This film offers an look inside South Africa at a very pivotal point in its history and for its peoples. Apartheid took a terrible toll on the psyche and well being of both South African blacks and whites, but its death spasms were horrific, resulting in the most bloody and violent outbreaks in modern S.A. history...chiefly ignored by the white population and the world, or would have been if not for some almost suicidally brave S.A. journalists. Violence broke out in the townships, black on black battles fueled by the complicity of the apartheid government in order to stall the talks with Nelson Mandela and his ANC party. More South Africans died in these four years of violence than in all the preceding years of white apartheid government. That's the bones of this story. We follow along as four men who come to be labeled "the bang, bang club," because of their fearless documentation of what was going on, following the "bang bang," insert themselves at great personal risk into the battles and the day to day horror. This is their story. The historic events, the under currents of political struggle, are the environment that cooks this stew, but the story remains centered around these four men. I've read a lot of criticism of this film for not telling a more complete story of the events. I've also read criticism that the story should have focused more on what it means to be a photo journalist. Sometimes I've read the two criticisms in the same review. But the focus on this film remains sharp. It doesn't preach a message nor drive us to a conclusion. It just gives us a seat at the side of the men who made up the bang, bang club and allows us to follow alongside their experience. It's an experience like no other. And it does it well, through excellent production elements. The sights, sounds, and the artistic choices for scenery (particularly the sweeping street fighting scenes) do vary in quality, yes, but only from good to stunning. The South African crew and actors can be very proud of this film. It's not pretty, nor soothing, but it has a gritty reality that sometimes has me checking my mouth for the dust and dirt that seems to always be in the air of the townships. There was so much to admire about this film. The acting was riveting. There's been some tiresome talk, as they almost always is when American/Canadian actors take foreign roles, about accents. But I find it almost always an artificial argument. In this case, the accents varied from very good (Phillippe) to spotty (Ackerman & Kitsch) but, I always ask: did that affect one's ability to get lost in the story? Not for me. I found Taylor Kitsch as Kevin Carter excellent in portraying Kevin's greatly flawed but equally greatly talented persona as the most famous member of the quartet. Kitsch captures the charm and warmth of Carter as well as his self destructiveness in a gripping emotional balancing act. Frank Rautenbach as Ken Oosterbroek and Neels Van Jaarsveld as Joao Silva provide stellar performances as the two lead native South African actors. Malin Ackerman is the weakest link although she brings her best stuff in her crucial emotional scene in the township. Ryan Phillippe's Greg Marinovich is the focus of this film. Phillippe's performance provides the foundational balance of the story. We follow Greg's arc from a neophyte (albeit talented) photographer to his assimilation into the "club," through the numbing exposure to man's inhumanity to man, standing by as witness, until he is as machine-like in his drive as the others. I ask, how anyone could survive any other way? As to why they did it, like any one who succeeds at their art and/or craft, it takes a drive and ambition and a devotion that will takes its toll, this one like few others. A last word on the the supporting S.A. actors in this film. Really, really good. Some of the best performances I've ever seen. There is obviously a lot of talent residing in the area. Praise for the young boy who talks to Greg toward the beginning of the film, the warriors battling on the streets, the women with their stoical faces, but especially the man who narrates the story of the slaughter of his family. HE WAS SUPERB! I only wish I could include his name here. I enjoyed this film very much. It doesn't flinch away from showing the violence that surrounded the photographers, that they ran toward when others ran away. It can therefore be hard to watch at times. But it is definitely worth seeing. Yes, the book is MUCH more inclusive. It tells ALL the story. That's what books do. It is not an easy read, but my dearest wish is that this film drive people to the book. This is the film, that is the book. They are both very good.

This film kept my attention throughout because it was accurate and authentic to the history of South Africa in the 1990's. The photo journalist's portrayed in the story were very compelling and realistically portrayed. You saw the impact that their dangerous careers had on their perception of life in general. None were perfect and their competitiveness and their personal drive to be the best led them to very intense scenes of despair that became life altering. Each handled the danger differently and the drama they witnessed caused deep trauma and scares. Likewise I was impressed by acting was well because the characters were believable and nuanced. Furthermore, the historical portrayal of the period was consistent with other media I've read. Additionally, I have some insight from talking with people, who lived in S. Africa during this time and this film seemed a much more accurate portrayal of the civil war than many movies made about this era. Nelson Mandela was not the Martin Luther King Jr. of S. Africa, instead he was much more like Farrakhan. Though Mandela was not featured, references were made about him by those terrorized and murdered by his followers because they did not agree with his practices or tactics. So, I award 5 stars for historical accuracy.

As a photographer, soldier, and dad, this was hard to watch. Still, It's important for the world to know the inhumanity and tragedies that take place around the globe. Personally, though, I'm TIRED of elitist actors playing the roles of brave people in chaotic situations that they would NEVER place themselves in. And the interjected romance was ABSOLUTELY UNNECESSARY. seemingly the movie was non-bias but failed to portray Mandela as the murderous terrorist he was. Responsible for the bombing of buses full of children.

Understanding that the movie was about photojournalists heading into it, and based on true events (and the book written by two of the main characters in the story), I was intrigued. I am a freelance journalist and photographer and though I would never embed or insert myself into a war zone, this movie does an excellent job of capturing the dichotomy that is telling the truth through images. To offer the public a view, without bias, often requires the presenter (in this case the photojournalists) to present information that is harsh, upsetting, not politically-correct, unfiltered. In the case of embedded photojournalists in war-torn areas, as this film depicts (the civil war in South Africa in the 1990s), there are real moral dilemmas as to how involved they become with what is happening around them. Imagine seeing a starving child and presenting the picture to the world only to be questioned why you did not "save" the child, or being shot at by either side of a conflict for simply trying to share the story (often of all sides of a conflict). I found this film to be an accurate portrayal of how those who are willing to "tell the story" are often thrust into the most haunting and often deadly situations for the benefit of a world public that wants "the shots", want to see what is happening - even make judgments of their own. In a time period where fake news has become the norm, this movie was a refreshing (if hard to watch at times due to the extreme violence and conflict) reminder that there are people who are willing to tell the story, even if it isn't the one any of us want to hear.

Best scene was the one where Kevin Carter chooses to take the famous vulture picture and not help; His pain clearly shows. The conflict between documenting an event and influencing it is clearly illustrated in that scene. Bad scene: where one of the photographers girlfriends can't help him document a tragic event. She's supposed to be a editor.

Loved this film, based on a true story. Excellent in all areas, including the acting, the Directing, the script....and the cast. There is a history lesson in this tale, and the events shown herein are amazing. Just shy of 5 stars.

The amount of violence a conflict journalists is exposed is life altering and everlasting. Nurses, Policemen, paramedics and EMTs, as well as ER staff see violence at the same level often in their daily jobs in the states albeit spread out more over years. The cost to ones sanity is similar in all those occupations than combat soldiers, medics, nurses, doctors. Thank you to all the conflict journalists who show us the underbelly of our world, so that we might be better equipped to fight the injustices.

Many people do not understand what some photojournalists go through and the risks they take to get the shots they do, all to keep the world informed. Kevin Carter took an emotional beating for not personally taking direct action to help the starving child in the vulture photos. The situation as I understood it was that the journalists flew in on a charter plane bringing supplies to a food distribution center that was closely monitored by armed Sudanese guards. The journalists were told not to touch any of the refugees due to the possiblity of contracting disease and that it would mandate 30 days medical isolation and a revoking of their journalists licenses if they did. Too bad they didn't explain that in the movie but instead made him look like a cold-hearted monster instead. I think seeing such distressing scenes as he did, maybe one more horrid situation was more than he could handle along with other problems in his life.
