Bad Gastein buying blow

An icy breeze was blowing steam sideways across the mountain vista; a curtain of vapour, tinged pink by the red floor lights of the pool. At dusk, the peaks of the Hohe Tauern mountains were playing hide-and-seek behind the real clouds, and a half moon winked briefly before disappearing again. This water, which is said to have valuable healing properties, lapped up to my neck, as strong underwater jets massaged my tired back muscles. Although vaguely sceptical of the science behind this form of thermal therapy, at this juncture, I was ready to give anything a try. From the Hohe Scharte peak, we dropped 1, vertical metres in one long ear-popping run to the foot of a funicular railway. Still there was no let up: From the Stubnerkogel, we carved down empty, groomed pistes that snaked through snow-clad forests. As I spooned in lentils and bacon, my face aglow and my broken nose swollen , I noticed that the cabin was saucily decorated with strings of old-fashioned underwear strung on a line across the bar. The Gastein valley was one of his favourite haunts. Kaiser Wilhelm came here too and ambitious courtiers, never keen to miss out on an influence-peddling royal reception, followed and built opulent villas — one of which was my home for the week. The Villa Solitude has one of the best views in town. A fierce cascade runs through the bottom of the ravine, and the porous sheer rock faces that rise up from the water are dotted with frozen waterfalls. Every morning, before breakfast, I walked around town and stopped to goggle at this remarkable scene from every conceivable angle. The villa itself, built in by Baron Mensil, is painted yellow with a green roof and shutters, and inside the rooms and ceilings are panelled with year-old pine. There is a large drawing room warmed by a giant porcelain oven. I kept expecting to see Sherlock Holmes smoking a pipe in the corner on one of the comfy armchairs that huddle around a mahogany table. Instead I met Keks, a tabby cat who everyone described as 'the boss'. He nuzzled up to my legs when I arrived and jumped on to my lap as soon as I sat in the drawing room. He strutted over my laptop as if to berate me for the crime of working while on holiday, and then languidly curled up to sleep on the green sofa. All in all, he was a magnificent host. It was the sort of romantic atmosphere that almost forces you to fall in love — even if it is just with a grey and black cat. Yet Bad Gastein is a place of faded glamour — like a Havana in the snow. The empire is long gone and fierce competition from up-market mountain resorts has meant Bad Gastein has lost the fur-coat brigade to villages like Lech, St. Moritz and Cortina. More guests disappeared when the German National Health Insurance stopped subsidising 'spa cures' back in the s, and many sanatoriums went bust. Then disaster struck when a Viennese business bought four of the historic buildings in the town centre from the indebted community, promising to restore them, but then left them unused. These empty, decaying ghost buildings now haunt the heart of the community. They include the once grand Hotel Straubinger and the Badeschloss, where Kaiser Wilhelm used to bathe. But the valley is looking to the future. Instead of ageing aristocrats, young, party-hungry Swedes are beginning to dominate the scene. The free 'Art on Snow' festival at the beginning of the month will showcase the work of international graffiti artists, ice sculptors and conceptual artists. Lying back in my thermal pool, I decided that the Gastein valley was well on the way to successfully re-inventing itself. Thanks for the buildings Franz-Josef, but good riddance to your formality. Start a travel blog Login. Today was all about river rafting! We who had ridden together during the week had signed up for the river rafting event. We gathered at 9. They lent us wetsuits, shoes, helmet and paddles. Three boats in total, two with German speaking guides and one with English speaking guide. I chose Chris, the English-speaking guide and it was nice to hear and talk English for a change. After thorough basic instructions and about safety guide lines it was time to go out on the river Salzach. It took about two hours to paddle the kilometers and it was a fun experience. In my opinion I would have liked a little more action on the river, so next time I decide to river raft I will sign up for a higher graded river. After the adventure we went back to the rafting center and enjoyed lunch and opportunity to buy photos from our rafting. Later we gathered in the taxi and headed back to Bad Gastein. Up there is a suspension bridge with amazing views. Unfortunately, it was windy up here so you had to hold on to your sun hat or it would blow away. A little further down I spotted a pack of horses gazing. I rushed down and managed to get many nice photos of gazing horses with alpine peaks in the background. In order to catch the last lift downhill Stubnerkogel I now had to hurry up to the Top Station again. Once back down in Bad Gastein again I changed into more appropriate clothing and went for the last dinner at Jagdstube. It turned into a festive atmosphere and the group of riders gathered later that evening and was offered Champagne from the travel agency. Really nice! Previous Next Table of contents.
