Battambang and Kampot: Authentic Cambodia

Everyone comes to see breathtaking Angkor Wat and the chilling Killing Fields. Sometimes if tourist have time, they then head to the islands. This is exactly what I did with my lovely Germans. However, we added two stops along the way through our predictable Cambodian adventure. The first was the small city of Battambang. Battambang is a small town in the north western part of Cambodia. It is not as tourist driven as most other destinations, which was a nice change of pace. The best way to tell how touristy a place is is based on how many hostels the city or area holds. This was such a treat! It is not very often that a backpacker finds themselves in a private room, with a private bathroom, and AC. The girls and I made sure to utilize this by eating dinner in bed and watching a movie on my laptop. There is a slight French influence noticeable in the buildings and layout of the city, which is also the perfect size for exploring on bikes. So, that is exactly what we did. We rented some bikes and enjoyed the day seeing the most authentic version of Cambodia. Whenever we passed locals — old and young — we were greeted with friendly waves, smiles, and hellos. We did make sure to do the one touristy thing that Battambang has. We rode our bikes over to the bamboo railroad. This is essentially just a straight railroad track that these bamboo platforms shuttle people back and forth on. They go unnervingly fast as you whip through the fields and pass cows grazing. Once we reached the destination just a little area of huts with locals selling you stuff we were covered in beds and smiles. At the train stop we meet a middle-aged local woman who was doing her best to sell us shirts, bracelets, Coke, coconuts, and everything in between. We had to use the bathroom and the woman kindly offered to let us use the bathroom in her house. There we saw the cutest kittens in the world as well as the honest living conditions of the locals. We ate there a few times and each time we left laughing and smiling because of this boy. We learned his favorite candy was lollipops and on our last night in Battambang we took throughout the town to look for a shop that sold lollipops a task that turned out to be more difficult than expected. He let us know that he was tired every day because after school he had to work, sometimes until 12pm. Battambang was a great town that I would recommend other backpackers visit between their stops in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. Kampot is another quaint stop in Cambodia. Located in the southeast on the Praek Tuek Chhu river, the French influence here is very present, especially in the food. We had some amazing meals here! There were lots of little bakeries and cute restaurants that seemed to perfectly blend Cambodian food with Western options. Again, we found ourselves staying in hotels and guesthouses instead of hostels. This was a blessing for more than a few reasons… the main being that I was getting sick. Being sick in the privacy of your own hotel room makes the process a little better. Other than wondering around the town for food, I ended up sitting out on a lot of the activities that Leonie and Veronika were doing. Within 48 hours I was back on my feet and feeling so much better! Fun fact: Kampot is known for its pepper! Thankfully, I was feeling well enough to go on a tour of one of the pepper plantations a few miles outside of the center of Kampot. It was beautiful! We went to La Plantation and got a nice private tour of the plantation. We got to see the process of raising pepper plants and got to try the pepper along the way. They produce red, white, and black pepper. Fresh green which later becomes black pepper and red pepper. Workers harvesting the last of the pepper before rainy season really kicks in. A great explanation of all the different types of peppers and their benefits. However, I would still recommend it to anyone that finds themselves heading to southern Cambodia.
