Barefoot Worship
  The church is not meant to be our holy hangout that gives us warm fuzzies when we get what we want and is the source of our spiritual feeding. It is a place where we come to give of ourselves to both God and our worship community. It is a place where we are to be equipped to be sent out. And it is to be a resource so we know how to feed ourselves spiritually on a daily basis.
  When you choose not to show up because the lead pastor isn't preaching, who does that hurt? The person filling in? No, it hurts you. And when you refuse to freely worship because your favorite people aren't the ones leading, who does it hurt? The worship team or the worship leader? No, again it hurts you. More so, how does it affect your worship community? What if there was something you had to give that day but you weren't there? What if someone else was able to experience God's presence because you chose to worship with abandon no matter who was leading? Our selfish choices don't just affect us but also affect our worship community.
  I know this first hand. Over the years of leading worship it has been easier and easier for me to just rely on myself and just do it myself because I didn't have to worry about it not being done my way or even not being done at all. But along the way, my need to do it myself and not live in community has pushed people out and didn't give them a place to use their gifts and abilities. For this I apologize. I am sorry if I have wronged you, made you feel less than worthy, or pushed you away. To my worship community, I apologize if I have denied you of a blessing that you could have received from someone else being more involved. I am making a concerted effort to change this behavior and to be the leader that God is calling me to be. To raise up leaders around me to go out and do the same.
  So what area is God challenging you in? To be supportive of your staff members by being there when it is their week to share God's word and help equip us to go out and to be the church? To worship freely not matter the songs chosen or who it is leading them? To move beyond your little holy huddle? To feed yourself by being in God's word daily? Maybe it is completely something else. Can we at least agree on this one thing? That we won't allow our selfish choices to deprive our worship community of the blessings that God wants to pour out on us and through us?
  May we stop going to church and start being the church.
