I was 16 years old when I bought this album and it fit perfectly with a 16 year old rock and roll fan. The cover, which is one of the best in classic rock history is made for a 16 year old sense of humor. The fusion guitar style of the criminally underrated Tommy Bolin, the great rhythm section of Dale Peters and Jim Fox and fair to midland singing of Roy Kenner; make for a classic rock masterpiece. I seen this band in 1974 at Rich Stadium with Lynyrd Skynyrd and ELP and while they were no ELP they put on a great show, especially Tommy Bolin. "Standing In The Rain": A nice beginning to the album, the words are kind of lame but it has a great hook. 4stars "The Devil is Singing Our Song": A great rock and roll song with some excellent guitar. 4 stars "Must Be Love": A rock and roll classic and one of Tommy's best known songs. 4 stars "Alexis": Great acoustic guitar and vocals by Bolin. 5 stars "Ride The Wind": Starts side two and again some of the words are lame but the line: "Ride the Wind before it's gone," is a great hook. 4 stars "Got No Time For Trouble": Nice ballad and well played and sung. 4 stars "Rather Be Alone With You": Written and performed by Roy Kenner and well done. 4 stars "From Another Time": MY favorite Tommy Bolin song, with nice fusion percussion and bass lines mixed with some killer guitar work. This one is a 5 star number in any book and years ahead of its time. "Mystery": A nice mellow number and a great end to a classic album. 5 stars. Summary: This is a classic rock album that is done in a unique style. In 1973, I would have given it 5 stars but in 2012 it still stands as a 4 star classic. The mix of styles is interesting and for the price this one is well worth it. If you like classic rock and top notch musicians playing it: You need to get this one.
First bought this album in the 70's when it came out. Great classic rock album. Bought numerous CD's. Now back to vinyl. Great soundstage. Great pressing. If you are a Tommy Bolin fan this is a must. If you a classic rock fan who loves fantastic guitar this is a must. Great song writing also. Now waiting on the repress of James Gang "Miami" hint, hint....
Great music good shop arrived on time and packed graet
After seeing Joe Walsh in concert recently I started thinking about which James Gang and Joe Walsh albums I had in my collection. Thinking back to when I attended graduate school I remember anticipating the Bang album as a second iteration of the original Gang. I was impressed then and even more impressed now. This is no "one hit wonder" album. All of the music is enjoyable. In the vein of "The Ashes, The Rain and I", "Mystery" carries on the Gang tradition of combining rock and classical. "Alexis" is fresh enough to have been done currently by Metallica. Bang is currently my morning commute album, a great way to start the day. Note: Since writing this review I attended a James Gang reunion concert with the original band. We paid for VIP tickets and I won the raffle to play with the band during sound check. Fortunately my instrument was the cowbell and the song was Funk 49. Although initially terrified, I stood front and center next to Joe and had a life experience that I will never forget.
Bang, was the first James Gang album to feature Tommy Bolin. He brought not only his virtuoso ability on guitar, but his talens as a songwriter, and singer. This album boasted Billboards #3 Song of the Year, "Must Be Love". The album is flawless from the opening Echoplex on "Standin' In The Rain" to the closing fade of the EXCELLENT "Mystery". It has Tommy doing his first recorded Lead Vocal on "Alexis", a tune co written with the great Jeff Cook. Tommys guitar work is superb, thru out this LP. It still sounds fresh after 40yrs. I love every tune on this album. It also brought Tommy Bolin to a nationwide audience. I recommend this album to everyone. It is a gem. It is no fluke it sold as well as it did. Try it you will love it. I do!
I've had this album 5 times twice on vinyl, once on a cassette and twice on CD. All five grew legs and walked away! I think I've out smarted them this time though, as soon as Amazon shipped it and I got it I downloaded it on my computer. Ha, Ha. This one is another one you must have, it's with Tommy Bolin before he went out on his own and Joe Walsh joined the band. If you get it I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!!! "Wild Bill" Latvala.
This is the most amazing, and one of the best recordings i have ever heard. I've been listening to this album/cd, since i was in high school, and have never stopped. I'm 54 years old now. I actually heard, "Must Be Love", on the jukebox, in my high school cafeteria, for the very first time, and knew then, i wanted to research, who sang that! I had no idea, Joe Walsh, was ever, even associated with the group, at that time. I love it!!!!
well..for those rock n rollers used to the ..same old..popular name bands..do yourself a favor my brother introduced me to this on vinyl..in the mid 1970ss...standing in the rain..must be love..are all you need from this..theyl blow you away..crank it in car..and soak it in..itl get your blood going..great vocals bass wicked guitar licks..5th track fantastic too.mnixed in is lil this that..soo worth the cash..this is the stuff..you didn't know about..now you do..

Featuring Mr T. Bolin
A five star rock album we have here. Tommy Bolin takes up the strat and stands dead centre. Filling the shoes of Joe Walsh you`d think would be a hard act to follow but, Tommy just glimmers in his own aura. Bringing amazing musicianship, songs,ideas, and Bolin admirers with him the guy breathes new life into an old band, 1st two tracks are knock out killers but the 4th Alexis is a special song Tommy pulls out of his hat, a number that could almost be his Stairway to heaven signiture. You will even find this Alexis on his solo Teaser album. starts slow and quiet building into a guitar driven frenzy at the end. A great James gang CD.
