BURT KWOUK is a Chinese British actor who grew up in occupied Shanghai and is
known worldwide for playing Kato in Pink Pantlier movies. He was also in tliree
James Bond movies, three Fu Manchu movies, acted on three different versions of
IHE AVENGERS, was in Hammer films and is still going strong. Paul Duane from
Ireland interviewed Kwouk in the actor s London pub.

VEVCENT SCmAVELU is a Sicilian American actor whose face is well known after
over 30 years of roles. He’s in most of Milos Forman’s movies including ONE FLEW
OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST and AMAEDEUS and was in GHOST, LORD OF ILLU-
SIONS, and TOMORROW NEVER DIES to name a few. Anthony Petkovich (author
of The X Factory) has interviewed Baice Glover, Rol^ert Clarke, Antonio Fargas,
Andrew Robinson, Gregory Dark, and Robert Quarry for PV.

ROY LONEY was the original lead singer of Tlie Flamin’ Groovies from San
Francisco. Loney’s voice is one of the greatest in tlie history of rock and roll and his
excellent band was fun, funny and rockin’ when so many others were ponderous,
over serious or ju.st plain bad. Interviewer Jolin Battles, who lives in Chicago, played
in a band backing Brian McMahon and writes for RocktolTer.

Jane Scott (mentioned in this space last issue - Underground Cult) retired this
Spring after 50 years at The Cleveland Plain Dealer. She wrote the weekly What’s
Happening column from 1964 when The Beatles came to town until she was 82! She
had attended Lakewood High School (as did my mother and my brothers and I). My
friends and I used to make fun of her teen appeal writing style but always read what
she had to say.

John Agar and Lawrence Tierney both starred in major studio movies before
making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Both .served time. One day in July 1952,
Agar and Tierney were lx)th sentenced in the same California courtroom! >3^iile Agar
straightened his life out and kept playing leads for years, although in lower budget-
ed movies, Tierney remained a drinker and brawler. It’s amazing that he lived as long
as he did. I grew up watching Agar sci fi movies on TV but didn’t realize how great
Tierney had been in fibn noir and gangster roles until years later. Agar’s “comeback”
role was playing the mayor of New York at the World Trade Center in KING KONG.
Tierney was cast in RESERVOIR DOGS after Tarantino read Mike Murphy’s interview
with him in PV#8. Agar was one of the nicest guys in Hollywcxxl. Tierney could be
dangerous and unpredictable but people 1 know had a great time hanging out with
him. While being interviewed he took the letters from the word Psychotronic and
made a long list of other words. I still have his list.

Here’s my response to a recent PV web site message:

Psychotronic, you hypocrites! Issue #35, review of African poster book Extreme
(Zanvas: “It’s hard not to wonder how watching so many brainle.ss war and com-
mando movies affected the viewers.” Why not also blame 50s comic books and rap
videos for their troubles?! Tlio, mayte anti- American movies like JFK and WINTER
KILLS influenced the African 911 terrori.sLs. Rabid Barbra Streisand and Warren Beatty
hate President Bush so much, tliey’ve gone into hiding since 911. Maybe tlie 911 ter-
rorists thought tliey had friends in Hollywood!!!!! - Ed Narorozny

First of all I wrote that book review before 9-11 and America was not attacked
by people from Ghana. This is a big issue so lets leave comic books and videos out
for now. 1 wonder about how movies in general have affected and continue to affect
people everywhere. Despite the relentle.ss self promoting hype from Hollywood
alx)ut how wonderful and entertaining and enricliing the movie business is - film
can and does manipulate both diildren and adults on many levels, and can alter our

perception of ourselves, the past, the present - and the future. The world is a vastly
different place than it would have btk^n without film. Since motion pictures were
invented, most were intended as harmless entertainment but others had serious polit-
ical and social agendas and were used as psychological weapons. American movies
of the past helped change fashions, habits and attitudes. They also rewrote history
and spread fascist, racist, sexist, pro (and anti) religious, socialist, and yes, even com-
munist ideas. Hollywood is and always has been a bottom line business. Profit comes
before politics, religion, morals or quality (obviously).

The state controlled Soviet film industry used film to rewrite their liistory and
control the minds of the population of Russia and conquered territories, llie Nazis
did tlie same thing even more effectively in fewer years. Nazi and Soviet propagan-
da films are studied today (and influence our TV commercials and political cam-
paigns). Both Nazi and Communist filmmakers studied and borrowed ideas from
Hollywood. The American government never officially controlled all film production,
but during WWI, WWII, and the Korean War era Hollywood studios effectively
helped to make Americaas more patriotic and to hate and want to destroy the
enemy. In most cases the studios had to be pressured to do this, but they listened
when the government called.

By the 60s, the old American studio monopoly system had been broken up by
the very government that used to count on it during wars, then the old ceasorsliip
system was gone. Presidents (or J. Edgar Hoover) could no longer pressure studios
to do their patriotic duty and by the late 60s many major American movies were firm-
ly anti-war and anti-government (and pro drug). You could argue that Hollywood
aided the enemy during Viet Nam - even if you think we shouldn’t have even teen
there. We now have a new wave of pro American cause movies (after recent public
pressure from tlie government) being made by the same corporations tliat thrive on
merchandising and on product placements and profit more from movies that are
increasingly moronic, hateful and anti everything.

It doesn’t matter what your political or religious beliefs are to realize that movies
(and in a much larger sense - media) affect our lives and even world events, espe-
cially now witli satellite dishes and PCs. Yes, that poster book made me think about
how American movies fucked with the minds of people in Ghana, but it’s not all one
sided. In die past we were affected by movies and attitudes from England, Germany,
France, Italy and even South Africa. Americaas and their children are now being
affected daily by media from or backed by Israel, Japan, and even Australia! When
it comes to awareness of commercial and political agendas in media 1 feel like I’m
maybe on a 6th grade level. Most Americaas are happy to stay in nursery school.
The masters degree people who control our lives (and many of our politicians) will
do anything to keep filings this way.

By file way if you’ve got money to bum and need still more and tetter looking
apoc'alyptic holocaust end of the world entertainment- the first four high definition
D-VHS releases ($35 - $45 each) are TERMINATOR 2 (see L A. nuked again!), THE
PEACEMAKER (stolen nukes!), X-MEN (concentration camp survivor villain) and U-
571 (Nazi submarine). Tlie D-VHS VCR lists for around $2000. Pick one up ASAl^ at
Wal-Mart along with a new flat big as your wall TV. I’he Wal-Mart heirs need more
money to pay lawyers and P.R. people to keep them out of jail and out of the head-
lines after all fiiose DWI charges. Well meet again ...

I was feeling sick. I was losing my mind. I heard ateut fiiese treatments from a
good friend of mine. He was always happy. Smile on his face. He said he had a great
time at the place. Gimme gimme shock treatment. Gimme gimme shock treatment.
Peace and love is here to stay and now 1 can wake up and face the day. Happy
happy happy all the time. Shock treatment. I’m doing fine. (The Ramones - ’77)

MING LADEN

Thanks for including a review of my Robert Milchum book in PV #36.
It’s an honor to be mentioned. And a particular honor to be in an issue
with Ming the Merciless on the cover (when I was a kid at this time of
year, 1 was glued to Easter-break repeats of FLASH GORDON and KING
OF THE ROCKET MEN on the BBC every morning. Every year 1 wait for
them to come back on, and every year they don’t). Thanks for the Clu
Gulager interview, too; never known too much about the guy, but Fve
been trying to Ogure out his performance in THE
KILLERS for years. Cheers. - Damien

Christ! Ming is on the cover! God 1 can remember
sitting at the Victoria Theater on Sat. Matinee watch-
ing FLASH GORDON and wondering why that Ming
dude was so BAD!!!! FYI: We paid 9 cents to get in,
saw 10 cartoons, 2 or 3 shorts (Rocket Man, Flash,

Hoppy) and a feature to boot - great times! Good to
see a Psycho presence at tlie Buena Park Record
Show. You guys Rock - jaMes Lowe (The Electric
Prunes)

RONN MANN

Ron Mann as a filmmaker is a legend. His docu-
mentaries on 60s culture are unforgettable.

Hitchhiking was a big thing back in those hippie
days. 1 for one hitchhiked all around the Pacific
Coast going up and down Highway #1.1 had many
adventures in my high school days in the 60s. 1 can’t
tell you about how many nude beaches I would stop
at during my hitchhiking days. In fact I had a girlfriend at the Sanchez
Adobe Ranch near Big Sur off Highway #1 and 1 would hitchhike to her
dad’s ranch to go horseback riding and of course to visit her. Boy, do
1 miss those days. I can still hear “Sweet Hitchhiker’’ by Creedence
Clearwater Revival in my head. I’m not going to even mention how 1
snuck in to see the Monterey Pop Festival, that’s another long story! The
60s were a fim era and documentaries were needed for icons like Ed
‘Big Daddy’ Roth and Robert Crumb. 1 am glad that Robert Crumb now
has a movie video. 1 saw the movie and it was excellent! While my wife
Pat sits there reading her Feb., 2002 issue of Allure, I sit here with a
real magazine (Psychotronic Video #36)! She just doesn’t
know.. ...sigh. - Paul Dale Roberts (fazma Universe Online!)

JEREMY SLATE

1 notice you mention that you have no further information about DRAG
RACER, a film mentioned by Jeremy Slate. This film was directed by
John ‘Bud’ Cardos circa june/July 1972. It was written by sound edi-
tors Robert Glenn and Jeff Bushelman and produced by Glenn for his
own company. Slate’s co-stars include Mark Slade (HIGH CHAPAR-
RAL), Deborah Walley, John Davis Chandler and Preston Pierce. DRAG
RACER was definitely released but another Cardos film made the fol-

lowing year, the similarly obscure BILIY BLACK, may not have been
released/finished. Made for Frank R. Saletri (BLACKENSTEIN), BIUY
BLACK has the envious double bill of Liz Renay and Chuck Norris.
Incidentally this information was gleaned from ‘The Hollywood
Reporter’. - Julian Grainger (London)

Got issue 36 in the mail last week, and just wanted to say you’ve done
a great job as usual. Especially enjoyed the interviews with Donald G.
Jackson and Jeremy Slate. By the way, you can read more about Slate’s
experiences at Sandstone in Gay Talese’s book “Thy
Neighbor’s Wife,” which has some interesting
moments if you can wade through Talese’s preten-
tious writing style. - Mark Deming (Ann Arbor,
MI)

Loved the Jeremy Slate interview! I always like it
when PV interviews stars of old biker films. Also, 1
can’t wait to see Ron Mann’s film about Ed “Big
Daddy” Roth. Keep talking about Cleveland culture
in the pages of PV. I love it Can’t get enough. - Leigh
Buck (Bethlehem, PA). Slate, by the way, was
bom in Margate, Nf and raised in Bennington, VT.

DONALD JACKSON

Looks like DEMON LOVER DIARY is playing the LA.
FILM FESTIVAL - guess 1 better go there and protest
This is an AFl sponsored “behind the scenes" mak-
ing of my first movie. It has played the festival circuits
for over 20 years. ABC showed DEMON LOVER
Ming the Merciless DIARY on 10-17-01 on television in Australia. Now

boodeg tapes are starting to surface DEMON LOVER DIARY DVD is out
shortly. They have no releases from the cast and include footage of Ted
Nugent - who might help me sue them. If you ever saw AMERICAN
MOVIE - this is the real thing! Too bad I was never able to recover the
35mm negative and prints from THE DEMON LOVER. 1 do have 2000
