I was in my BIOS and saw 2 settings that I wondered about: SB Spread Spectrum and BCLK Spread Spectrum. What do they do? Also, what are the pros and cons to on and off? Thanks!
Hey guys, So i found out that my motherboard (an EVGA Z370 FTW) has spread spectrum enabled by default in its bios and that there are no option to disable it. This translates to BCLK fluctuating between 99.68 and 99.81 Mhz when looking at the monitoring values in CPUZ or HWinfo when the BLCK is set to 100 Mhz in the bios.

It usually varies by less than +/- 0.0001 MHz. It is not Spread Spectrum causing issues. It is just poor monitoring software that is incorrectly reporting the speed of your CPU. If your CPU is setup correctly, you can run it at a steady speed. In the BIOS I entered 100.00 MHz for the BCLK speed. This 10850K runs consistently at that BCLK speed.
It is my personal theory that spread spectrum works like this: the BCLK is set at 99.8MHz, a timer counts up and down pretty fast, and the final BCLK is the addition of the BCLK and the value of that timer.
Page 15 highlights BCLK Spread Spectrum Allows you to enable the BCLK Spread Spectrum to reduce peak value of EMI emission, or disable it for a more accurate Base Clock.

You probably noticed that BCLK never stays at 100 but mostly fluctuates few 0.x bellow. That's spread spectrum at work adjusting BCLK to match memory, PCIe etc, everything that depends on it. Adjusting BCLK and SS can make it run at set frequency so if at or above 100 it may help performance but under 100 can hurt it.

Correct. Spread spectrum does not set it at 100MHz it simply stops/starts the fluctuations. What would actually be considered a 'tolerance' is how the BCLK is derived from the crystal, which is why you don't see 100MHz on the nose. BUt the actual MOVEMENT of the BCLK/FSB is because of spread spectrum on by default to minimize EMI.

I might guess your using spread spectrum. Intel default is usually 0.5% down spread so with 100MHz BCLK that would have the clock changing from 99.5MHz to 100MHz and back again linearly.

The BCLK you are seeing is because of Spread Spectrum. It varies the BCLK between 99.8 and 100 to reduce electromagnetic emissions than can be very bad in laboratory conditions for example.

All of this is to say, if you have 100 MHz in the BIOS and you get slightly off, you can try disabling BCLK spread spectrum (or turn BCLK lock on, vendors name it differently) or bump up some of the PLL voltages a touch.

You can minimize this by disabling spread spectrum in bios. Spread spectrum lets the bclk "float" a little bit to minimize RF interference or some such lame stuff like that. Spread Spectrum Clock is enabled by Intel by default for 12th/13th boards with internal CPU clock gen, hence OP's issue. MSI added "100mhz BCLK lock on" to give people options whether to use intel default SSC or offset SSC by 0.25.
