Program: Legends. I grew up in a difficult area in my town and I have friends that are not here anymore because they took the wrong turn — drugs and crime. Fortunately I got an opportunity. The power of music in the life of children is unique, especially for disadvantaged children when you're excluded from society. When you're given an instrument, this is something sublime. Gustavo Dudamel's unwavering belief in the power of music to unite, inspire and heal has made him one of the most loved conductors on the planet. With his evangelistic work on behalf of El Sistema, the program which 'made' him that promotes social development through music education, there are now similar programs in over countries giving children free access to intensive, quality music education. So what is it about Dudamel that inspires headlines like 'South America's lightning conductor' and 'Riding a wave of Dudamania? In person he's approachable and charismatic, exuding an infectious love of life and people. On the podium he's a natural. He dances, his eyes flashing and his arms and whole body seeming to embrace the orchestra with huge surges of energy. Viktor Gupta, long-time violinist with the LA Phil, also emphasizes that Dudamel brings a sense of community to the orchestra. There is a commitment to always get better. But it's the way he does that. He demands that you soar, but makes it feel as if you're part of the family. It's very deeply grounded in him; the musical connection comes from within. Dudamel himself recalls his childhood experience El Sistema, where 'you don't grow up individually, you grow up as a team and that is great because you're creative together with others. It's really an example for society that we can be better together. Dudamel, who's 43, also has name recognition with mainstream audiences way beyond the traditional classical concert hall. In he was awarded the 2,th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. As the first Venezuelan to receive this great honour, this star also belongs to the people of Venezuela. In the desire that it will provide a small measure of hope and inspiration during such terrible times. As a kid I was just crazy about movies and in love with all that music. A trip to Williams' house to work on the Star War s score was like going to a temple. Gustavo Dudamel was born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, in Both his parents were musical, his mother teaching voice and his father playing trombone. It was my dream to play in a band, to have people dancing as I played. But my arms were too short. My friends had violins, so I thought, 'well, why not? Gustavo was ten when he entered El Sistema and took up the violin, and soon after began studying composition. I asked my grandmother for a gift that was a baton. That for me was the most fun part of the day. I had an LP and I was rehearsing, seriously, 'this is not together, this is loud, let's go fast. Venezuela's world-famous music education program is as much a social as a musical movement. It was through this method that the professor gifted us this philosophy of life. Dudamel is the program's most visible success story. When he was 12, he stepped onto the empty podium in music class when the conductor was ill and in , aged 14, was appointed Assistant Conductor to El Sistema's Amadeus Chamber Orchestra. It was obvious he was destined to be the great conductor of El Sistema. The late maestro Abreu is still an ongoing inspiration for Dudamel. El Sistema gave me a sense of community, family and the tools to create beauty together. It taught me respect and universal human values — not just to be a good musician, but to strive to become a good citizen of the world. He took a masterclass with Charles Dutoit early on and worked as Simon Rattle's assistant in in Berlin and Salzburg where he's a regular these days , but it was his success in the Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition in Bamberg in that launched his professional career. Immediately afterwards, he was a hot commodity in huge demand. In he was offered his first major post as principal conductor of Sweden's Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. When they played Sibelius together it seemed the deep nordic tradition of the orchestra and Dudamel's Latin passion were a natural fit. It was an ideal fit in terms of giving Dudamel respite from constant media attention too. A place to learn and experiment outside the international limelight. In , Dudamel guest-conducted the LA Philharmonic for the first time and in , aged just 28, he was named the orchestra's new music director, the youngest in its' history, from the season. His arrival was celebrated with billboards city-wide bearing his trademark mop of curly hair and smiling face, with festivities culminating in a massive star-studded inaugural concert at the Hollywood Bowl, and a fireworks show that spelt out his name. Dudamel's appointment has been a defining one for the LA Philharmonic. Previously the celebrity-saturated city had an image as a cultural backwater, but during his tenure especially the period alongside CEO dynamo Deborah Borda , it's become one of the richest symphony orchestras in America, in an era when many are financially challenged. Dudamel's bold programming and expansive vision led the New York Times to herald the LA Phil as 'the most important orchestra in America — period. In February , the LA Phil announced that Dudamel is to conclude his music directorship of the orchestra at the close of the — season. He takes up the post of Music and Artistic Director of the New York Philharmonic from the beginning of the — season. In , as part of his music education strategy, Dudamel founded YOLA, which currently supports over 1, aspiring musicians in five locations. Under his guidance, the orchestra provides access to musical instruments, training and academic support to at-risk children from low-income communities and takes them into the global concert arena. These days, when he works in schools, Dudamel says 'I see myself as a child, sitting in my chair at home in Barquisimeto, playing with my instruments, with very few possibilities in life, but still trying to turn my dreams into reality. It's exactly the same environment where I grew up. In today's world, which is so competitive and individualized, we need music to be part of children's creative development, especially that collective development that comes with creating as a group. It's not all been a dream ride for Dudamel. Previously unwilling to get involved in Venezuelan politics, he finally spoke out recently after criticism directed at both El Sistema a government-funded initiative and himself for not speaking out, and for his 'cosy' relationship with the unpopular leadership of President Nicolas Maduro. Dudamel has reminded critics that El Sistema was created under a very different administration and was funded by nine different administrations of different political alignments since its founding. People believe in different things, but they are united here. In he spoke out publicly in response to the government's alleged violence towards Venezuelan protesters. The final straw for Dudamel was the death of a young El Sistema violinist in a demonstration. But still many are sceptical about Dudamel's position, including fellow-Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero who has called the conductor a collaborator and his program 'a corrupted instrument of power,' a reference to his apparent prioritizing of music before his country. Some critics have sown seeds of doubt about Dudamel's future in the wake of his meteoric rise. And it has all my life. When I'm sad I go to the podium and it's like I'm instantly happy. It's a wave of energy, of beauty. Music saves my life every day. Not only at the beginning of my life, but every day since. Conductor Gustavo Dudamel. Los Angeles Philharmonic: Danny Clinch.
