive as he holidayed.
Mr Hoerer, 69, Fritzl's best friend of more than 30 years, told how Fritzl bought children's gifts and a dress for a woman who was not his wife. When challenged, he claimed he had a mistress - now presumed to be his daughter Elisabeth.
Mr Hoerer said: "Our friendship was so good that we even went on holidays to Thailand together. One was for almost a month, between January 6 and February 3, 1998, the other was about three weeks.
"He (Fritzl) travelled alone without his wife, he told me she had to look after the children."
He added: "Once we were at a market in Pattaya, and he did not know I was behind him when he bought an evening dress and underwear for a thin woman. It would not have fitted his wife.
"He was really annoyed when he turned round and saw that I had been watching him. He then admitted he had a woman on the side and asked me to keep it secret."
Mr Hoerer said he visited Fritzl's home in Amstetten at least three times, the last in 2005.
He met Elisabeth before she was locked up, and Lisa, Monika and Alexander, the children allowed to live upstairs with Fritzl and his wife Rosemarie.
"The children were well-mannered and well-behaved," he said. "I knew that the cellar was totally out of bounds but never gave it a second thought. When I think about what was lying there, I feel ill.
"You would never have guessed from looking at the house, everything was perfect.
"There was white marble on the floors and it was well laid out, he was always rebuilding things. He did most of the building work as far as I know, he was really a genius with construction.
"I remember that Elisabeth as a child was very withdrawn and shy. I got the impression he did not like her very much, he did not treat her as well as other children. Scroll down for more... {26}
"He used to beat her a lot more than them. She used to get a slap for every small thing. When I heard that she had vanished he told me she had joined a sect."
He said Fritzl was "a good laugh" when they were out but "the master and a bit of a dictator" at home.
"He could get really furious and would become another person. His wife always listened to him but always did what he said. "Whenever we started to talk about Elisabeth I noticed she (Rosemarie) would leave the table but I never saw her cry. I thought she was a bit of a cold woman." His girlfriend Andrea Schmitt added: "He was great company and seemed to be a picture book head of the family. "I suppose it was a bit strange that the only garden we were ever allowed to use was the one on his roof. I do not remember ever being allowed in his garden. But we got on really well. "In Thailand Fritzl often went out on his own. I believe we went to some of the clubs and saw some of the nightlife but we were not with him so I do not know exactly what he did. "We travelled down there together - but he very much did his own thing. "He enjoyed the time so much so that he said when he got back he was going to go on holiday again to Italy. That meant he would have been on holiday about six weeks in total. "In Thailand I never noticed anything very unusual about him, although one thing stuck in my mind - he seemed to be spending a lot of time buying things for the children. "He had several carrier bags filled with things and I remember thinking what a lot of presents for just three children."
Fritzl has already confessed to locking up his daughter and fathering her seven children, one of whom died after three days. According to police, he claims he incarcerated Elisabeth in order to save her from drugs although there is no evidence the then 18-year-old was involved with them. In fact, Fritzl had to drug her himself in order to get her to the basement prison. He told detectives: "I locked up Elisabeth. But only in order to protect her against drugs. She was a difficult child." When questioned about the sexual abuse, which began when she was only 11, he admitted he fathered her children and delivered them in the grim surroundings. But he was nonchalant about his behaviour, saying: "Yes I did have sex with her, but I haven't for many months now." He explained that the three children he took "upstairs" to live a normal life were chosen because they were "cry babies" and he was afraid the noise they made could expose his double life. Detectives have revealed he went to elaborate lengths to maintain his subterfuge. He forced Elisabeth to write to her own mother, saying she had joined a cult and did not want to be found, when he first locked her up. She was made to write again each time he took one of her children upstairs to say she was leaving them with her parents because she could not cope. And then, only last week, she was forced to write another message to say she had finally decided to return home. He posted it from a location hundreds of miles away.
"You can be sure that this man left nothing undone in order to deceive the family, his wife, the relatives, the children and everybody around him," added Mr Polzer.
"He had no scruples to use every possible means to deceive the public and cover up his crime. He was a very cunning man."
A police source said: "He is showing no sign of regret whatsoever. "He is so arrogant that I don't actually think that he thinks he has done anything wrong."
Fritzl, who police believe acted alone without an accomplice, was remanded for 14 days earlier this week. Doctors said he was not showing suicidal tendencies but he is under 24-hour supervision.
Eminent Austrian psychiatrist Reinhard Haller said: "Fritzl appears to have been driven by pronounced narcissism and a need to exercise power over others - and that may help explain how he got away with the abuse for so long.
"This man must have been insane and must have felt he was far superior to others."
