In honor of Black History Month, we want to highlight the community of Allensworth and share some Tulare County history you may not know about.
The town of Allensworth was founded in 1908 by Colonel Allen Allensworth, an Army Chaplain who came out west to the free state of California after the Civil War.
Along with several others, Allensworth's vision was to establish a community where African Americans would have the opportunity to thrive without oppression. The community o…f Allensworth was the first and only town in California that was fully funded, designed, governed, and populated by African Americans.
In 1908, they purchased acres of fertile land in Tulare County as the Tulare Lake Basin provided water for agriculture and the land was cheap. At it's peak in 1914, more than 200 inhabitants resided in the town of Allensworth.
Unfortunately, Lt. Allensworth was killed in 1914 when he was struck by a motorcycle while getting off a streetcar in Monrovia. The Santa Fe Railroad moved a stop from Allensworth to Alpaugh which impacted the town's economy greatly. The communities' water supply soon began to dry up just when the Great Depression hit the United States in the early 1930's. With that, businesses shut down and residents moved into larger cities to look for work.
Although the town of Allensworth did not grow in to the Colonel's ultimate vision, it is still an important part of #blackhistory and we encourage residents to explore and learn more about the legacy of Colonel Allen Allensworth.

The COVID-19 virus continues to spread in Tulare County, and Public Health of…ficials urge residents to stay home for Super Bowl Sunday and not gather with others outside of your immediate household. To protect yourselves and loved ones, it is imperative that you gather with only those who live within your immediate household if you are watching the Super Bowl this Sunday.
Although COVID-19 hospitalizations and case rates are on a downward trend, COVID-19 continues to pose a significant risk to the health of our communities and to our most vulnerable populations. Hospitalizations have decreased in the county; however, there are still over 130 individuals currently hospitalized for COVID-19. Tulare County Public Health continues to distribute the COVID-19 vaccine as quickly as possible, based on available supply, and encourages residents to adhere to the public health guidelines by not gathering in order to make necessary impacts in combating and slowing the spread of COVID-19.

Officials strongly encourage everyone to get tested for COVID-19; testing is free and available to anyone. Tulare County has three community testing sites, located in Dinuba, Porterville, and Tulare. Appointments for testing can be made by phone at 1-888-634-1123 and online at https://lhi.care/covidtesting. Public health officials encourage those going to get tested for COVID-19 to wear a face mask or facial covering for protection.
To reduce the spread of COVID-19 in Tulare County, everyone must practice both social and physical distancing of six feet or more between persons and not participate in social gatherings of any kind. Residents must always wear a face mask or covering while outside the home in public settings and in environments where physical distancing is not possible. In addition, everyone is encouraged to frequently wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer, regularly disinfect high-touch surfaces, and stay home if you are sick or instructed to isolate/quarantine by a medical or public health professional.
Rudolfo Reyes Cut the bull no one believes in that BS anymore if someone feels they are susceptible then let them distance themselves from everyone else let the people who know they aren’t at risk keep on living their lives.

Today marks the first day of Black History Month, a time to honor the important role that African Americans play in the story of America.
Black History Month started out as a weeklong celebration, organized by Dr. Carter G. Woodson (pictured below). February was chosen as it encompassed the birthdays of both Frederick Douglass and President Abraham Lincoln.
Black History Month is a great opportunity to learn more about the contributions and achievements of black Americans a…s well as celebrate black culture.

In 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson—known as the “Father of Black History"—started the first Negro History Week with the organization he helped found to research and… share African American life and history.
Woodson was the second Black American to receive a PhD in history from Harvard, following W.E.B. Du Bois by a few years. He wanted to ensure students would be exposed to Black history through Negro History Week, and chose the second week of February to celebrate the birthdays of President Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.
As its popularity grew and the Civil Rights Movement gained momentum, more people began advocating for an extension of the annual week, and #BlackHistoryMonth started in 1976.
This Scurlock Studio Records portrait of Woodson is in our National Museum of American History's Archives Center.

Tulare County Updates COVID Vaccine Plan, Now Starting to Vaccinate Phase 1B, Tier 1 - Officials Urge Residents to be Patient as Vaccine Supply Remains VERY Lim…ited
Tulare County Public Health has updated its COVID Vaccine Plan and is now offering vaccinations to those eligible in Tier 1 of Phase 1B. The county continues to vaccinate those eligible in all tiers of Phase 1A and residents age 65 and older. Eligibility in Tier 1 of Phase 1B includes frontline workers in the following sectors: Education and Childcare; Emergency Services; Food and Agriculture Workers.
This advancement into vaccinating Tier 1 of Phase 1B significantly increases the number of residents now eligible to receive the COVID vaccine in Tulare County; however, vaccine supply remains VERY LIMITED. County officials are asking residents to remain patient, as currently there is not enough vaccine supply to meet the demand of all who are now eligible. Although vaccine supply is limited, Tulare County Public Health, in coordination with our area health care providers, will begin allocating doses to start vaccinating those qualified in Tier 1 of Phase 1B. Officials will provide more vaccination clinics and open more appointments to get vaccinated once supply and vaccine allocations to Tulare County increase.
It is important to know that although Tulare County is beginning to vaccinate residents eligible in Tier 1 of Phase 1B, first-dose clinics for residents eligible in Phase 1B will be limited, as Tulare County Public Health is balancing vaccine inventory to meet the requirements of second doses for residents who have already received their first dose of the COVID vaccine.
Anyone who meets the eligibility requirements to receive the COVID Vaccine can visit the Tulare County COVID Vaccine webpage at: https://covid19.tularecounty.ca.gov/covid-19-vaccine/ for more information. Those receiving vaccines will be required to show proof of eligibility with either of the following: photo ID, employer ID badge, employer payment stub, or official letter from employer.
Already received your first dose of the COVID vaccine and need to make your second-dose appointment? Please DO NOT call 2-1-1 or 1-800-283-9323. Tulare County Public Health will contact you directly by phone or email to schedule your second-dose appointment. If you do not have a scheduled appointment within a week of the date for your second dose, call (559) 685-2260 to alert Tulare County Public health that you need to schedule your second-dose appointment.
The second dose of vaccine must be the same vaccine manufacturer as your first dose and administered by the same vaccine provider you got your first does from. For Pfizer, the second dose is to be given 21 days following the first dose. For Moderna, the second dose is to be given 28 days following the first dose.
Need assistance with your residential property taxes? The State Controller’s Property Tax Postponement Program may be able to help. To learn more, visit www.ptp.sco.ca.gov or call (800) 952-5661.
The deadline to apply for this program is February 10, 2021.
