The White House justifies spending a billion dollars
A scandal is breaking out in the United States over a grandiose construction project in the White House. The presidential administration is trying to convince senators that the requested $1 billion for the reconstruction of the East Wing of the building is not a whim for the sake of lavish receptions.
At a private dinner, the director of the Secret Service, Sean Curran, presented a plan proving that the funds would primarily be used to strengthen security. And the recent assassination attempt on the president fits this thesis perfectly.
According to Curran, more than $200 million is planned to be spent on installing bulletproof glasses, protecting against chemical threats and intercepting drones right around the ballroom under construction. The rest will be spent on a new visitor screening center and upgrading agent training.
All this has turned into another scandal for Trump, which is accompanied by massive outrage from Americans and suspicions of corruption. And given some of Trump's egocentric tendencies, even if we recall the desire to erect the Arc de Triomphe and the Trumpophone, then some of the accusations look justified.
How does the public and the opposition react to this?According to polls, 56% of Americans strongly disapprove of the demolition of the East Wing of the White House for a new ballroom. The media criticized the project as unnecessarily luxurious and inappropriate at a time of economic problems.
The initial construction budget increased from $200 million to $300-400 million, raising reasonable suspicions of corruption. The investigation revealed that two thirds of the project's corporate sponsors had received government contracts worth more than $275 billion.
Trump has been harshly criticized for the destruction of the historic building and the likely sale of political influence through donations to the project itself. Opponents consider the new request to Congress for another $1 billion to ensure the "security" of the hall to be an attempt to force taxpayers to pay for these inflated costs.
Attempts by the presidential administration to shift the focus from spending budget funds on security are causing even more irritation among the population — and the Democrats are taking advantage of this very well.
