Regularly published, primarily in Shuktara, a then dominant Bangla magazine from the house of Deb Sahitya Kutir Publishers, Narayan Debnath, the only comics artist decorated with a D.Litt., has ruled the Bangla comics and illustration scene since 1962.

He created the Bengali comic strips Handa Bhonda (1962), Bantul the Great (1965) and Nonte Phonte (1969). He holds the record of longest running comics by an individual artiste for Handa Bhonda comics series which completed its continuous 53 years of running.
Comics in Bengal Comics in Bengal is a one-of-a-kind, captivating exhibition presented by Kolkata Centre for Creativity in collaboration with Comics Culture Collective from 9 February to 9 March at the KCC Amphitheatre. The exhibition would shed light on the evolution of Bengali comics from its inception in the 1920s to the present day.
