Just one look at the logo and key artwork for BDSM: Big Drunk Satanic Massacre, and it’s clear that this isn’t a game to be taken seriously. Everything from its logo and key artwork to the way it insults you upon death is designed to elicit a chuckle. But if you’re easily offended by colourful language, innuendos, or over-the-top violence, then this might not be the game for you. Otherwise, BDSM is a functional (if uninspired) twin-stick shooter that’s engaging enough to see through to the end.
BDSM stars Lou, the gun-toting, booze guzzling son of the devil himself, and it’s up to him to save Hell after it’s possessed by, well, people. What follows is a fairly straightforward action romp taking place over 4 chapters set in their own unique areas of Hell. You’ll mostly be fighting off waves of enemies with a typical roster of weapons including a revolver, shotgun, machine gun and more. There are some additional objectives such as rescuing NPCs trapped in cages, and all the chapters end with a really challenging boss encounter.
To mix up the standard twin-stick gameplay a bit, each weapon has a secondary function mapped to R. So for example, you can empty the revolver’s cylinder in one go, which is great for mowing down smaller enemies, and the machine gun has a handy grenade launcher that blows huge chunks of health off the bigger, more formidable foes. On top of this, collecting red orbs from downed enemies fills up your rage meter. Once this is full, you can unleash a powerful beam of fire that disintegrates normal enemies and temporarily makes you invincible. It’s a good way of gaining the edge if you find yourself getting overwhelmed.
BDSM is a perfectly fine example of the twin-stick shooter genre, but it falls down a bit thanks to its rudimentary graphics and overall lack of polish and fluidity. It’s much more fun on higher difficulties with an increased number of enemies, but the boss battles can feel a bit unbalanced and you’ll often find yourself dying without really knowing what actually killed you (and be prepared for some lengthy load times before you’re back in the action). Still, it’s worth a go if you’re in need of a decent run-and-gun title after the intensely disappointing Contra: Rogue Corps.
Is this truly what gaming has become......wonder why titles of games no longer surprise me....
(My wife is Polish, so I always read polish as Polish now... with hilarious results! Ahem.)
@Spoony_Tech well, it was bad a long time ago too. I remember carmageddon.
This one might be worse though, I admit
Will send tons of points to Gryffindor for your service.
more Polish? and what about Slovak or Czech?
You had me at the acronym for the title
Might've tried this out if it wasn't $30...
Is anyone else concerned with the paltry offering that is the length of this review? Is this what NL has stooped too? It's lazy, (possibly) cost-cutting articles like this that make me want to stop coming here. Hell, I've already stopped looking for the weekly downloads and instead just visit the eShop since I can get a better idea of what has released there.
@Kilroy This has been explained numerous times already, but these mini reviews give coverage to smaller titles that otherwise wouldn't get any. We can't cover everything, but we do what we can.
Glad to see that twin-stick shooters are trending... any chance we can get a Smash T.V. remaster?
Tried this once, never again. Bad visuals and unsatisfying ending. Despite being a seasoned stick-twiddler, I found it rather hard to get excited about the ins-and-outs of BDSM and at times it was almost painful to keep going. Oh... it’s the game’s title you say?
@Kilroy Yeah this site isn't nearly as good or useful as it used to be. I remember back in the Wii era they reviewed pretty much every title, virtual console included. Now they just tend to cover the same kind of games all the time, maybe reviewing a AAA or big release when it comes along and that's about it. There's more clickbait articles and the community has become kinda cliquey thanks to the like and dislike system.
Kind of agree. Did we really need another Super Mario World review, when most of the other SNES online service games get ignored?
@Olliemar28 Read @JayJ 's comment above mine, that person has the exact same opinion of the site that I do. You say you do what you can and that may very well be the case, but what has changed since then, besides Thomas Whitehead leaving? The "soul" and personality of the site started going downhill immediately when TW left, so in my eyes, one of two scenarios occurred: 1) revenue dropped because people missed TW or 2) the new head honcho had a completely different business philosophy, one that did not put visitors of the site and its community first.
You're right about the mini-reviews and why you post them, I'd forgotten you guys did that, but to be fair, I haven't seen them in a while. Maybe I'm not clicking on the right reviews, I don't know. Maybe you should label these as mini-reviews.
@Benji80 The site is still good compared to others, sure, but it's also a shell of what it used to be and that was my point earlier.
@nin10dobot Look up Galaxy Champions TV, it's suppose to be an homage to Smash TV. Recently released.
That's what's up. And that is fair. At least they get a mention. Some might think that they're above covering some of these smaller titles or maybe won't even GAF about them. So at least this gets them some attention & honourable mentions that otherwise may have skipped them. So while I hear the complaint(s) from someone who maybe wants a meatier & more in depth look at some of these games I can certainly see the otherside of that as well.
@Kilroy
Yeah I saw Galaxy Champions TV, it looks good but somehow it just makes me want Smash TV all the more... guess I'm just sentiMENTAL that way 😜
@JayJ I don't know how this site used to be but it surely is useful as it doesn't give out fake news like all others.
@Kilroy was about to say that. This should be called a first impressions or something. Where's the info about: graphics, performance, sound quality, replayability, etc...
@JayJ
If this was a Nintendo fansite about all the games you can play on Nintendo and tried to review all new released games for Nintendo that would be ideal. There are all types of gamers and games on the system but it's mostly big budget that gets a full review. Whys that?? Originally I used this site to get reviews on wii games. They had a comprehensive list of all games on the wii or any other Nintendo console and reviews for most of them. It was awesome help for my purchases. I dont even know how to get to it anymore. Is there a a list of all Switch games? If there even is, there could'nt possibly be as many games reviewed as before.
@Manzoli
Im gonna want that info too. I buy mostly indies so I want to be informed in order to make sound purchases . Seems even a throwaway review should include it. Just too many reviews to write, and only enough time for a quicky review on the indies apparently. Too many words. And writers know that having to write words really sucks.
Surely people can see that there are a hell of a lot more games releasing than there ever used to be? I'm not a games reviewer, but it's clear that it takes a lot of time to play a game with a critical eye, draft and probably rewrite a review and publish it. If the site was going to give a full review to every game they'd need about 4 times as many writers and we'd all be paying a subscription, as i bet loads of those smaller game reviews wouldn't get enough traffic to pay for themselves via ads.
I play a ton of games and can give a good review on any of them. Wouldnt take too long. If I were this sites writer I could do it all by myself in no time. The reviews might not individually get as much ad traffic but going to a one stop site that has all the answers would get the site more overall.
Hold on there, you need to login to post a comment...

I have to admit, I may have underestimated what BDSM: Big Drunk Satanic Massacre (from here on called BDSM) was shooting for while I was scoping it out on Steam. I did have it on my Steam wish list for about a year, so I was fairly interested in the title. However, I must not have done enough research because I thought I was getting what was mostly a solid isometric twin-stick shooter with a sexual satirical twist to it. Which is essentially what I got, but with a bit more sex than anticipated. I’m no prude and I don’t mind a game going the full sex route as long as the gameplay is still solid. Does BDSM find that motion of the ocean or does it shrivel up under the pressure?
In BDSM you play as Lou, son of the Devil himself. The game takes place in Hell, which has been taken over by a corporation named “Big Wac”; lead by Big Wac himself, the clown. His goal is to get everyone fat and complacent, but what makes this act inexcusable in Hell is that he is grinding up Demons to make the food. BDSM takes you through various levels that range from a Red Light District to a skeletal slum to save the hottest Demoness that was taken by Big Wac. Fueled by booze and horniness, and no I don’t mean the horns on his head, Lou must fight through four different chapters to save his dream mistress.
The edited version introduces even more pop culture referrences, if you feel you didn’t get enough from the full version.
I’ll just be upfront here and say that if you’re playing the edited version of BDSM on PC or console, then you’re getting the worst version. If you’re uncomfortable with sex, then you probably shouldn’t bother playing this at all. Because even the edited version still has plenty of lewd and crude things. Regardless if it’s edited, it’s still not “Safe for Work”, so you may as well get the game the developers intended. In the case of this review, however, I will show images from the edited version, but my score and review will reflect its full version.
From the very first cutscene, BDSM sets its tone with how much its going to lean on pop culture icons and jokes, and this is even more prevalent in the edited version. BDSM is filled to the brim with pop culture jokes and references to the point where it gets a bit tiring. The shock factor and constant references is cute and cheeky at first, but after the hundredth joke within the first thirty minutes, it gets a bit old. It also doesn’t help that some of these feel a bit forced, as if the studio team had a competition to see who could cram the most in. And I wish that sentence was referring to sexual acts.
I guess I need to bang my gun to get an upgrade?
Unfortunately, the sexual activities are very limited in the edited version and don’t even get that ridiculous in the full version. The edited version is essentially a couple of boob and other sexual references like a three breasted statue, and an upgrade minigame that has you basically bang your weapon to upgrade it. In the full version you need to bang the succubus that then will upgrade your weapon, but I guess stroking your gun until it levels up works also. But even in the full version you don’t even really bang the succubus. The minigame comes up with a topless card of her and you need to alternate pressing “W” and “E” following “Faster” and “Slower” prompts until you get the meter to the top. There are some moaning sound effects, which makes it even more awkward in the edited version where the succubus is replaced with your gun.
Besides disappointing minigames, BDSM does offer somewhat competent top-down isometric twin stick shooting gameplay. This is the main portion of the game, and like the sex, never reaches its climax. It feels mostly all together, but lacks a satisfying punch. There are some light RPG mechanics where you can buy perks and upgrades, as well as banging succubus for main attribute upgrades. There are also a decent amount of weapons that each have alternate firing options and all of them can be upgraded. You essentially just get flooded from one kill room to the next, which usually has you kill all enemies or headbutt the three breasted statues to continue.
From the UI to the particle effects to the blurred edges that are always present; it’s sometimes hard to tell what’s going on.
I think what lets me down the most, also has somewhat to do with the visual design also. The bosses and enemies aren’t very interesting outside of a small handful that get a chuckle. Boss fights are usually a cluster of visual effects from stage traps and enemy fire that you can easily get lost in or not know what’s hitting you due to all the particle effects. That isn’t exactly a negative, as they are nice looking as are the gore chunks, but the general enemy design is lacking. The levels, however, are nicely detailed besides some lower res items, but I feel they could have been a bit more unique.
There isn’t all that much to the audio besides some very brief lines of dialogue, rock tunes, and combat sounds effects. The soundtrack of rock music does fit nicely with the hectic combat and Hell theme, I just wish there was a larger variety. The various sound effects are also decent, but nothing really stands out. Some weapons sound better than others, and luckily the gore splatter effects do have a nice chunky sound to them. Besides some brief cutscene dialogue and the sex moans, there isn’t really anything to mention about voice acting.
BDSM is a serviceable game that tries to blend in the sexual game genre with actual gameplay, and for the most part it does achieve that. However, it never fully reaches the full quality of either genre and instead offers somewhat of a blue ball experience for players who want more nudity or want a good twin stick shooter. Even for my grade school level of humor, the jokes here feel overwhelming and forced in making it cringey, like a naughty uncle who is trying to relate to a younger YouTube generation.
Levels have a decent amount of details to them, but some objects and environments are a bit low resolution. Character models are not great either, but the gore effects are nice at least.
The main portion of BDSM is played as a twin-stick shooter isometric game with some light RPG elements for leveling up. Unfortunately, the gameplay rarely feels satisfying.
There is a decent rock and metal soundtrack that goes nicely with the Hell theme, but various other sound effects fall short.
BDSM never fully reaches a height with either its gameplay or sexual content. Jokes are rapid fire here and heavily lean on pop culture icons, unfortunately, they don’t land well outside of a small handful.
